11 Engrossing Books That Will Be Hard To Put Down

Buzz Feed24-05-2025
There's always a place for a book you can't stop reading, and for me, that place is wherever I am on holiday. So, here are 11 books that you may not be able to put down.
Replay – Ken Grimwood
This fantasy/sci-fi novel follows the life of Jeff Winston, and then it follows the life of Jeff Winston again, and again. Saddened and unenthused by his life, Jeff suddenly drops dead, only to wake up as his 18-year-old self with all of his memories in tact. In repeating parts of his life, he explores different relationships, decisions, and various paths, making him, and the reader question where a meaningful life truly comes from.
City of Thieves – David Benioff
This historical fiction is set four months into the siege of Leningrad, during a brutal, biting winter. With food scarce, a teenager named Lev is caught looting the body of a dead German paratrooper, and is arrested and put in a cell with Kolya, a charismatic young deserter. Instead of facing execution, the two are instead given an almost impossible task: finding a dozen eggs for a Soviet colonel's daughter's wedding, or die. Their journey takes them through the perilous conditions of soviet Russia, and bring the two closer as they fight for their survival.
And Then There Were None – Agatha Christie
This gripping psychological thriller and murder mystery follows ten individuals, all with a wicked past, who are lured to a private island under false pretences. When, one by one, the group begin to be murdered, we wonder who is the orchestrator of this scheme, and how they have choreographed it.
Americanah – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This novel follows Ifemelu and Obinze who are young and in love when they each leave military-ruled Nigeria for different shores. Ifemelu goes to America, where defeats and successes come in equal parts, and where race becomes a potent issue, something she'd never had to consider before. Obinze arrives in London, undocumented and in danger, and his life there is fraught with it's own hardship. We follow their different stories, and what happens when they reunite 15 years later.
Hurricane Season – Fernanda Melchor
This novel starts with the murder of a local 'witch' in a desolate Mexican village. Questions as to who committed such an act, and why, begin to be asked, and a society shrouded in poverty, violence and misogyny is revealed. With a lyricism that is unique and hard to put down, Hurricane Season certainly keeps your eyes fixed on the page.
Dark Matter – Blake Crouch
This alternate reality sci-fi novel follows Jason Dessen, a physics professor who has been abducted. His life as he knew it is gone, and finding his way back there is more confusing, mind-bending, and horrifying than he ever could have imagined.
Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir
Ryland Grace has woken up – he's on a last-chance mission and the fate of humanity depends on his success. The only issue is, he cannot remember a thing. Awakened millions of miles away from home, and with no one around him other than the corpses of two others, Ryland's hazy memory begins to return, and the sheer magnitude of his task begins to dawn on him.
The 7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid
This is the fictional story of Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo, who, after her life in the limelight, is ready to tell all of her scandalous secrets, her rise to fame, and her sacrifices to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. Surprised that a star such as Evelyn would choose her, Monique seizes the opportunity; her conversation with Evelyn includes some shocking revelations, ones that Monique herself is somehow connected to.
Homegoing – Yaa Gyasi
This novel, spanning 300 years and two continents, follows the lives and subsequent generations of two half-sisters born in different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. We follow the sorrow-filled stories of each lineage, one staying in Ghana at the height of the slave trade, and the other sold off and shipped to America where the decedents are raised in slavery. The magnitude of this novel is a feat of it's own, but the heartfelt stories are elegantly, and viscerally told.
The Firm – John Grisham
Mitch McDeere finished law at Harvard and is bombarded with offers from law firms, but one offer stands out: Bendini, Lambert and Locke. After taking the job, it becomes clear that this is the law firm of the mafia, one that is almost impossible to get out of. Mitch must figure out how to balance this new life embedded in criminal conspiracy in order to survive.
American Dirt – Jeanine Cummins
Lydia has a fairly comfortable life in Acapulco with her son and husband, a life they're content with. But when her husband publishes an exposé of the newest prominent drug mogul, their lives change forever. Forced to flee in order to protect themselves, Lydia and her son, Luca, embark on an attempt to reach the United States, along with many others who seem to be running from something, but towards what?

Conjunto music pioneer Flaco Jimenez is dead at 86

Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Texas conjunto music pioneer Flaco Jimenez, 86, died while surrounded by his family at one of his son's homes on Thursday night, his family announced. Flaco was born in San Antonio in 1939 and began performing with Tex-Mex bands at age 15, which led to his earning multiple Grammy Awards many years later. "It is with great sadness that we share tonight the loss of our father, Flaco Jimenez," his family said on Thursday in a Facebook post. "He was surrounded by his loved ones and will be missed immensely," his family said. "Thank you to all of his fans and friends -- those who cherished his music," the family continued. "His legacy will live on through his music and all of his fans." The post was signed by Arturo and Lisa Jimenez, Javier and Raquel Fernandez, Gilbert Jimenez and Cynthia Jimenez. Flaco Jimenez suffered from a long-term illness prior to his death, the San Antonio Express-News reported without saying the nature of the illness. His last words were, "Ya estoy cansado," which is Spanish for "I'm tired," Arturo Jiminez said. Flaco and his brother, Santiago Jr., were born and raised in San Antonio and became leading performers of conjunto music, which their grandfather, Patricio Jimenez, pioneered. Conjunto music combines Mexican, German, Polish and Czech waltz and polka musical traditions to create a danceable form that features the accordion with accompaniment from guitars, bass and drums. Conjunto is particularly popular in northern Mexico and Texas, and Flaco played a three-row button Hohner accordion and sang. He recorded his first regional hit, "Hasta La Vista," in 1955 for the Tipico record label. Flaco's early conjunto recordings were made for small record labels and later were collected by folk recording label Arhoolie. Flaco in a 1973 interview described conjunto as "happy music" and said it combined polka with rock and roll and cumbia forms. "You can't just stick with polka and redova and schottisches," he told Arhoolie owner Chris Strachwitz in the interview. "You have to play what's going on in the world." Flaco recorded with fellow conjunto pioneer Doug Sahm in New York City in 1972 and contributed to Ry Cooder's 1976 album, "Chicken Skin Music," which helped spread conjunto beyond its Tex-Mex roots in San Antonio. He also performed with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Dr. John, among others. Flaco was especially influential as a solo performer and as a member of the Texas Tornados and Los Super Seven musical acts. Flaco's career led to his receipt of many awards, including six Grammy Awards from 1987 to 2015. One of his Grammys was a Lifetime Achievement award. Dog Adopted by Fishing Family Has Hilarious Reaction to Meeting First Fish

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A rescue dog recently adopted by a family of keen anglers was left totally unimpressed by his first encounter with a fish. Kevin the chocolate Labrador retriever has become a social media sensation, after his new owners shared a video of him getting to grips with a family tradition: fishing. Posted to their TikTok account, @chippingchipper, on July 29, Kevin could be seen sitting on a boat, a misty lake visible in the early-morning background, alongside their other dog, German shepherd Odin. Their owner had caught a fish, and before returning it to the water, offered it to the dogs for a sniff. And Kevin, curious, went for it right away—only to instantly pull a disgusted face, shake his head back and forth, and begin retching, as the woman behind the camera burst out laughing. The man then turned around to put the fish back in the lake, and Odin followed him to the edge of the boat, as if to make sure it was really gone, while Kevin hung back. Their owner wrote in a caption: "One was raised on the boat, the other is new to the family. Can you guess who is who?" TikTok users were in stitches, awarding the video more than 300,000 likes, with one writing: "Something about a dog gagging is so hilarious," and another joking: "The lab report wasn't positive." "One is salivating, the other almost throwing up," another pointed out, with another writing: "Kevin says NO THANK YOU." Plenty of commenters shared their love for Kevin's name, with one writing: "I love animals with human names." But his owner admitted they "can't take the credit," as "he's our rescue and we couldn't imagine changing [his name]. Fits his personality!" Since their first video went viral, Kevin's adopters have been sharing more videos of their two dogs, with Kevin slowly getting to grips with life on the water. In one, he plays on a deck, rolling back and forth on his back, before accidentally landing in the water with a splash—but appears quite happy while swimming back to shore. And in their most recent video, Kevin's owner gives him another opportunity to sniff a freshly-caught fish. But this time, he doesn't take his new dad up on the offer. Kevin the rescue dog got his first sniff of a fish, and wasn't impressed. Kevin the rescue dog got his first sniff of a fish, and wasn't impressed. TikTok @chippingchipper As a Labrador, Kevin is already more likely than other breeds to enjoy life by the water: according to a vet-reviewed report from PetMD, golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers often enjoy swimming. Poodles, English and Irish setters, and Newfoundland dogs are also included in the list of breeds who enjoy swimming, alongside dogs specially-bred for water such as the Porrtuguese water dog and American water spaniel. Newsweek has contacted @chippingchipper via TikTok for comment on this story. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share?
