Denis Villeneuve has been appointed to direct the next James Bond film, Amazon MGM studios announced on Thursday.
The Canadian filmmaker and four-time Academy Award nominee has earned both critical acclaim and box office success with the Dune franchise, as well as with Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival.
In a statement, Villeneuve described himself as a "die-hard" James Bond fan.
"Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr No with Sean Connery," he said.
"I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.
"This is a massive responsibility, but also incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour."

Villeneuve will also serve as executive producer, alongside his wife Tanya Lapointe.
It marks the latest step in a major overhaul of the iconic British spy franchise, following Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson handing over creative control to Amazon MGM Studios as part of a lucrative deal.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Broccoli family, long the force behind the Bond films, agreed to co-own the intellectual property and granted Amazon the ability to move forward without their creative approval.
In March, Spider-Man's Amy Pascal and Harry Potter's David Heyman were announced as new producers.
The pair have consistently maintained that they would secure a director and develop a screenplay before casting the next super spy.
Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said he was "honoured" to have the acclaimed director on board.

"He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself. From Blade Runner 2049 to Arrival to the Dune films, he has delivered compelling worlds, dynamic visuals, complex characters, and-most importantly-the immersive storytelling that global audiences yearn to experience in theatres," he said.
"James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers and we cannot wait to get started on 007's next adventure."

'It was quite a funny one because — and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person — she was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' 'And I was like, 'My idea for Bond. We've gotta take it back to the books, you know? Really, we absolutely have to make this guy an alcoholic, a drug addict. He hates himself. He hates women. He hates a lot of people. He's in deep pain. He's brilliant at killing people.'' And that, according to Matthew, is where his journey ended. 'I think by the end of the interview, she was like, 'Mhmm. Next.' 'I wanted to make it really dark, but what I should have said was, 'But also incredibly charming.'' After failing to score a licence to kill, Matthew went on to star in Zack Snyder's superhero adaptation Watchmen, in which he played the scheming Ozymandias. Since then, he has appeared as Henry Talbot in the period drama Downton Abbey, and as Toby Armstrong-Jones in The Crown. His film work includes the comedy drama Cemetery Junction and comedy-spy prequel The King's Man, both of which featured Bond star Ralph Fiennes, who appeared as M opposite Daniel Craig. Matthew can currently be found starring in the crime drama Dept. Q for Netflix, where he plays disgraced detective Carl Morck. As for Bond, the hunt is now on for Daniel Craig's replacement following the appointment of Denis Villeneuve to direct the next entry in the franchise. Three big names top Amazon's James Bond casting wishlist
Amazon MGM are reportedly circling three huge names to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. The long-running franchise made a monumental step towards its next instalment this week, with the appointment of Denis Villeneuve as director. Announcing that the Dune filmmaker would be helming the next film in the series, head of Amazon MGM Studios Mike Hopkins said: 'We are honoured that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter. 'He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself.' Since then, speculation has gone into overdrive as to who might play Villeneuve's Bond – with some suggesting he might tap up Dune collaborator Timothée Chalamet to take the role. According to Variety, the studio and producers have their own wishlist in mind – and it's between actors Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland and Harris Dickinson. 28-year-old Jacob hit the stratosphere as the star of the 2023 hit Saltburn, appearing opposite Barry Keoghan as the object of creepy Oliver Quick's affections. With the publication reporting that producers are looking for an actor under the age of 30, Jacob certainly hits the bill in that respect. While Jacob is an Australian, that shouldn't count against him in playing British instruction Bond – underrated 007 George Lazenby was an Aussie too. If Jacob is successful, this should more than make up for him missing out on a starring role in James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot. Marvel Cinematic Universe star Tom Holland, 29, previously threw his own name into the hat, admitting that he'd 'love' to play Bond. 'I'm just putting that out there,' he teased in 2021, adding: 'I look pretty good in a suit.' And, as the MCU's own Spider-Man, Tom is no stranger to explosive franchise filmmaking. English actor Harris, 29, has had a strong run of hits recently, starring in Triangle of Sadness, The Iron Claw and Babygirl in the last three years alone. As of April this year, Harris's odds were listed as 9/1 to score the elusive license to kill. 'The 28-year-old already has a very impressive portfolio of work and has received critical acclaim for his acting alongside Nicole Kidman,' said Betfred spokesperson Robert Ford. Earlier this year, it was announced that Harris will step into the shoes of another British icon – playing John Lennon in Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopic. With producers circling their Bond, speculation has also been rife as to who might be the next Bond girl. While some speculated that Zendaya could appear opposite Villeneuve's future Bond, her Dune: Part 2 co-star Florence Pugh has edged her out of the top spot. According to the Midsommar star is the favourite to be the next Bond girl, at odds of 8/1. 'I think everyone's always interested in playing a spy, right?' she told Digital Spy. 'That's something we grow up admiring, which is so strange, but it's just a very clever and quick world that we all want to be a part of.' As the only name formally attached to the new film, Villeneuve has responded to the announcement of his new gig, promising that the franchise is in safe hands. He has been lauded for his turn as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's two-part Dune adaptation, with the pair recently partnering up again for number three. So, it is perhaps no surprise that Villeneuve is considering casting Timothée Chalamet in his first ever James Bond film. The French-Canadian filmmaker, 57, will helm the next instalment in the British spy franchise – the first since Amazon completed its massive $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM Studios and parted ways with longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Chalamet, who has twice been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, saw his odds increase in the wake of the news. But the 29-year-old, famed for playing Willy Wonka and Bob Dylan and dating Kylie Jenner, won't be Daniel Craig 's successor, with a source insisting 'an American actor will not play Bond.' 'Timothée Chalamet could be a part of a future Bond film, but in no way shape or form will he be James Bond,' the insider told 'An American actor will not play Bond, it is not going to happen, so that leaves Timothée out of the running for the lead.' There hasn't been a new 007 film since 2021's No Time to Die, which marked Craig's swansong as the famous secret agent after five outings. Since then the fate of the franchise has been up in the air after Amazon bought MGM. The company partners with Eon Productions on Bond. A statement released in February revealed Broccoli and Wilson will 'remain co-owners of the franchise' but that Amazon MGM Studios 'will gain creative control.' Wilson, 83, said he was 'stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects' while Broccoli, 64, added: 'With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.' According to the Wall Street Journal, when asked about the deal last year, she told friends: 'These people are f***ing idiots.' Villeneuve described himself as a 'die-hard Bond fan' after news of his directing gig was announced this week. 'To me, he's sacred territory,' he said in a statement. Bond has yet to be cast, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson – who was said to have completed a screen test at Pinewood Studios with Broccoli in March 2022 – the current favorite. 'The role of Bond is Aaron's to lose,' our insider said. 'He is still on the top of the list. The film is going to be put together pretty fast but Denis understands how important it is to get the casting just right.' Pierce Brosnan previously threw his support behind the BAFTA-nominated star, whose breakout role was playing John Lennon in 2008 film Nowhere Boy – which was directed by his now-wife Sam Taylor-Johnson. Brosnan, 71, who played the intelligence agent in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day, said he believes his former co-star has the 'chops' to take on the mantel. 'I would definitely tip my hat to the fellow,' he said last year. 'I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so.' George Lazenby, 85, who enjoyed one stint as the 007 agent in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, also endorsed Taylor-Johnson, as well as former Bond villain Jonathan Pryce. The actor, 77, who starred opposite Brosnan in Tomorrow Never Dies, previously told Good Morning Britain: 'He's grown into a wonderful actor and when he was a little younger, he did this extraordinary sort of action film where he played a superhero. 'And he's great, look at him now, he's black tie, handsome and yeah, he'd be a great Bond.' Johnson, who has offered cryptic responses to interviewers desperate for clues about Bond, could face competition from Theo James, Henry Cavill, Callum Turner, James Norton and Aaron Pierre, whose names have all been in the mix.
