Do pumpkin seeds have more protein than meat in a single serving? A nutritionist explains the truth

Indian Express3 days ago
In the conversation on equivalence between plant and animal protein sources, the commonest comparison happens to be the one between pumpkin seeds and meat and poultry. That's because pumpkin seeds come closest to animal protein in terms of containing nine essential amino acids, although two of them are low. However, one cannot be a replacement for the other. What then do you need to do to achieve daily protein targets?
'The problem with existing nutrition conversations online today is that they are just half-truths and do not look at the totality. Pumpkin seeds are no doubt a good source of plant protein but they are not the standalone complete protein superfood that meat, fish and poultry are,' says Dr Seema Gulati, Head, Nutrition Research Group Center for Nutrition and Metabolic Research (C-NET).
Why 100 gm of pumpkin seeds and 100 gm of meat are not the same
A 100-gram serving of pumpkin seeds is nutrient-rich, offering a good source of calories, healthy fats, protein and fibre. They also provide various vitamins and minerals. This 100 gm serving gives between 30 gm and 32 gm of protein. The total calories are 550 calories, about 120 calories from the protein it contains and 430 calories from the fat. 'Pumpkin seeds are calorie-dense and have good fat, which is a mix of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. But they are fat nevertheless and you cannot have too much of them,' says Dr Gulati. Pumpkin seeds also have some carbohydrates.
In comparison, 100 gm of meat or cooked chicken provides 31 gm of protein. But the total calorie count comes to 250 calories, 120 calories from protein. It contains negligible carbohydrates and is low fat. There is a lot of difference in the PDCAAS, or Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score. This method considers both the amino acid composition of a protein and how well it is digested and absorbed by the body. The score for meat is 0.92 and that of pumpkin seeds is 0.7.
'But the most important difference is in the portion size you eat for adequate amounts of protein. A 100 gm serving of any animal protein would not be more than a palmful and can be had in a single sitting. But 100 gm of pumpkin seeds cannot be had at one go because that would amount to three fistfuls. So no way can you say that 100 gm of pumpkin seeds can be had in a single meal as 100 gm of animal protein,' says Dr Gulati.
What happens when you have too many pumpkin seeds at one go?
Since they are rich in fibre, according to Dr Gulati, your digestive system may not be able to adjust to a sudden overload. 'Increase your intake gradually to avoid gas and bloating,' she says.
Besides, she warns, pumpkin seeds contain phytic acid, also known as phytate, which can bind to minerals like iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium, making them less available for the body to absorb. 'That's why you need to soak or sprout pumpkin seeds and reduce phytic acid content. That's why having only pumpkin seeds in a single meal as concentrated plant protein is not recommended,' says Dr Gulati.
Besides, not all pumpkin seeds provide the same benefits. 'If you buy processed or packaged pumpkin seeds, you're likely to get an extra dose of sodium and preservatives. And a packet of pumpkin seeds costs quite a bit,' she adds.
How to include pumpkin seeds with other plant proteins and ensure a better protein intake?
Dr Gulati recommends sprinkling pumpkin seeds over salads and using them with edamame beans, soyabean and peas. 'These plant-based proteins complement pumpkin seeds, helping to create a more complete profile for muscle building and overall health,' she says.

Breakthrough In Liver Cirrhosis Treatment: Indian Scientists Develop New Approach

New Delhi: A team of Indian scientists has found a new way to treat liver cirrhosis, by targeting the lymphatic vessels in the liver and intestine that fail in case of cirrhosis. Chronic liver disease can progress from mild disease to fibrosis to cirrhosis (also known as scarring). Cirrhosis is accompanied by the distortion of both blood and lymphatic vessels in the liver and the intestine. Patients with advanced cirrhosis often develop complications like fluid accumulation in the abdomen. A team of scientists from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati, focussed on improving the drainage capacity of lymphatic vessels in the liver and intestine by using nanocarriers filled with a powerful protein called VEGF-C. Pic Credits: IANS 'Vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) is a key pro-lymphangiogenic factor that activates lymphangiogenesis or new lymphatic vessel growth. It does this through binding to a cell membrane tyrosine kinase receptor, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR-3), the activation of which is essential for the growth and development of new lymphatic vessels,' said the researchers. The team probed the therapeutic efficacy of VEGF-C in ameliorating gut lymphatic dysfunction and improving lymph drainage. Owing to the hydrophilicity, short half-life, and systemic side effects of VEGF-C, the team led by Dr Subham Banerjee from NIPER Guwahati first focused on the development of VEGF-C encapsulated reverse micelle-based nanocarriers, which specifically bind to VEGFR-3 homodimers. Next, the ILBS team, led by Dr Savneet Kaur, tested the developed VEGF-C nanocarriers extensively in animal models of advanced cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The developed molecule was delivered via the oral route to ensure its gut lymphatic vessel uptake in the animal models. The team showed that VEGF-C nanocarriers significantly increased mesenteric lymph drainage, which reduced ascites. Importantly, the treatment also led to an attenuation of the portal pressures, improved cytotoxic T-cell immunity in mesenteric lymph nodes, and reduced local and systemic bacterial load. The research, published in the JHEP Reports journal, is the first to highlight that therapeutic lymphangiogenesis with VEGF-C is a promising treatment for reconstructing the fragmented lymphatic network and restoring lymphatic function and drainage in advanced cirrhosis.

Prayagraj plans largest animal birth control, anti-rabies drive

Sangam city is set to launch its largest-ever animal birth control (ABC) and anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) drive to tackle the growing menace of stray dogs in urban areas. Newly constructed Animal Birth Control Centre in Rasulabad area of Prayagraj . (HT PHOTO) From high-end colonies to densely populated localities, the stray dog issue has become a daily concern for residents. Municipal authorities admit a steady rise in dog bite cases and road accidents involving stray animals, heightening public concern—especially children and senior citizens. According to some estimates, more than 700 dog bite cases occur daily within the city limits of Prayagraj alone. New infrastructure to support ABC-ARV efforts In a proactive move, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set up an Animal Birth Control Centre in Rasulabad. A second facility in the same area has recently been completed and is scheduled to begin sterilization and vaccination operations starting August, said officials. Constructed by the Construction and Design Services (C&DS) wing of Jal Nigam at a cost of ₹1.85 crore, the new center includes modern amenities such as an operation theatre, pet salon, kennels, community kitchen, park, pet shop, office, preparation room, dormitory, and pantry. 'The center is capable of sterilising up to 32 animals per day,' said Rohit Kumar Rana, project manager, C&DS. Targeting 75% of stray dog population As part of its broader strategy, PMC is initiating a citywide ABC-ARV campaign, aiming to cover 75% of the estimated 1.13 lakh stray dogs in the next six years. The municipal corporation has already started the tendering process through a Request for Proposal (RFP) to bring onboard a qualified agency or NGO to implement the project. 'This initiative is critical to ensure the safety and well-being of city residents,' said Dr Vijay Amritraj, veterinary and animal welfare officer, PMC. 'We plan to sterilise and vaccinate the stray dog population in a phased and systematic manner.' Annual goals and standards To meet the programme's objectives, around 18,000 surgeries will need to be performed annually within PMC limits, including providing adequate post-operative care. All procedures will follow standards prescribed by the Animal Welfare Board of India. As of now, 4,540 dogs have been sterilised and vaccinated in Prayagraj, according to municipal data. Role of implementing agency The selected agency or NGO will be required to deploy: At least two qualified veterinary doctors (each with experience in 500+ ABC-ARV surgeries), four paravets, four dog catchers and drivers for designated dog vans. While PMC will provide the dog vans, the operating agency will bear all operational, maintenance, fuel, repair, and wage costs. All dog bite cases must be reported to the nearest government hospital. The implementing agency must also maintain a mortality rate below 0.5%, with evaluations conducted after every 500 surgeries, said officials.
