Thailand says 'progress made' in Cambodia border dispute talks

The Hindu14-06-2025

Thailand said Saturday (June 14, 2025) talks with neighbour Cambodia had 'made progress' in resolving a long-running border dispute that last month devolved into clashes.
Troops from the two countries exchanged fire on May 28 in an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet, with one Cambodian soldier killed.
The Thai and Cambodian armies both said they had acted in self-defence but agreed to reposition their soldiers to avoid confrontations.
Thailand has tightened border controls with Cambodia in recent days, while Cambodia ordered troops on Friday (June 13, 2025) to stay on 'full alert'.
Officials from the two countries had agreed to resolve the spat at a Saturday (June 14, 2025) meeting in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
Foreign Ministry adviser Prasas Prasasvinitchai was leading the Thai delegation, while Lam Chea, minister of state in charge of the Secretariat of Border Affairs, headed the Cambodian contingent.
Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Saturday (June 14, 2025) that the meeting had 'made progress in building mutual understanding' between the two countries.
Thai foreign ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura said in a press conference that 'diplomatic dialogue remains the most effective way forward', adding that talks would go into Sunday (June 15, 2025).
The row dates to the drawing of the 800-km (500-mile) frontier, largely done during the French occupation of Indochina.
The region has seen sporadic violence since 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced earlier this month that Cambodia would file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over four disputed border areas, including the site of the latest clash.
Mr. Manet said in a Facebook post Friday (June 13, 2025) that the four areas and the border restrictions would not be discussed on Saturday (June 14, 2025)'s talks.
'Cambodia awaits Thailand to clarify its official position at (Saturday (June 14, 2025)'s) meeting on whether Thailand will join Cambodia in referring the four areas to the ICJ,' he said.
The ICJ ruled in 2013 that a disputed area next to Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia, but Thailand says it does not accept the ICJ's jurisdiction.

IAF lost jets over ‘political call', says def attache; quoted out of context: Govt

NEW DELHI: IAF lost some fighter jets when it conducted strikes on nine terror hubs in Pakistan and PoK on May 7 because India's political leadership had directed that no military establishments or air defences across the border were to be attacked on that day, India's defence attache to Indonesia, Captain Shiv Kumar, said at a seminar earlier this month. The remarks by Captain Kumar, who is a colonel-rank officer from the Navy, followed an acknowledgment of IAF's initial losses by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on May 31 in Singapore but he did not specify the exact number of fighters shot down. Modi govt is yet to officially quantify IAF's losses during Operation Sindoor . Pakistan has claimed to have shot down six Indian fighters, including three French-origin Rafales, on May 7 itself - an assertion that CDS Chauhan dubbed as "absolutely incorrect". Captain Kumar's comments led Congress to renew its attack on govt over its handling of Operation Sindoor. Speaking at a seminar on 'Analysis of the Pakistan-India Air Battle and Indonesia's Anticipatory Strategies from the Perspective of Air Power' on June 10, Capt Kumar said he "may not agree (with an earlier Indonesian speaker's claim) that we lost so many aircraft, but I do agree we did lose some aircraft and that happened only because of the constraint given by the political leadership to not attack their military establishments and air defences". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Преносим лазерен заваръчен пистолет, 50% отстъпка днес HL Купете сега Undo "After the loss, we changed our tactics and we went for the military installations (and radar sites). So, we first achieved suppression of enemy air defences and then that's why all our attacks could easily go through using Brahmos missiles (on May 10)," he further said, his comments being in line with CDS Chauhan's statement in May that after initial losses, Indian armed forces took remedial measures and were able to carry out precision strikes at Pakistan's airbases. After Capt Kumar's 20-day-old remarks came to light and were cited by Congress to criticise govt, Indian embassy in Indonesia said Capt Kumar's remarks "have been quoted out of context and the media reports are a mis-representation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker". "The presentation conveyed that the Indian armed forces serve under civilian political leadership, unlike some other countries in our neighbourhood. It was also explained that the objective of Operation Sindoor was to target terrorist infrastructure and the Indian response was non-escalatory," it posted on X. Earlier, the CDS had said in Singapore, "What I can say is that on May 7, in the initial stages, there were losses. Numbers are not important. What was important is why did these losses occur, and what we will do after that."

‘Where is Travis Decker?': Locals ask amid Coeur d'Alene active shooter alert; Idaho officials mum

After multiple firefighters were shot in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Sunday, several locals linked the incident to Travis Decker, a missing former soldier wanted in the deaths of his three young daughters. 'Where is Travis Decker?' some asked, while others wondered 'Is this Travis Decker?'. There is no concrete evidence to link Decker to the shooting in Coeur d'Alene. Social media users baselessly linked Travis Decker to Coeur d'Alene shooting(AP) This comes as Idaho authorities urged residents to shelter in place because of law enforcement activity following a shooting in Kootenai County near Coeur d'Alene. Gov Brad Little said multiple firefighters were attacked while responding to a blaze. 'This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,' Little said on X, platform formerly known as Twitter. 'I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more.' The sheriff's office in neighboring Soshone County said on Facebook that authorities were 'dealing with an active shooter situation where the shooter is still at large.' It was unclear how many firefighters were hurt. An alert by the Kootenai County Emergency Management Office asked people to avoid the area around Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road, about 4 miles (6.5 km) north of downtown Coeur d'Alene. 'Where is Travis Decker'?' While the scene in Coeur d'Alene was active, social media users linked Travis Decker to the shooting. 'Why would Travis Decker draw attention to himself?' one X user asked. 'Could this be Travis Decker??' another person tweeted. 'Where is Travis Decker?' a third one wrote. Travis Decker has been wanted since June 2, when an officer found his truck and the bodies of his daughters outside Leavenworth. The 32-year-old has been missing since. 'There is no certain evidence that Decker remains alive or in this area. Seemingly strong early leads gave way to less convincing proofs over the last two weeks of searching. Still, we can't and won't quit this search; Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia Decker deserve justice. And Decker remains a danger to the public as long as he's at large,' the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post.
