DIGITAL travel platform Agoda has recently unveiled its latest 'Europe to Asia Summer Travel Trends', and Malaysia is once again firmly on the map.
Ranked as the fourth most searched Asian destination by European travelers for the second consecutive year, Malaysia has seen a significant 20 per cent surge in interest compared to 2024, the highest increase among all top destinations.
According to Agoda, the most searched locations in Malaysia are Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and the Perhentian Islands, highlighting a growing appetite for both city adventures and island escapades.
Agoda's insights, derived from accommodation searches for the peak European summer months of July and August, show Malaysia's tourism magnetism on the rise, particularly among travelers from France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. While these five markets continue to lead in search volumes, there's notable momentum coming from France and the Czech Republic, each recording a remarkable 95 per cent year-on-year growth, with Poland close behind at 74 per cent.
Meanwhile, Spain overtook the UK in the search rankings this year, reflecting shifting travel interests among Europeans. Malaysia's 20 per cent growth in travel searches leads the pack, but other Asian destinations are catching up.
China, benefitting from visa waivers introduced for several European countries, saw a 14 per cent increase, while Sri Lanka experienced a 13 per cent rise.
Still, Malaysia's overall performance remains unmatched in growth among the top five destinations such as Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and Vietnam, the latter making its debut on the list. 'Malaysia's rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and warm hospitality continue to captivate holidaymakers seeking authentic and diverse experiences.
'With a 20 per cent rise in searches this year, it's clear that more Europeans are eager to explore all that Malaysia has to offer during their summer holidays,'said Agoda country director for Malaysia and Brunei, Fabian Teja.

British Airways owner IAG beats Q2 profit estimates

LONDON: British Airways owner IAG reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings on Friday, helped by strong demand for its transatlantic routes despite fears of knock-on effects from US President Donald Trump's tariff war. Europe's airlines have broadly managed to dodge turmoil over tariffs, with Air France-KLM and Lufthansa reporting strong second quarters and confirming their annual forecasts this week. IAG reported operating profit of €1.68 billion (US$1.92 billion) for the quarter, compared with analysts' average forecast of €1.40 billion in an LSEG poll and up 35 per cent from a €1.20 billion profit in the same period last year. "We continue to benefit from the trend of a structural shift in consumer spending towards travel. We remain focused on our market-leading brands and core geographies, where we continue to see robust performance," Chief Executive Luis Gallego said in a statement. The group confirmed its full-year financial forecasts and said it was seeing strong demand in its core North Atlantic markets, as well as Latin America and Europe. IAG's shares were up 2.1 per cent at 0709 GMT. While Gallego acknowledged volatility in the US economic situation, he said any weakness was mitigated by strengths in other parts of the business. "The US point-of-sale economy cabin is still weak but it's offset by the strong premium cabin we have ... but it has been improving in the past few weeks," Gallego told reporters on a media call. US airlines have not fared as well, with Delta pulling its full-year guidance this spring over worries about declining demand. Growth in the Latin American market has also continued to boost the business, Gallego added. IAG shares have been among the strongest performers among European airlines in recent years, but this year it has slightly lagged rivals Lufthansa and Air France-KLM as they have recovered from cost pressures.

Paris' Montmartre battles overtourism post-Olympics

PARIS (Reuters) -Residents of Montmartre in Paris are sounding the alarm over overtourism, fearing their picturesque hilltop neighbourhood could become the next Barcelona or Venice, as tourist numbers spike following last year's Olympic Games. While Paris has so far avoided the large-scale protests seen in Spain and Italy, some of its most iconic areas are starting to feel the strain. Stringent housing regulations and the city's size have helped, but locals who live on the cobbled streets of Montmartre say change is urgently needed. Anne Renaudie, who has lived in the area for 29 years and heads the Vivre à Montmartre association, said the historic quarter made famous by the 2001 film "Amelie" now resembles a theme park. "People come for three hours, have fun, buy a beret or a crepe, and leave — as if they were in an amusement park," she told Reuters. Meanwhile, essential food shops for residents are vanishing, replaced by snack stands and souvenir stalls. "We're down to two or three butchers, two cheese shops. They're disappearing one after the other," she said. "Now it's a lot of ice cream, crepes, taco places." Her association has proposed measures to the town hall similar to those in other European tourist hotspots: limiting tour groups to 25 people, banning loudspeakers, and raising the tourist tax. Tourism in the Paris region reached 48.7 million visitors in 2024, with about 11 million visiting Montmartre annually, largely to see the photogenic Sacre-Coeur basilica. The narrow streets have become clogged with tour groups, leaving locals frustrated. "Sometimes I have to really raise my voice and say, 'Sorry, I want to pass'," said Anthea Quenel, 44, a mother of two and local resident. And things may only get busier. Paris officials say 2025 is shaping up to be a bumper tourist year, with a 20% rise in January bookings over the same month last year. Eric Lejoindre, mayor of the 18th arrondissement, which includes Montmartre, said rising housing prices could drive residents out. "For me, the big issue is housing. That means fighting against Airbnb and rental platforms," he said. Real estate prices in Montmartre have risen 19% over the past decade, according to website A 40-square-metre apartment near Place du Tertre can now fetch around 500,000 euros ($572,000). To address this, Paris has tightened short-term rental rules, reducing the annual limit on renting out a primary residence from 120 to 90 days. Even small things, like the cost of a scoop of ice cream — which can set you back 5 euros, reflect the shift from neighbourhood to tourist zone. "It's like Disneyland," Quenel lamented.
