Former Big Ten guard helps Australia to 76-point win on day one of FIBA Women's Asia Cup
In a 76-point blowout, Australia beat the Philippines 115-39 in Group B play.
Shooting guards Miela Goodchild (19 points) and Courtney Michelle Woods (11 points), power forward Sara Blicavs (17 points) and forward Alexandra Fowler (11 points) led Australia in scoring. But of course, it isn't all about scoring.

Former Purdue Boilermaker Abbey Ellis is tied for the tournament-high in assists with point guard and teammate Stephanie Reid after both recorded nine assists in Sunday's match.
In addition to those assists, the shooting guard tallied eight points, three rebounds, two steals and one block against the Philippines. Ellis shot with 100% accuracy on both 2-point field goals (2) and free throws (4), but missed her one attempt from beyond the arc.
It was a strong breakout performance for Ellis, who was only added to the Australian team last week after guard Maddy Rocci was ruled out due to injury.

Ellis' debut this season in Australia's Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) earned her 2024-25 Breakout Player of the Year honors in her rookie year. The shooting guard averaged 9.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game for the Townsville Fire. She shot 40.6% from the floor and 35.1% from 3-point range.
The Australian spent her first two NCAA seasons (2019-2021) at Cal Poly before transferring to Purdue, where she opted to take a fifth year of eligibility and played three seasons as a Boilermaker until graduating in 2024. At Cal Poly, the shooting guard started 53 of 54 games played and averaged 15.5 points per contest. As a fifth-year senior at Purdue, Ellis averaged 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
Ellis and the Australians will face Lebanon Monday at 4:30 a.m. ET.

For Jamal, that night happened on January 26, 2007, when the New York Knicks hosted the then-champion Miami Heat, which was led by the 2006 NBA Finals MVP, Dwyane Wade, and his behemoth of a big man, Shaquille O'Neal. It was on that night when he established his career-high scoring mark of 52 points. It was such a scintillating game for the prolific guard from Seattle, Washington, that at one point, he made 16 field goals in a row. In an interview with former NBA guard Austin Rivers on the "Eye for the Game" podcast, Crawford remarked that he could have scored so much more had the game not been a blowout by the fourth quarter. Fueled by D-Wade's presence The greats always find a way to rise to the moment. On this particular night, with the defending NBA champions in town and poised to challenge the Knicks on their home turf, Crawford summoned his inner Jordan. He delivered a breathtaking scoring display that left the crowd electrified and Wade struggling to keep up, stumbling as he tried to match the three-time 6MOY step for step. He had shown flashes of brilliance, but this particular night was a turning point for him, especially when it came against Wade, who, at that point, was arguably one of the top shooting guards in the NBA. Advertisement The second was when he really began cooking, scoring 20 points on 7-for-7 shooting, highlighted by four triples that helped the Knicks take a 65-49 lead. His final three-pointer of the first half was nothing short of spectacular. Curling off a screen, he absorbed contact from Wade yet still managed to sink a high-arcing shot. "This is one of those days that you're in your workout and you can't miss and you made 20 shots in a row," Jamal recalled. Crawford surmised that he could have scored much more than 52 if the game had been close. When the Heat waved the white flag and took Wade out with a little over seven minutes to go, the Knicks followed suit and subbed Jamal out shortly after. For Clark, however, this is her first opportunity to play in the same home court that the Boston Celtics call home. 'Yeah, I mean, this is really, honestly, my first time to Boston. Obviously, if you're a basketball fan, you grow up a fan, you love the Celtics. Well, maybe I guess you could hate them," Clark said, which drew laughs from all around the room. 'But I think for myself, the Celtics is one of the premier organizations of the NBA. Former Spartan Jaden Akins scores first career points in NBA Summer League
Former Spartan Jaden Akins has officially scored his first NBA bucket -- well, NBA Summer League bucket, that is. Akins banked in a three-point shot in the Orlando Magic's NBA Summer League game vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night. Akins finished the game shooting 1-for-3 with his lone points being on that three-pointer made early in the game. Akins played 18 minutes in the loss to the Thunder. Advertisement As you would expect, Akins was stellar on the defensive end of the floor, recording three steals on Wednesday. Akins has played in two of the Magic's three NBA Summer League games so far this year. He is looking to break through and land on an NBA roster after going undrafted last month. The Magic have one more NBA Summer League scheduled for Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets.
