Norwegian Nobel Committee chair pays tribute to atomic bomb victims in Nagasaki

NHK5 days ago
Norwegian Nobel Committee Chair Joergen Frydnes visited ground zero in Nagasaki on Wednesday and offered flowers to the victims of the atomic bombing of the city.
His trip to Japan comes after Nihon Hidankyo, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, which represents atomic bomb survivors known as hibakusha of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was awarded last year's Nobel Peace Prize. Frydnes arrived in the city on Tuesday night following his trip to Hiroshima.
He then visited the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and viewed panels explaining the footsteps of Nihon Hidankyo and a banner bearing messages by atomic bomb survivors in Nagasaki. The banner had been brought to Oslo for the group's award ceremony.
At the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, he left a message in the guest book. The message reads, "Here in Nagasaki, a city marked by unimaginable loss, we honor those who died, those who remember, and those who have transformed their suffering into a lasting call for peace."
Frydnes told reporters that he was deeply moved by the atomic bomb survivors' testimonials and was at a loss for words.
He also said at a time of increasing uncertainty when nuclear arms pose a global threat, passing down hope to future generations and bearing the responsibility is what is most needed today.

Ishiba Offers Apology to LDP Members over Election Defeat; Talks about Avoiding ‘Political Vacuum'

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba offered an apology for the party's crushing defeat in the House of Councillors election on July 20, at an informal meeting of Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers from both the House of Representatives and the upper house at the party's headquarters in Tokyo on Monday. 'Many of our fellow colleagues have lost their seats. For that I deeply and sincerely apologize,' said Ishiba, who also is the LDP president. 'I have candidly reflected on why this result came about. I thank you and apologize to those who helped us in regional areas, the people at the party headquarters and those in LDP organizations. 'I want to sincerely listen to the opinions of the public. Why did this election result come about? Were our policies not acceptable? Was our approach deserving of criticism?' Ishiba did not make any mention of resigning in his opening remarks. 'I want to fulfill my responsibility not to create a political vacuum,' Ishiba said. LDP Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama said the party will set up an organization to review its performance in the upper house election. Moriyama said the new organization plans to release a report next month. Talking about the Japan-U.S. tariff deal reached last week, Ishiba said, 'We have to make utmost efforts to move the deal forward.' He added that the Japan-U.S. deal could be used as model for global trade. Aside from the opening remarks by Ishiba and Moriyama, the meeting was closed to the media.

New South Korea Foreign Minister Cho eyes visit to Japan on Tues.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- New South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun will visit Japan on Tuesday, South Korea's Foreign Ministry said, as the two Asian neighbors work to maintain stable relations. He is expected to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya during his two-day stay in Tokyo, the ministry said Monday. It will be Cho's first overseas trip since taking office earlier this month under President Lee Jae Myung. At the planned meeting, Iwaya and Cho are likely to affirm continued cooperation both bilaterally and trilaterally with their common ally, the United States, in response to China's assertive military activities and North Korea's nuclear and missile threats, a Japanese government source said. Following Cho's appointment, the two foreign ministers held phone talks and agreed to work together to promote stable ties and maintain close communication, according to Japan's Foreign Ministry. Lee was inaugurated in June after the impeachment and removal of his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, who briefly imposed martial law last year. Japan-South Korea ties, often strained over historical grievances including wartime labor disputes, have improved since Yoon became president in 2022. The South Korean Foreign Ministry added that Cho will head to the United States for his first meeting as South Korea's top diplomat with U.S. counterpart Marco Rubio, following his trip to Japan.

After staying in Japan until Wednesday, Cho is scheduled to visit the United States to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio for bilateral tariff talks with the administration of President Donald Trump.
