Maxim Tsyplakov dodges arbitration with Islanders in rare post-rookie NHL $4.5M deal settlement

Maxim Tsyplakov's arbitration case with the New York Islanders was unlike most others in the National Hockey League (NHL); because he almost went to a hearing just one season into his NHL career.
But on Friday, the Islanders slammed the door shut on that possibility by inking the 26-year-old winger to a two-year, $4.5 million contract. The deal arrives four days ahead of his scheduled hearing and makes Tsyplakov the second player this week to settle early, after Seattle Kraken's Kaapo Kakko struck his own deal.

Why Tsyplakov's case was a one-off
Most players don't hit arbitration eligibility right after their rookie campaign. Tsyplakov, however, did; thanks to a little-known rule in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.
Because he signed his first NHL contract at 25 years old in 2024, all it took was 10 games of professional experience last season to qualify.
From Russia to Long Island, his quick rise
Tsyplakov joined the Islanders in May 2024 after tearing up the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with 31 goals and 47 points in 65 games for Spartak Moscow. In his first NHL season, he posted 10 goals and 35 points across 77 games; solid, if unspectacular, numbers for a rookie learning North American ice.

Islanders banking on bigger leap ahead
New York clearly believes Tsyplakov's numbers will grow. The cap hit of $2.25 million annually is affordable, but also a clear sign they expect more than just middle-six production moving forward.
FAQs
Why was Maxim Tsyplakov eligible for arbitration so early?
He signed his first NHL contract at 25, which allowed him to qualify after just 10 professional games under the league's CBA rules.
How did Tsyplakov perform in his rookie NHL season?
He scored 10 goals and 35 points in 77 games for the New York Islanders during the 2024–25 season.
What is the value of Tsyplakov's new contract?
The deal is worth $4.5 million over two years, with a $2.25 million average annual value.
Is it common for rookies to go to arbitration?
Not at all. Tsyplakov's case is considered rare due to his age and contract status when entering the league.
This was more than a simple contract; it was a message that the Islanders see Tsyplakov as part of their future core. And they weren't about to risk losing control in a courtroom battle.

Ravindra Jadeja celebrates his century during day five of the 4th Test Match vs England (Photo by) India battled their way to a hard-fought draw on Day 5 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, but it was Ravindra Jadeja 's refusal to settle for a draw despite a mutual offer from England that triggered a stir. But Jadeja, fresh off leading a resilient fightback alongside Washington Sundar, declined the offer and pressed on. His determined century, under immense pressure after an early collapse (India were 0/2 in their second innings), became the turning point in India's bid to save the Test. 'Batting with a broken foot': Gautam Gambhir backs injury substitutes after Rishabh Pant's heroics; Ben Stokes calls debate 'ridiculous'

England captain Ben Stokes and India head coach Gautam Gambhir NEW DELHI: India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy due to a foot fracture — an injury he astonishingly batted through during the fourth Test in Manchester. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant, who retired hurt on Day 1 after being struck on the foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, was seen being carted off the field in visible pain. However, in a remarkable display of grit, he returned to bat on Day 2 and scored a half-century while limping, earning widespread admiration. Poll Should there be a rule for full injury replacements in Test cricket? Yes, definitely No, it's unnecessary 'It's been declared that he's out of the series,' Gambhir said after the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford. 'But one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well.' Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him — especially batting with a broken foot. I think the generations to come will talk about it and the generations coming forward should talk about it.' Pant's injury reopened the debate around substitution rules in Test cricket. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Though Pant was replaced behind the stumps by Dhruv Jurel, there was no provision for a full injury replacement — a rule Gambhir feels should be implemented. 'Absolutely, I'm all for it,' he said. 'If the umpires and match referee feel there's a major injury, it's important to have a rule that allows for a substitute. Especially in a series like this. Imagine if we had to play with just 10 players against 11 — how unfortunate would that be?' Ben Stokes press conference: On handshake controversy, India fightback, his own fitness England captain Ben Stokes, however, was firm in opposition. 'I think it is absolutely ridiculous that there is a conversation around injury replacements,' he said. 'You pick your 11 for the game, injuries are part of it. That conversation should be shut down.' Pant was not required to bat in India's second innings as centuries from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar ensured a draw. However, his courage while injured has become one of the defining moments of the series. With England leading 2-1, the final Test at The Oval begins Thursday. IND vs ENG 4th Test: 'A Test hundred is a Test hundred' — Shubman Gill defends Jadeja-Washington's refusal to shake hands early

Ravindra Jadeja celebrates his century with Washington Sundar during day five of the 4th Test. (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: India skipper Shubman Gill has backed Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar's decision to delay the handshakes on Day 5 of the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford, saying both batters deserved their centuries. The Test ended in a draw, but not before a brief flare-up between the Indian and English players over the decision to continue batting after England offered to end the match early. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill said the mood in the dressing room felt like a win: 'The kind of position that we were in yesterday in the morning, it definitely feels like a win. Especially losing those two early wickets... the way we showed grit and determination, it was just very pleasing to watch.' Poll Do you think Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar deserved to delay handshakes for their centuries? Yes, absolutely! No, they should have shaken hands. India were 0/2 chasing down a 311-run deficit but finished strong at 425/4, thanks to unbeaten centuries from Jadeja (107*) and Sundar (101*), who added a 203-run partnership. Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai As for the last-hour drama, Gill gave a blunt explanation: 'I think both the batsmen batted brilliantly and were in their 90s. And a Test hundred is a Test hundred at the end of the day. Washington's first, and from the situation we were in, they deserved it.' His comments came after England captain Ben Stokes expressed frustration over India's refusal to shake hands despite being well past saving the Test. A visibly irritated Stokes even asked sarcastically, 'Do you want to score a hundred against Harry Brook?' — after bringing on the part-time bowler in protest. Yet Jadeja maintained composure, calmly replying, 'I can't do anything,' before launching Brook into the stands to bring up his hundred. Ben Stokes press conference: On handshake controversy, India fightback, his own fitness Gill praised both Jadeja and Sundar's composure: 'It's all about taking the wicket out of the equation. Day 5 wicket, every ball is an event. We just wanted to go ball by ball and take it deep. They did that perfectly.' The five-match series now heads into a decider at The Oval, with England leading 2-1. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here.
