PMX extends olive branch to ‘Turun Anwar rally-goers': Have a safe journey home, be back to visit KL's historical sites

Focus Malaysia27-07-2025
WITHOUT even attempting to dispute or downplay exorbitant claims of a '500,000 turnout' at yesterday's (July 26) PAS-inspired Turun Anwar rally, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instead wished outstation attendees a safe return to their respective destinations.
With a tinge of sarcasm, he even reminded them to return to Kuala Lumpur (KL) in the future as domestic tourists in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY 2026).
This came about as PMX expressed his gratitude to all security personnel – from the police, firefighters, medical teams to volunteers – who have served with agility, discipline and high dedication to ensure public safety and order as well as the smooth running of the rally.
'To all attendees – whether voicing opinions, showing solidarity or coming from afar – I wish you a safe return to your respective destinations. May your journeys be eased and protected,' penned PMX on all his social media pages.

'And if you have the opportunity in the future, don't forget to return to KL. Historical landmarks around the capital, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building at Dataran Merdeka is currently undergoing large-scale preservation to boost tourism and support the economy in the Federal capital in conjunction with VMY 2026.'
On a more serious note, PMX who is also the Finance Minister reiterated that he remains steadfast and consistent in upholding democratic principles, namely freedom of speech and the right to express criticism.
Peaceful rally
'Criticism and differing views should not be seen through the lens of hostility; rather, they should continue to flourish and thrive as the heartbeat of a mature, progressive and sovereign nation,' he asserted.
'What matters is that it must proceed in an orderly, peaceful manner and in the spirit of love for the homeland.'
At the same time, PMX also subtly took a jibe at opposition leaders with tendency to absent from Dewan Rakyat proceedings.
'The same principle has been instilled through the Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQT) session in Parliament whereby MPs are free to directly pose any questions and raise objections to me as PM,' he justified.

'I urge you to continue pressing MPs to actively participate in all sessions, especially the PMQT.'
Though his gesture of extending an olive branch received widespread praises from Madani backers with some even described it as 'masterclass', those who are more neutral reminded PMX that the opposition deserved to be credited for staging a truly peaceful and civilised rally 'unlike the past when even the police car was overturned'.
'As promised by the organisers, the purpose of the rally is not to bring down the government of the day or to stage a riot and far from damaging public assets, but simply to ask the PM to resign,' recounted s commenter.
'This action is completely different from the previous street protest groups such as BERSIH and anti-government (anti-BN) groups.'
While praising PMX for his goodwill gesture to the opposition, another commenter apologised for having to caution PMX before 'matters fall further astray'.
'Please don't take the rakyat's opinions and voices lightly. Don't listen to the bootlickers around you. Keep working for Malaysia. ✨' – July 27, 2025

Three PKR leaders issue warnings to PKR-PH while Iswardy Morni expects 10 safe seats for Anwar's party

WHAT began as a promising week for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has quickly unraveled, with three PKR leaders sounding the alarm over looming political turmoil and issuing stark warnings to the party and its leadership. It began with Former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad cautioning government leaders against making dismissive remarks about the recent 'Turun Anwar' rally, warning that such comments could backfire by generating sympathy for the opposition. He was responding to Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming's claim that 20 tonnes of rubbish were left after the protest. Nik Nazmi said focusing on minor issues like rubbish could appear to trivialise public grievances and potentially carry unintended racial undertones, shifting public perception in favour of the rally organisers and distracting from the government's openness and the opposition's weak arguments. 'When you make an issue out of something small like the amount of rubbish left behind, it can be interpreted as trivialising the genuine grievances felt by the rakyat. 'Plus, it could also be interpreted as giving a racial twist to the matter indirectly,' he said on X. The government of Anwar Ibrahim was again warned on Friday by former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli that poorly managed negotiations between Petronas and Sarawak's state oil firm Petros could cost the national oil company RM15–20 bil annually, potentially destabilising Malaysia's economy. Speaking on his podcast Yang Berhenti Menteri, Rafizi stressed that Petronas contributes RM30–35 bil yearly to the federal government. 'It is not a paltry sum,' he said. Any sharp revenue decline could impact public services and trigger a credit rating downgrade, increasing national debt servicing costs from RM48 billion to as high as RM60 billion. 'If this sum drops, it would have an impact on the nation's ability to fund basic services,' he said. 'So, if Petronas loses RM20 bil, the company will be unable to pay the RM35 bil in dividends to the federal government,' he added. The last stroke came today with Iswardy Morni issuing a warning on the electoral prospects of Anwar's party, PKR. In a Facebook post, Iswardy casually wrote the following: 'There are only 10 safe seats for PKR in the upcoming general election. Tambun, Tasek Gelugor, and Permatang Pauh will be difficult to win.' Although PKR did not win the Tasek Gelugor seat, which went to Datuk Wan Saifulruddin Wan Jan of PN, it is significant that a prominent party figure like Iswardy predicts only 10 safe seats for PKR in the next general election, even suggesting that Anwar's own seat may be at risk. Such remarks are bold and could later be seen by discontented party members as a direct challenge to the Prime Minister. With the recent viral comments from three PKR leaders, questions are now being raised about whether the party will take disciplinary action. Previously, party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh declined to push for the suspension of nine MPs, including Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi, following the judicial appointments controversy. Could the leadership revisit that approach now, as these three leaders continue to openly criticise the party's direction? —Aug 3, 2025 Main image: Utusan Borneo

PM: Govt to restore ‘pondok' institutions with new technology and AI

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — The government will restore and elevate the nation's 'pondok' institutions to ensure they remain a bulwark for the faith, morals, and character of the Muslim community, in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stated that this initiative involves cooperation between the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to ensure that religious schools and pondok institutions that are in poor condition can be developed with new facilities and technology. 'We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah,' he said at the opening ceremony of the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) yesterday. Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Anwar said history proves that while the country's political, economic, and educational systems bowed to the colonisers, the pondok institutions remained the last bastion defending the identity of the Muslim community. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced that he will launch the Mushaf Ummah Program on Aug 8 in an effort to expand the dissemination of the Quran and the message of Islam worldwide through official translations into 30 world languages. 'In all my travels around the world - to Peru, Brazil, France, Cambodia, and dozens of other countries in recent years - every time I visit, I bring the Quran along with a translation in that country's language, and we distribute it officially. This, I believe, is a good approach,' he said. This year's 65th MTHQA, running from Aug 2 to 9, 2025, features the theme 'Developing a MADANI Ummah' and brings together 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia is represented by four participants: Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan from Perak and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi from Terengganu for the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini from Perak and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif from Kelantan are in the Memorisation category. The winners of the two categories will receive RM40,000 in cash, the runners-up will get RM30,000, and third place will receive RM20,000, along with jewelry sponsored by the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YaPEIM). — Bernamaa
