Boland the best in 100 years, but remains unlucky man
Statistically the best Test bowler in more than 100 years, Boland became just the 10th Australian man to take a hat-trick on Monday (Tuesday AEST) in Jamaica.
His haul came on a record-breaking day for the tourists, who bowled West Indies out for just 27 to wrap up a 176-run win and 3-0 sweep of the Frank Worrell Trophy.
Starc was the chief destroyer with 6-9 up front, but Boland again vindicated the selectors' call to go with four quicks and leave out a fit Nathan Lyon for the first time in 12 years.
Boland's inclusion also allowed him to join Glenn McGrath as the only paceman to play for Australia after his 36th birthday in the last 60 years.
In Australia's 39 Tests since his 2021 debut, Boland has played just 14 of them for a hat-trick, 6-7 on debut in 2021 and 10-wicket match haul in Sydney last summer.
All of it prompting Starc to label the seamer one of the unluckiest men to ever wear the Baggy Green.
"He would have played so many more Test matches in another team," Starc said.
"But every time he comes in he is on the money, like we saw this week. He is never far from the perfect length.
"He is preparing all the time to play, and this week he got his opportunity and showed what a wonderful Test bowler he is."
When Boland's next Test will come remains unclear.
Selectors have repeatedly shown that Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins maintain top billing in Australia's squad, with Boland only picked ahead of any of them once.
The final three Tests of this summer's Ashes will be played over a 23-day window, potentially opening door for the Victorian to come in if one of the big three are rested.
Otherwise he could be forced to wait again, despite having the seventh-best bowling average in Test history with 16.53, and the best of any bowler in the past 100 years.
Boland has been close to hat-tricks before, but nailed his execution in Kingston when he took the top of Jomel Warrican's off stump.

He had previously discarded Justin Greaves and Shamar Joseph, edging the former off before having Joseph trapped lbw on review.
"Today was three classic Scotty Boland wickets," Cummins said.
"Three right at the stumps or not far away. Really happy for him.
"He has spent a lot of time running the drinks in the past year or two when the other guys are fit, but he is always quality when he comes in."

Mid-year signing of player that could see Knights miss out on coaching candidate
The Newcastle Knights are reportedly looking into replacing head coach Adam O'Brien at the end of the NRL season and a candidate could already be ruled out after a bizarre mid-season move from the club. On Monday it was reported the Knights are preparing to part ways with O'Brien at season's end after another poor campaign. With this have come reports Kalyn Ponga could be shopped to rugby union amid the club's disharmony. And while there are reports the Knights are interested in a number of up-and-coming coaches in the NRL, one veteran coach might not be keen on the role. Last month, O'Brien came under fire for the shock move to sign Manly reserve grade playmaker Jake Arthur, as part of a swap deal that sees prop Paul Bryan head to the Sea Eagles. The deal was in danger of falling through late on Monday until both clubs agreed on the swap hours before the June 30 deadline. The Knights have a number of halfbacks in their squad and signing the fringe Manly player raised eyebrows. And now it appears it could rule out one coach from joining. Arthur is the son of former Eels coach Brad Arthur. Matt Arthur also signed at the Knights last year. And the former Eels coach has been linked to the Knights job during O'Brien's struggles. However, speaking on SEN Radio on Tuesday, David Riccio claimed Arthur might not willing to go through the pressure of coaching his sons at NRL level and it could see him rule out any approach from the Knights if they deem he could be a candidate. "Just off the top I was listening to the feedback in regards to Brad Arthur and the Newcastle Knights and the insinuation he would be a perfect fit given his two sons are now there. I see it the complete opposite way," Riccio said on Tuesday. "I don't think he is a chance to be there while his sons are there. I say that respectfully, because of the way Brad has operated in the past. In feeling uncomfortable in the situation having to coach Jake at Parramatta. And basically Jake made the decision to go to Manly, on the premise to get away from each other. "As much as they love and adore each other, it just wasn't working as far as the scrutiny and pressure is concerned. I think if Brad was to walk into Newcastle, it would be all on is he going to do with his sons. And I think that is a major factor in why he won't lean towards Newcastle." Riccio suggested the Knights know the appointment of the next manager, if O'Brien is to go, would also have to be someone that might be able to persuade star player Ponga to stay. This comes after reports emerged around their fullback. Ponga has reportedly signed with a New Zealand-based rugby union agent, and there's genuine concerns he might have played his last game for Newcastle in the NRL. The then revealed that superstar fullback Ponga has enlisted the services of a rugby union agent based in New Zealand, and it might trigger an immediate exit from the embattled club. Ponga is under contract with the Knights until the end of 2027 on $1.4 million per season. But he's previously expressed a desire to play rugby union for the All Blacks due to his Maori heritage. According to reports, Ponga and his management haven't gauged the Knights about a potential early release, but there's believed to be some openness at the club about him leaving early if he doesn't want to be there journalist Brent Read also revealed on Monday night that Ponga's management have 'shopped' him to European rugby clubs to see if there's any interest. Read reported that Ponga's name "has been mentioned" in meetings with officials of a new breakaway rugby competition in Europe.

Read in the box seat after Farnworth Social Circle's slip
Read took a significant step towards the Anthony Axford North West Cricket League Premiership title on Saturday as they won at Eagley and closest rivals Farnworth Social Circle were beaten at Kearsley. Read's 11th win in 12 games was achieved with comfort as they defended 209-7 from 45 overs to prevail by 55 runs against a relegation-threatened Eagley side who sit second-bottom. Advertisement Sri Lankan professional Sehan Weerasinghe enjoyed a notable day for a Read side who have lost only once in all competitions and claimed the full 12 points. He top-scored with a composed 68 before claiming 5-22 with his off-spin in Eagley's 154 all out. Farnworth Social Circle slipped to a 44-run defeat at Kearsley, whose seventh win in 12 has elevated them into fourth place. Kearsley opener Mohmedruhan Tirmizi top-scored with 76 in a commanding 275-7 before new-ball pair Mustafa Bashir and Irfan Kareem equally shared eight wickets in the visitors' 231 all out. Social Circle suffered only their third league defeat of 2025 and are sat on 103 points, with Read pulling away on 126. Fit or not? Unpicking Lions' mixed messages over Hansen
Mack Hansen is in contention with England's Tommy Freeman for a starting Test spot on the right wing [Getty Images] In the opaque world of the British and Irish Lions, the case of Mack Hansen's availability, or otherwise, for the first Test against Australia in Brisbane on Saturday (kick-off 11.00BST) is a curious one. There had been suggestions that the Ireland wing, who was expected to be part of Andy Farrell's squad for match at Suncorp Stadium, was carrying a foot injury after his impressive night against the AUNZ Invitational team on Saturday in Adelaide. Advertisement On Monday, the Lions assistant coach John Dalziel was asked about Hansen and he indicated the wing was fine, was taking part in the Lions walk-through session and was showing no signs of anything untoward. A day later and the picture seems to have changed somewhat. Another Lions assistant coach, Richard Wigglesworth, confirmed that Hansen had, indeed, hurt his foot against AUNZ. In a confusing interview session, Wigglesworth said that Hansen's injury was nothing serious and that the management were not overly concerned about him while at the same time admitting that anybody who didn't train on Tuesday is "a doubt" for Saturday. Hansen failed to play a full part in training on Tuesday. Advertisement So that makes him a doubt? Well... With injured full-back Blair Kinghorn also a concern, Wigglesworth was asked for an update. "If they [Kinghorn included] get on the field tomorrow [Wednesday] and they're better, then they're right in contention," Wigglesworth said. "We've not finalised anything yet, so a doubt is anyone who didn't train fully today, but he's definitely not ruled out." This is where it got odd. On the face of it, we were told, Hansen and Kinghorn could prove their fitness on Wednesday and put themselves "right in contention" to make a squad that Wigglesworth, during the same interview session, suggested has already been settled. These two things don't add up. Advertisement For when asked about discussions being had around the identity of the 23 for Saturday, he said: "We know we have got such quality across all positions, so we would be lying if we said it was easy. "In terms of how quick it was, there have been two or three conversations, we have picked and we will tell the lads tomorrow [Wednesday]." That indicates that Farrell and his coaches already know who has made the 23. So it doesn't really matter how Hansen and Kinghorn train, or don't train, on Wednesday because the 23 has already been sorted. Prior to featuring for the Lions, Hansen had not played since April because of an ankle injury [Getty Images] Asked if the injury to Hansen is why Scotland's Darcy Graham was rushed out here, Wigglesworth said: "Potentially. We need to make sure we're covered numbers-wise for the games coming up. Advertisement "So that was probably expedited a bit quicker because of Blair and Mack not being on feet today [Tuesday] and potentially tomorrow [Wednesday]." Later, Wigglesworth said that Kinghorn had actually been on his feet. The Lions are so secretive about giving any clues about their inner workings that they can tie themselves up in knots. The team, you'd hope, would be a whole lot more convincing than some of the chat from Lions coaches these past few days, all done in the name of stealth. They're here in Australia but they're something of a ghost squad in terms of the locals. Winning friends has pretty much always been a part of what a Lions tour is supposed to be, the very fabric of what makes this thing epic and unique. Advertisement This one is all about a cold-blooded winning of Test matches. That's the way they're doing it - nothing else matters - so they had better win. The biggest test of their mettle is looming large in Brisbane on Saturday against a Wallabies side who seem to be relishing some of the stuff emanating from the Lions camp - Henry Pollock's words about wanting to win the series 3-0 and Ben Earl's dream of this squad being remembered as the greatest Lions party of them all. Big Will Skelton was asked about all of this on Monday, meeting the Lions words with a smile that seemed to say: "We shall see..."
