'I want to sleep': Fight erupts on AirAsia X flight after passengers keep talking despite dimmed cabin lights

CNA4 days ago
SINGAPORE: A fight broke out between passengers on an AirAsia X flight on Monday (Jul 21) evening after three of them allegedly refused to lower their voices while the cabin lights were dimmed.
In response to CNA's query, AirAsia confirmed that the altercation took place on board flight number D7326, which was heading to Chengdu, China from Kuala Lumpur.
A man seated behind a group of women who were chatting reportedly asked them to quiet down so he could rest. This occurred shortly after the plane took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, according to the New York Post and Malaysian news outlet the Malay Mail.
The trio reportedly refused and carried on chatting, triggering a heated exchange between both parties. The male passenger allegedly called the group "stupid", asked them to "shut up" and said, "I want to sleep".
While a fellow passenger told the New York Post that the three women were "chatting too loudly", she noted that the man's tone was also "quite aggressive".
The incident went viral on social media, with footage showing one woman pulling on what appeared to be a lanyard the man was wearing, while screams can be heard in the background.
Cabin crew then step in to separate her and another woman, who was dressed in a green top and a baseball cap, from the man.
In another video posted online, the woman in the green top can be seen leaning over her seat before repeatedly punching the man, who tried to shield himself behind his tray table, while shouts to "sit down"

AirAsia X told CNA that the cabin crew had "acted swiftly and professionally to manage the situation in line with established safety protocols".
"The (local) authorities were notified and they met the aircraft upon landing to ensure appropriate action was taken," it added. "The incident did not impact the return flight schedules or disrupt operations."
The South China Morning Post said on Wednesday that a total of five Chinese passengers got involved in the dispute, with airport police arresting three of them and fining the other two.
On unruly passenger behaviour, AirAsia X said it "would like to remind all guests to be respectful throughout their journey".
"The airline maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any behaviour that may affect the comfort, safety, or experience of others onboard."
The US Federal Aviation Administration noted in August 2024 that airlines had reported more than 1,240 unruly passenger cases that year.
Some airlines like Ryanair have opted to tackle disruptive behaviour by imposing fines. Ryanair, Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers, said in a statement on Jun 12 that "disruptive passengers whose unruly behaviour" result in their removal from aircraft would be fined £500 (US$677).

Spanish teenager investigated over AI naked images of classmates

MADRID - Spanish police said on Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. Sixteen young women at an educational institute in Valencia, in southeastern Spain, complained about the AI-generated images of them which were circulating on social media and online. In December, a teenage girl complained to police that AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her "completely naked" were posted on a social media account started under her name. 'Photos of various people, all of them minors, appeared on this account. All these photos had been modified from the originals, which had been manipulated so that the people in them appeared completely naked,' the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement on Sunday. A 17-year-old boy is under investigation for alleged corruption of minors. The Spanish government said in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime but the bill has so far not been passed by parliament. In September 2023, Spain was shocked when 15 minors in Extremadura, in southwest Spain, were investigated for using AI to produce fake naked images of their female schoolmates. They were later sentenced to a year's probation. REUTERS Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Romanian deputy PM resigns after bribery case resurfaces

BUCHAREST - Romanian deputy prime minister Dragos Anastasiu resigned on Sunday after an old corruption scandal in which he was involved as a witness resurfaced at a time when the one-month-old coalition government is trying to enforce cost-cutting reforms. Anastasiu had been tasked by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan with overseeing the reform of state-owned companies, part of broader efforts to reduce the largest budget deficit in the European Union and root out waste and inefficiency. Last week, an old corruption case revealed that one of Anastasiu's firms had been blackmailed by a tax authority inspector into paying bribes disguised as consultancy fees for eight years from 2009 or risk lengthy inspections. The company later denounced the inspector, who was convicted in 2023. Anastasiu and his business partner were never charged with a crime. Anastasiu said his company had paid all its taxes and the bribes were "for survival, not profit". "I encourage every entrepreneur to speak out and say under what conditions business has been done in Romania and no longer accept what we did while making mistakes," he told reporters on Sunday. The government, which will hike several taxes from August and is laying off staff and cutting bonuses, has already faced several street protests but has narrowly avoided a ratings downgrade from the lowest rung of investment grade. Islamic state-backed rebels kill 38 in attack on east Congo church

Find out what's new on ST website and app. GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo - Islamic State-backed rebels killed 38 people on Sunday in an attack on a church in eastern Congo, city officials said. The assault in Komanda, a city in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is believed to have been carried out by ADF rebels, wielding guns and machetes, officials told Reuters. Jean Kato, an official in the city administration, said worshippers were taking part in a night mass when the rebels stormed the church in the early hours of Sunday morning. Thirty-eight people were dead, 15 injured and several others were still missing, officials said. Christophe Munyanderu, a human rights activist present at the scene in Komanda, said shots were heard overnight but people at first thought it was thieves. "The rebels mainly attacked Christians who were spending the night in the Catholic church," said Munyanderu. "Unfortunately, these people were killed with machetes or bullets." Top stories Swipe.
