Nigeria's Renaissance Energy halts production into Trans Niger oil pipeline
An environmental rights group said on Thursday that the pipeline burst on May 6 and spilled oil into the local B-Dere community in Ogoniland, the second such incident affecting the pipeline in two months.
Nigerian oil consortium Renaissance Group, which now owns Shell's former onshore subsidiary that operates the pipeline, "immediately isolated the pipeline and halted production into the line", Michael Adande, spokesperson for Renaissance said.
"With co-operation from the B-Dere community, our experts accessed the site, clamped the pipeline and recovered spilled oil, with clean-up preparations now underway," Adande said.
Renaissance said a team of investigators had confirmed that the incident was an operational one.
The Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP), with a capacity of around 450,000 barrels per day, is one of two conduits that export Bonny Light crude from Nigeria, Africa's biggest oil producer.

Nigeria embraces stablecoins; HK caps stablecoin licenses
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... A year after issuing its first batch of digital asset exchange licenses, Nigeria says it's ready to embrace stablecoins, but they must be regulated and comply with its financial laws. Meanwhile, Hong Kong authorities are urging caution in stablecoin adoption as its landmark Stablecoins Ordinance takes effect. The city-state says it will only issue a handful of licenses, and that most applicants 'will be disappointed.' Nigeria's stablecoin embrace Speaking at the Nigeria Stablecoin Summit in Lagos, the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Emomotimi Agama, backed stablecoins as disruptive financial tools. 'I stand before you as both a regulator and an advocate for responsible innovation. My message today is clear: Nigeria is open for stablecoin business, but on terms that protect our markets and empower Nigerians,' he said, as reported by local outlets. Nigerians have been the most avid stablecoin users in Africa. A June report by Yellow Card exchange revealed that nearly 26 million Nigerians have been using stablecoins, equating to 12% of the population, which ranks the country first globally for adoption. The report described Nigeria's stablecoin adoption as 'a signal of how financial innovation can thrive in response to local needs.' The DG joined several other African leaders who have acknowledged that stablecoins have become a vital cog in the continent's financial rails. In Kenya, the central bank revealed that one in three banks has expressed strong interest in stablecoins, while in South Africa, the financial regulators have pointed out that they expect stablecoins to become the primary form of digital asset adoption over the next five years. Agama says that Nigerians have been using stablecoins in cross-border funds transfers and, with the naira losing over 70% of its value against the U.S. dollar in the past three years, they have become a hedge against the local currency's depreciation. 'Across the continent, freelancers, traders, and businesses are increasingly opting for stablecoin payments to hedge against volatility, a trend significantly amplified by the naira's fluctuations, which have driven exponential growth in demand for dollar-backed digital assets,' he stated. Market giants USDT and USDC are the most dominant in the Nigerian market. However, Agama said, 'Africa needs African solutions that reflect our market conditions, demographic realities, and development priorities.' One of these African solutions is cNGN, Nigeria's first homegrown regulated stablecoin. Launched by the African Stablecoin Consortium, cNGN has hit $2.5 million in transaction volume across dApps, on-chain swaps, GameFi ecosystems, and merchant payments. cNGN recently told CoinGeek it's eyeing expansion beyond Nigeria, deepening its liquidity, and broadening its use cases. 'Five years from today, I want to see a Nigerian stablecoin powering cross-border trade from Dakar to Dar es Salaam. I want to see global capital flowing into Lagos as the stablecoin hub of the global south. This is not just finance. This is nation-building,' Agama told the attendees. HKMA: We'll only hand out a handful of licenses In Hong Kong, the city's de facto central bank has called for caution amidst rising public interest in stablecoins. Hong Kong's Stablecoin Ordinance took effect on August 1, and some of Asia's largest companies competed to be among the first to issue stablecoins under the new regime. However, the chief executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), Eddie Yue, now says that only a select few will receive the green light. In his statement, Yue warned against the 'growing frothiness' and 'excessive exuberance' as the new regime takes effect. He says that some public companies have been putting out statements mentioning stablecoin integration to excite investors and spark a stock price rally. '…in the initial stage, we will at most grant a handful of stablecoin issuer licences. In other words, a large number of applicants will be disappointed,' Yue warned. While HKMA hasn't revealed any details about the licensing process, experts opine that the big companies with extensive experience in tech and finance are most likely to beat the smaller startups to the punch. Those who have participated in the HKMA's Stablecoin Sandbox stand an even bigger chance. They include (NASDAQ: JD) stablecoin subsidiary, Animoca Brands, and Standard Chartered Bank (NASDAQ: SCBFF). While the new framework makes Hong Kong one of the world's most attractive stablecoin hubs, it comes with risks to investors. The city has seen its fair share of fraudulent digital asset projects, the most prominent being JPEX, which sank with over $200 million in user funds. Best electric toothbrush deals for August 2025, from Oral-B to Philips
Whether you need a simple, budget-friendly electric toothbrush or a premium model that comes with an app and digital display, there's a strong chance that you'll be able to find one on sale. These gadgets are often discounted, including brushes from popular brands such as Oral-B and Philips. However, not every discount is as good as it appears. We monitor electric toothbrush prices throughout the year and have noticed that some top-sellers often fluctuate. Electric toothbrushes are often listed with a 'one-off' discount of 50 per cent or more, but in reality, these deals repeat every month. With this in mind, we'll make sure to tell you if a deal is actually worth snapping up and when it's worth holding off. Below, you'll find the best electric toothbrush deals at Amazon, Boots, Currys and more, with discounts on models from our favourite tried-and-tested brands. Our testers have put many of these models through their paces, so you can be sure that you're getting a genuine deal on a toothbrush that actually works. Why you can trust us to find the best electric toothbrush deals Our team of deals experts track the prices of electric toothbrushes across the year, so they know how to spot a good offer from a bad one. We cover major sales events, including Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day, so we are well-versed in finding the best savings on top and trending products. Plus, we'll only recommend electric toothbrushes from brands that have been tried and tested by our experts. You can save more than half price when you buy the Oral-B iO3 bundle at Amazon. As well as a travel case, you get five replacement heads, which should be enough to keep you going for more than a year. The bundle hasn't dropped to less than £100 before, so now's a good time to snap it up – especially as it's rare to find a first-time discount on electric toothbrushes. We haven't tested this exact version, but Oral-B's iO models regularly feature in our round-up of the best electric toothbrushes, so it's a range that we trust. Right now, you can save £20 on the Ordo Sonic + at Boots and Amazon. Hold tight if you miss out on this discount, though, as the toothbrush is likely to drop in price again when Black Friday lands in the autumn. In his review, our tech writer, Steve Hogarty, praised its 'powerful clean' and W-shaped bristle that 'performs well around hard-to-reach areas'. There are four brushing modes, a timer and a silicone centre on the toothbrush head that helps to polish teeth. Sonicare toothbrushes are expensive, with premium models costing more than £500. Thanks to this Boots deal, you can save £180 on the 7100, which sits on the more affordable end of the range. Our tech writer, Steve, had high praise for the sonic cleaning technology. In his review, he said that it produces 'some genuinely dentist-fresh results'. If you notice it creep back up in price, it's worth waiting, as it's likely to get another discount soon. If you're heading off on holiday soon and want a sleek, compact alternative to your electric toothbrush, you'll want to check out this deal on the Philips one. The slim brush handle houses a single triple-A battery, and it delivers 'a solid 13,000 micro-vibrations', writes our tech reviewer, Steve. We often see deals on the toothbrush, and right now, you can get it for less than £20 at Superdrug. Our best mid-range electric toothbrush currently has more than 50 per cent off at Amazon. This puts it at around £80 less than its price listed at the online retailer for the rest of the year. Our tech reviewer, Steve, said the iO6 'delivers the same cleaning performance' as premium iO models and praised the five cleaning modes that 'provide plenty of versatility for your particular oral care needs'. It's on a limited-time offer, but don't worry if you miss out, as it's likely to be on offer again. What to look for when buying an electric toothbrush All of our best electric toothbrushes have strong cleaning power and are effective at removing plaque buildup. Some brushes, including those in the Oral-B iO range, have oscillating brush heads, so they rotate around your teeth to clean them. Others, such as those in the Philips sonicare range, are 'sonic,' vibrating thousands of times per minute. You'll find that some models come with pressure sensors, which beep or light up if you're applying too much pressure while brushing. Many also have two-minute timers that help you stick to the recommended brushing time. These are the most important basic features, and you shouldn't buy a toothbrush without them. However, there are many more features on offer, from magnetic chargers to apps. We list all of these features and more in our reviews, so you can be sure that you're getting all the extras that you need.

B&M is selling 50p tool that declutters your pathways & flowerbeds – plus it's a fraction of B&Q's price
B&M shoppers are rushing to buy a garden tool that's now just 50p – and it's perfect for cleaning up messy pathways and flowerbeds. The budget-friendly item has been flying off shelves during B&M's ongoing summer clearance, with customers calling it a must-have for giving outdoor spaces a quick and easy refresh. 2 Spotted in stores across the UK, the Wave Lawn Edging is now reduced from £1.50 to just 50p in B&M's massive summer sale. The plastic edging is lightweight but durable, and it's designed to neaten up lawns, paths, and flowerbeds with ease, no need for any heavy-duty digging or costly landscaping. Measuring approximately 9m x 10cm, the wavy strip is perfect for creating smooth borders between your grass and garden beds. It keeps soil and mulch neatly in place while giving your garden a smarter, more finished look. It's a brilliant choice for renters or those on a tight budget who want to improve their outdoor space without permanent changes. Better still, it can be cut to size and repositioned with minimal effort. Compared to similar items at other retailers, which can cost over £3 per metre, B&M's version offers a budget-friendly alternative. Shoppers have been rushing to get their hands on the bargain, with many sharing photos of their garden glow-ups on social media. One person wrote: 'Looks amazing for just a few quid. My flowerbeds finally look tidy!' It's not the only garden bargain catching attention this season. Earlier this summer, shoppers snapped up a £1 plant stand from B&M that many said made small gardens look 'bigger and more stylish'. Another popular find was the £2.50 stone-effect lawn edging, also at B&M – which gave flowerbeds and lawns a smart, finished look in seconds. 'I was quoted £10,000 for a garden renovation but did it MYSELF for £1,000 using ChatGPT to show my kids what single mums can do' And it's not just B&M offering affordable garden upgrades. Poundland's £1 solar lights, Home Bargains ' £3 garden mirrors, and Primark's colourful plant pots priced under £2 have all proved popular with budget-conscious shoppers. Aldi's garden Specialbuys have also been flying off shelves, with shoppers racing to get their hands on £12 pergola canopies, £7 fire pit bowls, and even £4 garden clocks. Other wallet-friendly finds include Wilko's £5 foldaway garden chairs, ideal for last-minute guests or small patios, and The Range's £1.99 artificial grass tiles, which some renters have used to cover tired decking or balconies without making permanent changes. Top gardening trends of 2025 Gardening experts at Barnsdale Gardens has shared the top gardening trends of 2025. Matrix planting It seems that a top planting trend for this year is going to be Matrix Planting. In essence, planting in groups or blocks to give an effect of being wild whilst actually being carefully managed. Selection of the plants is essential, to give year-round interest either with flowers, seed heads or frosted/snowy spent flower heads. Some recommend using plants that seed around, but this could make managing your matrix planting harder to keep under control. Chrysanthemum comeback I hope that the humble Chrysanthemum makes as much of a comeback this year as Dahlias have over recent years, because the simple single flowered types, such as 'Innocence' and 'Cottage Apricot' would be spectacular within a matrix scheme. The hardy varieties are so easy to grow in a sunny spot and give such a valuable burst of late summer and autumn colour that would lift any dull- looking border. Blended borders For some time now we have been promoting the growing of veg within ornamental borders and I think this could really take off this year. The choice of ornamental-looking varieties available in seed catalogues is phenomenal and, if managed correctly, visitors to your garden will not even realise that you have veg growing! Must-have tool My secret is out. I discovered the Hori Hori a couple of years ago and now it seems so is everyone else. It is such a well-made, adaptable tool that can be used as a trowel or weeding tool in the garden that and everyone I speak to who have used it absolutely would not now be without it. Enough said! 2
