Injured Haughey pulls out of world championships in Singapore

Defending women's 200 metres freestyle champion Siobhan Haughey said on Monday she has withdrawn from the world championships in Singapore due to a back injury.
Haughey, a four-time Olympic medallist, became Hong Kong's first swimming world champion with her 200 win at Doha in 2024.
'I have pulled out of the world championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury,' the 27-year-old said on social media.
'I'm sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what's best for me.
'As elite athletes, we're trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently.'
The swimming events at the world championships take place in Singapore from July 27 to August 3.

Pak in race against time to secure Pro League spot

Pakistan's return to FIH Pro League could be a turning point for the game of hockey in the country. PHOTO: AFP The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) finds itself in a desperate scramble to secure funding after receiving an unexpected lifeline — a potential place in the upcoming FIH Pro League. Following New Zealand's withdrawal due to financial constraints, Pakistan has been invited to take their place in the prestigious event — a move coach Tahir Zaman describes as a "golden opportunity to revive the country's hockey." The International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed in a recent release that Pakistan has until 12 August to formally accept the invitation to participate in the 2024–25 edition of the FIH Pro League, the seventh season of the global competition. "This is an incredible opportunity for us," Zaman told Telecom Asia Sport. "Playing against the world's top eight teams will do wonders for our squad. We may suffer heavy defeats at first, but with time, we will learn, adapt and grow. It's the kind of exposure we've been missing." He added: "Even if I were not the coach, I would still urge Pakistan to accept. The Pro League has transformed teams like India and offers direct pathways to top-tier tournaments such as the World Cup and the Olympics." Funding Woes However, turning this opportunity into reality hinges on a crucial factor — funding. PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid acknowledged the challenge in securing the estimated $2.5 million required to fulfil both home and away fixtures. "We anticipated New Zealand might pull out and we've been in touch with the government to explore funding options," Mujahid told "But we are still awaiting the official FIH invitation before confirming our participation." The PHF is now relying on urgent intervention from the Pakistan government, which is already facing criticism for failing to release player allowances for the past two months. Team captain Ammad Shakeel Butt has gone public with his frustration, hinting at a possible player boycott unless payments are made. PHF Under Fire The federation's leadership — including President Tariq Bugti — is facing intense scrutiny, not just from the players but also from the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). The government-run sports authority has demanded that PHF submit its financial accounts for the past two years before any funding can be considered. Despite the mounting pressure, Zaman remains hopeful. "We've been handed a rare chance. I hope the authorities act in time to ensure we don't miss out — again." If the PHF manages to raise the funds in time and confirm participation, Pakistan's return to the FIH Pro League could be a turning point for a sport that once brought Olympic and World Cup glory to the nation.

Qatar bids to host 2036 Olympic Games

DOHA: Doha is bidding host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, authorities said on Tuesday, as the wealthy Gulf state sets its sights on yet another major sport event to diversify its energy-reliant economy. One of the smallest and wealthiest states in the Gulf, Qatar had already hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Should it be chosen, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games, said Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. 'The official bid submitted by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games represents a new milestone in Qatar's journey,' he said in a statement shared on the official Qatar News Agency. India's 2036 Games bid a chance to boost infrastructure, says sports governance expert 'The bid builds on Qatar's proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, most notably the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,' Sheikh Mohammed added. Amnesty International and other rights groups claimed thousands of migrant workers died in the lead-up to the 2022 tournament, though Doha has said only 37 workers on World Cup projects perished – and only three in work-related accidents. President of the Qatar Olympic Committee Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani said Doha had ' made sport a central pillar of our national strategy'. 'We currently have 95 percent of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100 percent readiness of all facilities,' he said. Countries are no longer required to make their Olympic bids public. The Games are meant to rotate continents every season. With the 2024, 2028, and 2032 editions set for Europe, North America, and Oceania, there are high chances the 2036 Olympic Games will be held in Asia – or in Africa, which would be a first. Choosing the next host of the games will be the first major project for the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) new president Kirsty Coventry, who last month became the first woman to lead the body.
