Tsunami alert after powerful quakes strike off coast of Russia: USGS

Arab News20-07-2025
MOSCOW: Three powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Russia's far east on Sunday, triggering a tsunami alert, the US Geological Survey said.
Earlier 5.0-magnitude and 6.7-magnitude earthquakes did not initially trigger a tsunami alert, but were followed by a 7.4-magnitude quake at 0849 GMT, prompting the USGS to warn that 'hazardous tsunami waves are possible' within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter in the Pacific, off the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Authorities declare 37 GB villages ‘calamity-affected' as Pakistan monsoon death toll nears 300

ISLAMABAD: Authorities have declared 37 villages in Pakistan's northern Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region 'calamity-affected' after cloud burst-induced floods in the region, with the nationwide monsoon death toll nearing 300. Torrential rains have continued to wreak havoc across Pakistan since June 26, claiming 295 lives, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The deceased include 138 children, while the NDMA said 700 people have also been injured. In GB, Diamer, Skardu, Gilgit and Ghizer were among the districts worst hit by rains and floods this week, with human, livestock, property, infrastructure and crop losses. The situation has prompted authorities to launch immediate relief activities in these areas. 'Khalti upwards road is submerged due to flood,' the National Disaster Management Authority said. 'Flash flood/cloudburst incident occurred in Ishkoman Ghizer, 100+ families were preemptively relocated to neighboring villages as a precautionary measure.' It said an initial assessment of losses was underway. More rains with isolated heavy falls are expected in Gujranwala, Lahore, Sahiwal, Multan, DG Khan and Bahawalpur divisions, according to the NDMA. Isolated thunderstorms could also hit Islamabad and northeast Balochistan as well as Rawalpindi, Sargodha and Faisalabad divisions. Pakistan, which ranks among the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, has witnessed increasingly erratic weather events in recent years. In May, at least 32 people were killed in severe storms, while a third of the country was submerged by devastating floods in 2022 that killed more than 1,700 people, affected over 30 million and caused an estimated $35 billion in damages.

Texas mayor calls for flash flood warning system to lessen future fatal disasters

The mayor of a Texas city at the center of flash flooding that killed over 130 people earlier this month asked state lawmakers on Thursday to help get a warning system in place within a year. Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring told a joint Senate–House committee that met in his town northwest of San Antonio that he wanted a flood warning system to be designed and installed by next summer. 'We need solutions in place that protect the public and save lives,' Herring said. 'We will need your help to achieve this goal.' The flooding was on the agenda of a special legislative session Texas Governor Greg Abbott called. The flooding sent a wall of water down the Guadalupe River in the state's Hill Country early on July 4, washing away camps of children and Fourth of July weekend goers. After an initial committee meeting on the issue last week in the state capital, lawmakers traveled to the flood-hit area to hear from Herring, several other local leaders and local residents on Thursday. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha questioned whether a warning system would have done any good. 'The water came too fast,' Leitha told lawmakers. Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows said lawmakers would come up with 'some solutions' during the special session, which lasts for 30 days, but that the effort would take time. 'Our commitment is to continue beyond this session and these hearings, into the next session and the session after that,' Burrows said. The high casualty toll ranked as one of the deadliest US flood events in decades, raising questions about the lack of flash-flood warning sirens in hardest-hit Kerr County. Many have expressed concern about vacancies at National Weather Service offices due to staffing cuts under President Donald Trump. Several residents impacted by the flooding testified before the committee, with many saying they felt abandoned by city, county and state governments.
