"Supreme Court Is Not A Chief Justice-Centric Court": BR Gavai

NDTV20 hours ago
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai reaffirmed the Supreme Court's commitment to transparency in judicial appointments during a felicitation ceremony organised by the Bombay Bar Association. He emphasised that the court is working to dispel the perception that the Supreme Court is "CJI-centric."
Speaking at the Bombay High Court in an event organised by the Bombay Bar Association, CJI Gavai highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure a more inclusive and transparent appointment process. He noted that this approach had been strengthened since the tenure of Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
"...We have tried to dispel the impression that the Supreme Court is a CJI-Centric court," CJI Gavai said. "In the interest of the institution, from the period of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, we have tried to infuse more transparency in the matter of appointments."
He shared that the court had recently interviewed 54 candidates and recommended around 36 appointments. He assured that the selection process would continue to be transparent while ensuring fair representation from all sections of society.
"For the last three days, on the first two days, we held interviews with about 54 candidates, and yesterday we have recommended around 36 appointments...I must assure you that we will ensure that we adopt a complete process of transparency while ensuring that representation is given to all sections of society. The merit will never be compromised," he added.
Addressing the issue of case pendency, CJI Gavai acknowledged it as a serious challenge. He attributed one of the significant causes of pendency to judicial vacancies and assured that steps are being taken to address them.
"Pendency is a huge issue. We are trying to work on it. One of the reasons for dependency is the vacancies which are not filled up. This is the third function in Nagpur that has flagged an issue about interference in the functioning of the college. I must assure you that we will ensure that we will adopt a complete process of transparency. While ensuring that the representation is given to all sections of the society, the merit will never be compromised, and in so far as my own High Court is concerned, I can assure that the names, whatever are recommended, we will try to follow it up and that as soon as possible the Bombay High Court starts functioning at full strength so that at least the issue of dependency is addressed to some extent."
Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India in May. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Gavai, who succeeded CJI Sanjiv Khanna.
Justice Gavai is the first Buddhist Chief Justice and only the second from the Dalit community, after former Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, who held office in 2007, to occupy the highest judicial office in the country. Justice Gavai has also made it clear that he will not take any post-retirement assignments.

He added that the PM also informed Milei about India's innovative use of drones for emergency transport of medicines to remote areas during the COVID-19 pandemic. No search in McLeodgangj in connection with Dalai Lama's security or Khalistani terror financing: NIA

New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday categorically denied any raid or searches in connection with Tibetan Spiritual leader Dalai Lama's security or in any case of Khalistani terror financing in McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh on Friday, the agency said in a statement. As per the NIA statement, the search on Friday was carried out in the 'US donkey route' human trafficking case, as per details already shared through a press note issued. 'The search had no connection either with Dalai Lama or with any case related to Khalistani terrorists, and reports to the contrary in a section of the media are completely false,' the NIA said in an official release. Further, the local police was duly informed and had accompanied the NIA team during the McLeodganj search, conducted along with a similar search in Delhi. As contained in yesterday's press release, two more accused were arrested during the said searches in the case of illegal human trafficking via the donkey route, said the NIA. Meanwhile, celebrations are underway in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, ahead of the 90th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama. According to the Gregorian calendar, the Dalai Lama's birthday is officially observed on July 6. The occasion is being marked with festive spirit and devotion by Tibetan communities and followers across the region. Ahead of his birthday, the 14th Dalai Lama expressed his appreciation for the celebrations being held in his honour on Saturday, urging people to focus on cultivating compassion and peace of mind. In a post on X, the Dalai Lama wrote, 'On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in initiatives that highlight the importance of compassion, warm-heartedness, and altruism.' He humbly referred to himself as 'just a simple Buddhist monk' and noted that he doesn't normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, he wished to share some thoughts on the occasion. 'While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place,' the Tibetan leader affirmed. The Dalai Lama reaffirmed his commitment to promoting human values, religious harmony, and the preservation of Tibetan culture and heritage. The Dalai Lama expressed his gratitude to those celebrating his birthday and using the occasion to cultivate peace of mind and compassion. 'Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion,' he said. (ANI)

Firmly committed to promoting freedoms of Tibetans: US, in birthday message to Dalai Lama

Washington, July 5 (UNI) In a direct jibe at China, the US today said it supports efforts by the Tibetans 'to freely choose and venerate religious leaders without interference'. In a message wishing the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday, the US also said it remains firmly committed to promoting respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Tibetans. In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: 'The United States extends best wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. 'The Dalai Lama continues to inspire people by embodying a message of unity, peace, and compassion. 'The United States remains firmly committed to promoting respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Tibetans. 'We support efforts to preserve Tibetans' distinct linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage, including their ability to freely choose and venerate religious leaders without interference.' Earlier this week, ahead of his 90th birthday, the Dalai Lama had announced that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue. He made the statement in a pre-recorded video that aired at the start of a three-day religious conference in Dharamshala, where he has lived in exile since he fled to India in 1959. The English translation published on his website said the search for his successor will be carried out by The Gaden Phodrang Trust, a religious body of Buddhist monks who are part of the office of the Dalai Lama in India. The statement also added that "no one else has any such authority to interfere in the matter', in a snub to China, which had said that it alone has the authority to appoint the next leader of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally named Lhamo Thondup, the current Dalai Lama is the 14th in the line of leaders, and was born in a family of farmers in 1935. When he was two years old, a search party of the Tibetan government identified him as the reincarnation after showing him several possessions that belonged to the 13th Dalai Lama." In every case, the infant correctly identified those belonging to the 13th Dalai Lama, saying, 'It's mine. It's mine,'" his official website says. "This more or less convinced the search party that they had found the new incarnation." The 14th Dalai Lama was enthroned February 22, 1940, and renamed Tenzin Gyatso. The Dalai Lama has said the search for his successor would be "in accordance with tradition." China has termed the Dalai Lama as a "political exile engaged in separatist activities under the guise of religion'. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the spiritual leader "has absolutely no right to represent the people" of Tibet. Mao said that reincarnations of high-ranking lamas must have "approval by the central government' and 'be handled in accordance with national laws and regulations'. China passed legislation in 2007 that says the search for reincarnated lamas must take place within China, and that the government has the final say in recognizing them. UNI RN
