The similarity in names to certain franchises in the Indian Premier League (
) for a few teams in the MLC is not a coincidence.
There are direct connections between MLC teams and the IPL franchises. Four MLC teams - MI NY, Texas Super Kings, Los Angeles Knight Riders and Seattle Orcas are either directly owned or co-owned by IPL franchises.
Los Angeles Knight Riders & Kolkata Knight Riders : The MLC team is owned by Knight Riders Sports Private Limited (KRSPL). KRSPL also owns the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, who are three-time IPL champions, with their most recent win coming in 2024. Also known as the Knight Riders group, KRSPL also owns Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Trinbago Knight Riders.
MI New York and Mumbai Indians : Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians are owned by Indiawin Sports. The same parent organisation owns the MI franchise in the MLC. The Indiawin company is a 100% subsidiary of Reliance Industries. MI NY became the inaugural champions of the MLC in 2023.

Texas Super Kings and Chennai Super Kings : Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings have a connection with the Texas based MLC franchise. The Texas Super Kings are co-owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket, Ross Perot Jr., and Anurag Jain. In the two seasons, TSK have been a constant presence in the MLC playoffs, qualifying in both editions. However, unlike the title-winning spree of CSK, TSK are yet to make the final.
Seattle Orcas and Delhi Capitals : Despite not bearing any resemblance in their names, the Seattle Orcas are closely related to IPL franchise Delhi Capitals. The Capitals are co-owned by GMR group and JSW Sports. The Orcas are also co-owned by GMR, alongside Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Samir Bodas, Ashok Krishnamurthi, and Sanjay Parthasarathy.

IND vs ENG Test: 'I'll be disappointed...' – Ravi Shastri makes bold prediction about Shubman Gill
India's Shubman Gill, Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy during a nets session at Headingly, Leeds, England, Wednesday June 18, 2025. (Danny Lawson/PA via AP) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has made a big prediction for India's new Test captain Shubman Gill . Shastri said it would be a surprise if Gill does not go places in a few years. 'I'll be disappointed if Gill doesn't go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he's got a regal element of being regal out there when he's batting,' Shastri told Wisden. 'If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that's the one name I can see. 15:33 WV Raman backs Shubman Gill to fire in England: 'He needs the right support' 'He's matured a lot. The way he handles the media, the way he talks at press conferences, at tosses—he's matured a lot. 'Let him be there for three years. Don't chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you,' he added. Gill scored a sublime century on his captaincy debut for India in Headingley. Gill joined the elite list of Indians which includes Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, Vijay Hazare, and Dilip Vengsarkar to score a hundred on Test captaincy debut. Gill is the 23rd player to score a century in a debut innings as captain and the fourth-youngest among them, behind Herbie Taylor, Alastair Cook, and Steven Smith. Prasidh Krishna Press Conference: On Learning, Experience & the Road Ahead India's right-arm seamer Prasidh Krishna has also shared his thoughts on the newly appointed Test skipper, saying the young middle-order batter has created a 'very good atmosphere' in the dressing room. 'I think he did a pretty good job. All of us saw how he rotated the bowlers, made sure everybody had enough breaks, brought in people at the right times, and saw opportunities to bring in the right kind of bowlers. All of that was great, and knowing him, he set a very good atmosphere around. He's been speaking to all of us. We always go in with a plan, and the communication is happening there.' Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

Will Jasprit Bumrah Play Second Test vs England? Latest Report On Pacer Adds New Twist
Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah returned to the nets on Saturday during the optional training session ahead of the second Test against England at Birmingham, bowling for at least half an hour. However, a final call on Bumrah's participation during the second Test is yet to be taken, as per ESPNCricinfo. Before the series, team management had made it clear that the superstar bowler will feature in only three out of five matches, with skipper Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir staying tight-lipped about which matches he will play. The final call will be taken on how good Bumrah feels about his body going into the Test. During his net session, he went full tilt after not bowling on Friday. Everyone turned up for the practice session except for India's centurions from the first Test at Leeds, skipper Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. During the nets session, the main focus was giving a lot of batting practice to bowlers as during the Leeds Test, India faced collapses in both innings, losing their last seven wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and last six wickets for 31 in the second innings. This proved to be a massive factor in their five-wicket loss as England successfully chased down 371 runs. Over the last two tours in England, India's last four partnerships have averaged 19.11 in 2021 and 16.35 in 2018. India will be now aiming to get better contributions from their lower order at Birmingham. Now, India will be having a day off on Sunday before returning for another training session on Monday. On the day before the match, they will take things easy and most likely, batters seeking some throwdowns will turn up. Pacers who are likely to play in Wednesday are likely to get a Tuesday off from practice. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Virat Kohli's 'smoking' photo sparks outrage online: Fans claim it's a lollipop; defend the cricketer's privacy.
Just weeks after announcing his retirement from Test cricket and months after stepping away from T20 Internationals following India's victory at the T20 World Cup 2024, Virat Kohli is making headlines again — but not for his on-field heroics. This time, it's a viral Reddit post and an alleged photo of him smoking a cigarette that have stirred up a social media storm. Virat Kohli's quiet phase after IPL 2025 victory Kohli has kept a low profile ever since leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to their maiden IPL title in 2025 and the unfortunate Bengaluru stampede during the victory parade that left 11 dead. With his appearances in public drastically reduced, fans have been eagerly waiting for updates on his next move, especially now that he has confirmed he will only play ODIs for India going forward. But the recent viral image has brought him back into public focus, albeit controversially. A Reddit post claims 'Kohli smokes' — photo adds fuel to the fire The uproar began with a Reddit post titled "Virat Kohli smokes", which claimed the cricketer secretly smokes cigarettes despite publicly maintaining a clean and disciplined image. The post also accused Kohli of eating non-vegetarian food while publicly identifying as vegan, supposedly influenced by his wife Anushka Sharma's advocacy for animal welfare. The entire PR curated image of Kohli , the " non-smoker" and "non- drinker" is a scam as expected. His fans had the audacity to troll MS Dhoni for smoking a hookah. What a fake person man .😭😭😭 — tweeting from my grave. (@kalhonahoooooo) June 28, 2025 While the original post has since been deleted, the discussion didn't die down. In the comments, a user uploaded an alleged photo of Virat Kohli smoking, which quickly spread across other social platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. The image, though blurry and lacking verification, was enough to ignite a wave of speculation. Adding to the shock value, the Reddit post also alleged that 'hundreds of IPL players' regularly smoke during the season, though no names were mentioned. Fans divided over viral picture While some users criticised Kohli over the viral image, many others jumped to his defence, pointing out that the photo is too blurry to confirm if it's actually him. Several fans argued that the man in the picture doesn't even resemble Kohli, while others suggested it could be his lookalike. Some also claimed the object in his hand wasn't a cigarette but a lollipop, adding to the confusion. Can't even eat let the man enjoy a lollipop in peace and they want his test return. We are never seeing him again 😅 — Arnav (@arnav714) June 28, 2025 He doesn't look like Virat kohli Very big difference — Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange (@KumarTimes8) June 28, 2025 This picture is from 2023 though — Ahama Premaa (@AhamaPremaa) June 28, 2025 In addition to the debate over the image itself, several users voiced concern about Kohli's privacy being compromised, especially during his time away from the public eye. One fan wrote, "He's earned the right to live life on his own terms — whether in private or public. A legend who has won almost every trophy in cricket and now stands at the twilight of his incredible career. Everyone deserves a bit of privacy, especially someone who has given us so much." He's earned the right to live life on his own terms — whether in private or public. A legend who has won almost every trophy in cricket and now stands at the twilight of his incredible career. Everyone deserves a bit of privacy, especially someone who has given us so much. — đexv (@itruelydev) June 28, 2025 Virat Kohli has previously gone on record stating that he does not smoke and has always prioritised his health and discipline both on and off the field. Widely regarded as one of the fittest athletes in the world, Kohli is known for his strict fitness regime, clean eating habits, and teetotal lifestyle. Over the years, he has inspired countless fans and fellow players with his transformation and commitment to peak physical conditioning, making the claims in the viral photo even more doubtful for many who follow his journey closely.
