Lord Jagannath's chariot to roll on Sukhoi jet tires on Kolkata streets: Report

Mint01-06-2025
This year, Lord Jagannath's chariot will roll on Sukhoi fighter jet tires on the streets of Kolkata, reported NDTV.
The Rath Yatra, to be held on June 27, will be organised by ISCKON Kolkata.
The organizer arrived at a decision to run the massive chariot on Sukhoi tires after a search for around 20 years.
'The old tires, sourced from a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, have been replaced by tires used on Sukhoi fighter planes and manufactured by MRF,' said the NDTV report.
But it was a challenge for the organizer to arrange the tires as they had to assess the charriot's weight they could bear.
"Finding a weighing scale for a massive chariot was a huge task. We eventually managed to weigh it and it came to about nine tonnes. Factoring in the weight of devotees on the chariot during the Yatra, we realised that the tires would need to support a weight of about 16 tonnes," Radharamn Das, vice president and spokesperson for ISCKON Kolkata, told NDTV.
"We first spoke to Dunlop, but they had stopped manufacturing these tires. After extensive research, we found Sukhoi tires to be the best match. We first tried to contact MRF in 2018, but could not get through. Eventually, they got back six years later. In December 2024, they sent a team, we worked out a price and they delivered the tires a month back," Das added.
He further said that MRF officials were surprised when ISKCON told them about the requirement. "We were told that the only other client for these tires is the Indian Air Force."
The four tires supplied by MRF came at a cost of ₹ 1.80 lakh.
After the tires were fitted to the chariot, a 24-km long dry run was performed for a trial.
The Rath Yatra in Kolkata was started in 1972 with a small chariot.

Student Rides Bike For 2 Hours With Deadly Snake Hidden Under Fuel Tank

In a spine-chilling incident from Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, a student narrowly escaped death after a highly venomous Russell's Viper was found hidden under the fuel tank of his Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle. The student, a second-year BA student at a private college in the city, had taken his bike to the market and rode it for nearly two hours without noticing anything unusual. It was only when he felt a minor technical issue with the vehicle and took it to a service center that the shocking discovery was made. As the mechanic inspected the motorcycle and removed the tank cover, he was stunned to see the deadly Russell's Viper coiled quietly beneath the fuel tank. Service center staff quickly evacuated the student and called a snake catcher. Snake catcher Akil Baba reached the location and carefully captured the reptile. Speaking to NDTV, he said, "Russell's Viper is one of the most venomous snakes in India. It's possible that due to heat or when the vehicle was parked and got cold, the snake crept into the bike. Its venom is so dangerous that it starts clotting blood within minutes, and if not treated in time, it can lead to death." The locals believe the snake may have taken shelter in the vehicle while it was parked, possibly seeking warmth or a hiding spot. Fortunately, the situation was detected in time, averting what could have been a fatal accident. The Russell's Viper is responsible for thousands of snakebite deaths in India each year and is one of the "Big Four" venomous snakes, known for their aggressive defense and lethal venom.

Bollywood twist in Bengaluru? Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan's old Rolls-Royce cars fined ₹38 Lakhs. Know why

Rolls-Royce cars of Amitabh Bachchan, and Aamir Khan have reportedly been fined ₹ 38 lakhs. The only catch? The luxury cars in question, actually do not belong to the Bollywood stars. In a strange turn of events, the two Rolls-Royce cars—one registered under the name of Big B, and the other under Aamir Khan, were fined over ₹ 18 lakh and ₹ 20 lakh respectively, in Bengaluru, reported NDTV. The B' town stars, however, do not own the cars anymore. Both the luxury cars actually belong to Yusuf Sharif, a local businessman-politician better known as 'KGF Babu,' thanks to his roots in the mining town of Kolar Gold Fields—also made famous by the hit Kannada film KGF. According to NDTV, 'KGF Babu' had bought the Rolls-Royce from Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan a few years back, but never transferred the ownership to his name, on paper. That paperwork blunder finally caught up with him. The Phantom, from Big B has been cruising around Bengaluru since 2021, while the Ghost – previously owned by Aamir Khan — joined it in 2023—both still bearing Maharashtra registrations, causing the city's Regional Transport Office (RTO) to raise eyebrows. Officials revealed that the Rolls Royce previously owned by Amitabh Bachchan was flagged for non-payment of taxes in 2021, but since at the time it had not completed a year in Bengaluru, it was let off without penalty. But now, both cars have been confirmed to have been operating in the city well beyond the one-year limit set by transport rules, triggering these hefty fines. Rolls Royce Phantom was fined ₹ 18.53 lakh, while Ghost was fined ₹ 19.73 lakh over long-term usage in Karnataka without payment of local road tax. Before venturing into real estate, Yusuf Sharif used to sell scrap.
