Tropical Storm Barbara forecast to become a hurricane Monday as Storm Cosme forms in the Pacific

MIAMI — Two tropical storms gathered strength off Mexico's Pacific coast Monday, with one forecast to become a hurricane later in the day, forecasters warned.
Tropical Storm Barbara was about 185 miles (295 kilometres) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico early on Monday, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 km/h), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Barbara is expected to continue moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph for the next couple of days. It will reach hurricane strength later on Monday but should begin weakening by Tuesday, the NHC said.
The storm may bring total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches (51 to 101 millimetres) to coastal areas of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco states, with the possibility of localized flooding on Monday.
The NHC said swells from Barbara were likely to form life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along the southwestern Mexican coast, with gusty winds likely.
Another tropical storm, Cosme, strengthened slightly Monday but remained well off the coast of Mexico, about 630 miles (1,015 kilometres) south-southwest of the tip of Baja California, the NHC said.
At 2 a.m. local time it had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph. Cosme is expected to reach near-hurricane strength on Monday before turning to the northeast and picking up speed Tuesday into Wednesday.

The next few day will be another whirlwind of weather with more heat and wet weather on the way. Environment Canada says a hot air mass is expected to settle in Sunday and stick around for the next few days. 'The hottest day is expected to be Monday, with that daytime high of 32°C. Hot temperatures will persist into Wednesday. This heat will not get as warm as it did during the heat event last week and we are not expecting records to be broken with this event,' said Environment Canada in an email. 'It's been a long winter. Every day that's sunny and warm, we'll take all the vitamin D that we can take,' said Lefebvre. 'It's not going to spoil our Canada Day celebrations by any means,' added Dan Manns, who's visiting the capital. 'That's the beauty of Canada. We never know what we're going to get with the weather.' Lisa Addison says she is not a fan of the heat and isn't looking forward to more of it on the way, but she will sacrifice it to take her dad out from the hospital to get some fresh air. 'I love the hot weather,' said Tony Meagan, an Ottawa resident. Environment Canada says it will be a warm Canada Day despite the wet weather expected. 'For Canada Day, we are expecting another low pressure to move through early Tuesday morning. With this, the Ottawa area can expect more widespread showers and thunderstorms in the morning before diminishing to scattered showers in the afternoon with perhaps the odd thunderstorm. The daytime high is forecast to be 28°C,' said Environment Canada.

A low of 16 C and a 40 per cent chance of showers are in the forecast for tonight. Sunday will have a high of 28 C. It will also be mainly cloudy, clearing late in the afternoon. A low of 18 C and clear skies are expected overnight. On Monday, the capital will see a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 32 C. A low of 20 C, cloudy skies and a 40 per cent chance of showers are expected overnight. Canada Day will be rainy, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a high of 28 C. A low of 17 C and a 30 per cent chance of showers are forecasted for the night. The average temperatures for this time of year are a high of 26 C and a low of 15 C.
