Bihar Regiment marks 44th foundation day of its 21st battalion

Patna: Bihar Regiment Centre (BRC) marked the 44th foundation day of its 21st battalion at a function held on its ground in Danapur cantonment near Patna on Sunday.
The 21st battalion of the Bihar Regiment was raised on July 20, 1981, under Lt Col.
Mohd Mansoor Mallick. From its inception, the battalion bore the motto 'karam hi dharma hai' (duty is our religion), a creed it upheld across decades of challenging service, said BRC commandant Brig Kamal Deep Jaspal.
The foundation day event began with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the BRC war memorial by Brigadier Jaspal. Several retired officers and serving soldiers of the battalion had gathered to pay rich tributes to the martyrs.
Brig Jaspal, while addressing the gathering, recalling the battalion's distinguished service record. "From the cold heights of Himachal to the hostile terrains of Uri, the 21st battalion has carried the flag of the Bihar Regiment high. Their resilience, valour and loyalty to the nation are an inspiration to every soldier," he said.
The journey of the 21st battalion has been storied since its early years — from 1982 to 1985, it was in the mountainous terrains of Himachal Pradesh, honing skills and building camaraderie that would become the bedrock of its operational success.

In 1990 during the height of insurgency in the northern theatre, the battalion was deployed for Operation Bajrang, a mission that required not just firepower but strategic restraint and deep engagement with local population.
Their success earned widespread acclaim, the BRC commandant said.
In addition the battalion's most intense years came during Operation Rakshak in Uri from 1999 to 2003, a volatile period marked by frequent encounters, infiltration attempts and extreme weather conditions. Yet the bravehearts of the 21st battalion never faltered, and neutralised numerous threats working closely with intelligence units to dismantle insurgent networks, the BRC officer said, adding in Sept 2014 they were once again called during Operation Alert, a high-stakes mission involving counter-insurgency and civil assistance during flood and internal disturbances.

Nagpur: The aircraft landing at Nagpur airport have to touch down almost 450 metres from the starting point of the current runway, to ensure they are flying high enough to pass above some buildings on the flight path that have violated height norms. The presence of buildings that may pose an obstruction on the flight path has led to the change in the touchdown point on the runway. Normally, flights touch down close to where the runway begins. At Nagpur, aircraft have to slow the descent for a certain distance even after it closes in on the airport. Coming closer to the Nagpur airport, the planes begin descent from a height of 3,200 metres. They have to hold on the descent for some distance so that the plane flies over the buildings that pose an obstruction. In turn, the aircraft has to land a little further on the runway. At Nagpur, over 60 buildings around the airport violate the height norms. Mihan India Limited, the airport operator, has sent notices to the owners, and now the ball is in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) court. According to the Aircraft (Demolition of Obstruction Rules), only the DGCA has the power to bring down the structures. A hearing was held over a year ago, but MIL awaits a final decision from DGCA. A review meeting to assess the situation was held on Friday. It was part of the periodic review of structures done by Airports Authority of India (AAI), a source said.

Maha mulls ₹10L accident cover, ID for sarpamitras
Nagpur: Sarpamitras — snake rescue volunteers who risk their lives to protect both reptiles and people — may soon get official identity cards and accident insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh, with the state govt moving to formally recognise them as essential service providers. Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced a proposal to this effect after chairing a high-level meeting at Mantralaya on Wednesday. He said the govt would recommend to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis that sarpamitras be granted 'frontline worker' status under disaster management guidelines. "Sarpamitras play a crucial role in saving lives, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where snakebite cases are frequent. Their work often puts them at a greater personal risk," Bawankule said. "The govt is positively considering their long-standing demands, including accident insurance, official identification, and institutional recognition," he said. The proposal includes setting up a special online portal to maintain a verified database of registered snake rescuers across the state. Bawankule said discussions would soon be held with the chief minister to finalise the accident insurance scheme offering ₹10–15 lakh compensation in case of death or permanent disability while on duty. "These volunteers have been demanding such safeguards for years. Their selfless service deserves institutional respect and financial protection," he said. Wildlife chief Rao, however, reminded that sarpamitras must strictly comply with the Wildlife Protection Act while handling snakes. He added that no rescue work should be carried out without proper training and coordination with the forest department. The forest department has also proposed integrating sarpamitras into the state's official disaster response network, recognising their role during monsoons and flood-related emergencies.

Three killed, 10 injured as tractor overturns in Ramnad
Ramanathapuram: Three women were killed and 10 others injured when a tractor overturned into a dry irrigation tank near Appanur Road in Mudukulathur block in Ramanathapuram on Friday. The victims were identified as P Ponnammal, 62, N Rakki, 45, and K Muniyammal, 65. Police said 13 villagers — 11 women and two men from Koovar Koottam — travelled to Chinnapothukulam village, about 3km away, to buy supplies from the PDS shop. After collecting the goods, the group loaded the sacks into a trailer attached to a tractor driven by Kannan, 45, a resident of Chinnapothukulam. While returning to Koovar Koottam, the tractor reportedly lost balance while passing along the edge of a parched irrigation tank and overturned. The sudden toppling threw the passengers from the trailer into the dry bed, causing severe injuries. Ponnammal, Rakki, and K Muniyammal died on the spot due to head injuries. Ten others, including two men and the driver, sustained injuries.
