Indian clean energy firm SAEL to invest $954mn in solar manufacturing plant

Business Recorder20 hours ago
Indian renewable energy firm SAEL Industries Ltd will invest 82 billion rupees ($954.04 million) to build a 5-gigawatt (GW)-per-year integrated solar cell and module manufacturing facility in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, the company said on Monday.
Through one of the largest investments seen so far in the solar manufacturing space in India, the plant in Greater Noida will boost SAEL's total module manufacturing capacity to 8.5 GW.
Construction is expected to begin this year.
The move aligns with India's push to localise solar manufacturing. From June 2026, only domestically made solar cells from approved manufacturers will be allowed in government projects.
India currently has 80 GW of module manufacturing capacity but about 15 GW of cell capacity, with most modules relying on Chinese imports.
SAEL operates assets capable of generating more than 6.7 GW of solar power, including operational and constructional projects, and aims to drive that to 10 GW in three years. The company has already raised more than $2.4 billion in equity and debt, and has issued a $305-million green bond in 2024.
'By 2030, tentatively, we are looking at a power generation capacity of around 18 to 20GW as an independent power producer,' Laxit Awla, CEO of SAEL Industries, told Reuters.
The company also plans to file for an initial public offering this year, Awla said, declining to share more details about the timing and size of the IPO.
SAEL's revenue from its biomass and independent power production business nearly doubled to 6.87 billion rupees in fiscal 2025 from fiscal 2023. The company aims to grow its revenue from these businesses to 30.94 billion rupees by fiscal year 2027.

Indian rupee to dig its heels near 86/USD before US inflation data test

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is expected to hold near the key 86-per-dollar level on Tuesday, with traders awaiting U.S. inflation data that could influence expectations around Federal Reserve rate cuts. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated that the rupee will open nearly unchanged from 85.9850 on Monday. The Indian currency spent much of Monday trading in a narrow range around the 86 level. Price action 'absolutely suggests' 86-86.10 is a supply zone, a currency trader at a bank said, noting that a large UK-based bank was on offer on USD/INR on Monday. The pair 'is well-anchored' around 86, with U.S. tariff uncertainty lingering and Treasury yields inching higher. 'I doubt the upcoming U.S. inflation data will shift the tone much,' he added. Investors will be watching the June U.S. inflation data due later on Tuesday to gauge how much room the Federal Reserve has to cut rates. Markets are currently pricing in two rate cuts in 2025, with the first widely expected in September. Economists have warned that U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs could add upward pressure on inflation. The June print will be closely scrutinised for any signs of those effects filtering through to consumer prices. Indian rupee falls to over two-week low on corporate dollar bids, outflows Goldman Sachs said in a note that it expects June core CPI to accelerate to 0.23% on-month, corresponding to a year-over-year rate of 2.93%. It expects moderate upward pressure from tariffs on select categories that are particularly exposed. Looking ahead, the bank said tariffs are likely to deliver a somewhat larger boost to monthly inflation prints. U.S. Treasury yields moved higher before the inflation data, with the 10-year yield hovering near its highest level in a month, lending support to the dollar. Asian currencies were mostly weaker on Tuesday, reflecting cautious sentiment.

Currencies, stocks in tight range as markets gauge tariffs, China data

Currencies and equities in emerging Asia traded in a tight range on Tuesday, as investors remained cautious over tariff developments and assessed Chinese economic data pointing to underlying weakness in the region's biggest economy. Indonesia's rupiah slipped to a near three-week low, while equities pared early gains to trade slightly up. The Malaysian ringgit, the Philippine peso, Singapore's dollar and Taiwan's dollar also edged lower. South Korea's won and the Indian rupee held steady near their previous session's close. Asian currencies were in a tentative mood on Tuesday, said Jeff Ng, head of Asia macro strategy, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, adding that investors were awaiting further clarity on trade tariffs. China reported second-quarter economic growth that beat market estimates but fell short of the prior quarter's pace. While the economy has so far avoided a sharp slowdown, markets are bracing for a weaker second half as U.S. tariffs weigh on exports. One of the key focal points during trade talks between the United States and trade partners have been levies on trans-shipments as U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to curb China's trade penetration in the region. 'We think (China's) exports could slow visibly in H2, likely to close to zero in H2, especially if other countries start cracking down on transshipments under U.S. pressure,' Barclays analysts led by Yingke Zhou said in a client note. The Shanghai Composite index fell 1% to a one-week low, while the blue-chip CSI300 Index shed early gain to slip 0.5%. The Chinese yuan drifted lower against the U.S. dollar. Equity markets in emerging Asia were mixed: Singapore's stocks extended their recent rally, nudging higher to set an all-time high for the tenth consecutive day. Stock markets in Indonesia and Thailand edged higher, while those in Malaysia and the Philippines slipped 0.4% each. In Indonesia, analysts are divided ahead of Bank Indonesia's interest rate decision on Wednesday. A Reuters poll showed 15 of 29 economics expect the central bank to cut its key borrowing rate by 25 basis points. In East Asia, Taiwan's benchmark index, dominated by semiconductor firms, rose 0.6% to recoup losses from Monday, while South Korea's KOSPI slipped lower. An MSCI index of equities in emerging Asia ticked higher. Asian stock markets have rebounded sharply from their April slump, reaching multi-week highs as investors bet that the worst tariff scenarios are unlikely to materialize and that the duties won't trigger a U.S. recession or severely impact corporate earnings.

India bonds yields steady around key levels as RBI to mop up liquidity

MUMBAI: Indian government bond yields were largely steady after rising in opening trades on Tuesday, as traders cool their heels around key levels, and eye the response to the central bank's liquidity withdrawal operation. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond was at 6.3173% as of 10:00 a.m. IST after closing at 6.3163% on Monday. The Reserve Bank of India will conduct a three-day variable rate reverse repo auction for 1 trillion rupees ($11.6 billion). This would be in addition to 1.52 trillion rupees that it withdrew from the banking system on Friday via a seven-day operation. This is the second straight week that the RBI is conducting a shorter duration cash withdrawal operation, after doing a seven-day equivalent. 'The market will start absorbing such reverse repos and will not react much going ahead, like we are seeing today,' a trader with a private bank said. India's weighted average interbank call money rate as well as weighted average tri-party repo rate eased on Monday, with the latter moving below the RBI's standing deposit facility rate of 5.25%. The facility acts as a floor for the monetary policy corridor. India bonds flat; traders eye debt supply, RBI liquidity move Meanwhile, India's annual retail inflation slowed to a more than six-year low of 2.10% in June, lower than the 2.5% estimated by economists in a Reuters poll and the 2.82% reading in May. This has led to economists trimming down their full-year inflation forecasts and expecting at least one more rate cut. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy and is an indicator of domestic demand, however, accelerated to 4.4%-4.5% in June, from 4.17%-4.20% in May, according to economists. Rates India's overnight index swap rates were little changed with traders awaiting U.S. inflation data. The one-year OIS rate was at 5.54% and the two-year OIS rate was at 5.53%. The liquid five-year was at 5.71%.
