Rick Hurst, who portrayed the friendly but bumbling deputy sheriff Cletus Hogg on the comedy series 'The Dukes of Hazzard,' died at his home in Los Angeles on Thursday. He was 79.
His death was confirmed by Alma Viator, the wife of his friend and former colleague Ben Jones, who played Cooter on 'The Dukes of Hazzard.'
Mr. Hurst had been scheduled to appear at a meet-and-greet on July 3 at the Cooter's Place in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., a shop and museum dedicated to the TV show run by Ms. Viator and Mr. Jones, but Mr. Hurst had canceled because he was not feeling well.
Ms. Viator said in a phone interview on Friday that Mr. Hurst's death was 'shocking to all of us, even though we knew he wasn't feeling well.'
Mr. Hurst appeared as Cletus, the cousin of Boss Hogg, the commissioner of the fictional Hazzard County, in 55 episodes of 'The Dukes of Hazzard' from 1979 until 1982. The show ran for seven seasons on CBS.

CBS Revisits 'Beyond the Gates' Premiere Week in Special Broadcast Event

CBS Revisits 'Beyond the Gates' Premiere Week in Special Broadcast Event originally appeared on Parade. CBS is doing something interesting for fans of Beyond the Gates, as the newest soap opera to the lineup will take viewers back to where it all began next week. Instead of airing new episodes, CBS will be repeating the first five episodes of Beyond the Gates the week of June 30 - July 4. With the drama expected to continue with new episodes beginning July 7th. Beyond the Gates aired a trailer before it's launch back in January teasing the series. CBS officially describes Beyond the Gates as a soap opera that is 'set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have 'made it' and those who haven't are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.' Beyond the Gates has a cast of over thirty contracted actors. The soap is anchored by the Dupree family, starring Clifton Davis (Vernon Dupree), Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree), Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree), and Daphnée Duplaix (Nicole Richardson), and their respective families. Beyond The Gates is developed and produced by CBS Studios and the NAACP in partnership with P&G Studios a division of Procter and Gamble. The series is the groundbreaking first hour-long black soap opera to premiere in daytime. The creation is the brainchild of award-winning showrunner Michele Val Jean, in association with executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, and is the first new soap opera to premiere since NBC debuted Passions back in 1999. Beyond The Gates airs weekdays at 2 p.m. EST on CBS and streamed daily on Paramount Plus. Beyond the Gates can be streamed from the beginning on Paramount Plus. Matlock Duo Sing Us a Li'l Something, Rave That ‘Everyone' Now Wants to Appear on the CBS Hit — WATCH

Matlock co-stars Skye P. Marshall and Jason Ritter make a bit of beautiful music together at the top of the TVLine red carpet video above. After harmonizing a few bars and then amazingly speaking in totally perfect unison, the on-screen exes got to revisiting some of the freshman CBS hit's biggest twists. 'There were no other actors, it was just me and Kathy Bates in the room,' the actress tells TVLine West Coast Bureau Chief Dave Nemetz in the video above. 'I just had to breathe outside of that [office] door, and every time I walked in was very much, 'Don't try to nail it, just be honest. Just listen to what she's saying and respond wholeheartedly.'' As Marshall notes, 'It's the not acting, that's what makes great performances.' Matlock Boss Talks Finale's Big Reveal, If [Spoiler] Will Be Back for Season 2 View List Ritter then steps up to survey Julian's 'incredibly complicated relationship' with his father, Senior, who 1) passed Julian over for a promotion to partner 2) years after tasking him with stealing a legal document that was damning for Welbrexa, Jacobson Moore's Big Pharma client. 'As much as Senior drives him crazy, as much as he's been hurt by Senior, I think there's a part of [Julian] that still would love Senior to say, 'I'm proud of you, son,' one time,' Ritter posits. But will that longing for approval get in the way of Julian possibly allying with Olympia and Matty to pin the Welbrexa cover-up on Senior in Season 2? 'It's going to be fascinating seeing what happens next season,' Ritter ventures. 'I can't wait to see what the writers come up with.' To hear Marshall tell it, scores of other actors also would love to wield the Matlock writers' words, coming off the not-a-reboot's success as the TV season's most-watched new program. Whereas everyone, when the show was first announced in spring 2024, mocked the need for a 'reboot' of the late-1980s Andy Griffith courtroom drama, 'Now everyone's like, 'Can I please get on Matlock?!' says Marshall. 'Matlock means something completely different now, in such a short time,' she attests. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman 'flipped' the script on everyone, while executive producer Eric Christian Olsen, who had rights to Matlock and brought them to Urman, 'hit a lottery,' Marshall marvels. 'He built a universe for us and brought all of us together. I feel like we're the Avengers!' Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? ‘Dukes of Hazzard' Star Makes Emotional Tribute to Rick Hurst

Rick Hurst, the actor best known for portraying Deputy Cletus Hogg on CBS's hit sitcom The Dukes of Hazzard, has passed away at the age of 79, as reported by his ex-wife, Candace Kaniecki. While the cause of death has yet to be made clear, tributes to the late actor have continued to pour on across social media, with fans, critics and past cast members of The Dukes of Hazzard sharing their thoughts on Hurst's unexpected passing. Taking to social media to pen an emotional tribute to Hurst, Ben Jones -- best known for portraying The Dukes of Hazzard's unkempt mechanic Cooter Davenport -- shared a Facebook post highlighting his former co-star's rich personality and numerous achievements in the world of entertainment. "It doesn't seem right that Rick Hurst passed away this afternoon. When something so unexpected happens, it is 'harder to process', as the current expression goes," the 83-year-old actor wrote. "I have known Rick for over 45 years and there wasn't a minute of that time that he didn't leave me smiling or laughing. Sure he was a professional comedian, but mostly he just had a heart as big as Texas." "He was a fine actor, a splendid comic, and a wonderfully supportive colleague," the former U.S. House of Representatives member went on to say. "I don't know about y'all but I believe in an afterlife, and I can see Rick up there in Heaven with [deceased Dukes of Hazzard cast members] Jimmy Best and Sorrell Booke and Denver Pyle, putting on the funniest show inside those Pearly Gates." Similarly, Dukes of Hazzard fan pages across social media have echoed Jones' sentiment, mourning the loss of Hurst for both his charming wit and extraordinary comedic timing. "To fans, he was more than a character-he was family," one Dukes of Hazzard fan page wrote on Instagram. "His gentle smile, impeccable comedic timing, and kind-hearted spirit made every scene brighter. Off-screen, Rick was known for his generosity, humility, and love for connecting with fans at events across the country. Whether it was a reunion special or a meet-and-greet at Cooter's, he never stopped sharing his joy with the people who adored him." Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved
