As the 18th Lok Sabha completes its first year, here's a look at four-time MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal's performance in the lower House of Parliament and her plans for the constituency. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal speaks in the Lok Sabha during the budget session of Parliament, in New Delhi . (Sansad TV)
How do you look at your experience in the first year of the 18th Lok Sabha?
Unfortunately, discussions could not be held on key bills. Many bills were pushed through. I feel the ruling party should allow healthy discussions and strive for consensus on crucial issues affecting the nation.
What was the high point of the year for you personally or your party in the House?
I stood up for the farmers, who still have not got justice despite being assured a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) on food grains. I also spoke on the atrocities inflicted on farmers, who were stopped from proceeding to Delhi to make their voices heard by the Haryana government. I also raised the need to build consensus amongst the Muslim community on the Waqf Board (Amendment) Bill and not give an impression that Waqf properties would be usurped for ulterior purposes under the new dispensation. I also called for the release of the Sikh prisoners besides calling for reopening of the Wagah and Hussainiwala border points for trade and grant of a special industrial package for the border belt in Punjab.
Are you satisfied with the number of sittings of the Lok Sabha?
It is most unfortunate that the Lok Sabha sittings are being reduced steadily. We should focus on increasing sittings, and as a single member representing the Shiromani Akali Dal, it is often difficult to get time or opportunity to speak in the present circumstances. MP report card | Ruling party should strive for consensus on crucial issues, says Harsimrat
What is the most effective way to raise issues of public importance in the House?
Members have the liberty to raise emergent issues during zero hour, submitting questions and filing a call attention motion. Unfortunately, due to time constraints as well as the duration of the House, often members do not get an adequate opportunity to raise issues effectively. A via media should be created to ensure more members participate in Parliament.
What difference have you made to your constituency in the last one year, and what do you plan to do in the remaining term as MP?
I am very focused on my constituency and its needs. I have been demanding a 300-bed trauma centre at AIIMS, Bathinda, and the establishment of a State Organ Transplant and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (SOTTO) at the medical institute. Under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), development works totalling ₹ 9.78 crore have been recommended. I have also demanded the opening of the institute's centre at Mansa and the speedy completion of the Ferozepur PGIMER satellite centre. I will be taking up these issues for redressal.

Bihar: NIA charge sheets another accused in the PFI case, funds traced to Dubai

Patna: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has charge sheeted Md Sajjad Alam of East Champaran, Bihar, in connection with the anti-national activities of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), making him the 18th accused to be arrested and charge sheeted in the case. The NIA filed its supplementary charge sheet before the NIA Special Court, Patna, charging Sajjad under various sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A). Sajjad, an active PFI cadre, was arrested at Delhi's IGI Airport in January this year upon his arrival from Dubai. According to NIA investigations, Sajjad was channelling illegal funds from Dubai to PFI operatives in Bihar through a syndicate operating in Karnataka and Kerala. These funds were allegedly used to further the criminal and unlawful activities of PFI even after the organisation was banned by the Union government. The NIA stated that the broader PFI conspiracy aimed to 'establish' Islamic rule in India by 2047 and involved activities designed to terrorise people and disrupt peace by spreading communal enmity. The case was originally registered on 12 July 2022 at Phulwarisharif Police Station, Patna, against 26 individuals under IPC sections. The NIA took over the probe, invoking the UA(P)A and previously charge sheeting 17 accused. The PFI module was initially busted by the Patna Police and the ATS in 2022 while conducting physical training camps for Muslim youths at Phulwarisharif under the PFI banner. The camps, held at the house of Mohammad Jalaluddin, a retired Jharkhand police sub-inspector, along with Athar Parvez, allegedly aimed at brainwashing youths against India. Athar Parvez's brother, Manzar Alam, was involved in the 2013 Patna Gandhi Maidan serial blast during Narendra Modi's 'Hunkar Rally'. The then Patna SSP, Manavjeet Singh Dhillon, had recommended handing over the case to the NIA, following which the agency began its probe. The NIA has indicated that further investigations in the case are ongoing to uncover deeper financial and operational networks of the banned PFI in Bihar and other states.

Calcutta high court grants relief to Padma awardee monk in alleged rape case

Kolkata: The Calcutta high court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal government not to take any immediate action against 2025 Padma Shri awardee monk, Swami Pradiptananda, against whom the Murshidabad district police had filed a first information report (FIR) last week after a local woman accused him of rape, lawyers who were present in court said. The Calcutta high court. (File Photo) The court also accepted the monk's request for an in-camera hearing, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday. Swami Pradiptananda, popularly known as Kartik Maharaj, is head of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha's Beldanga ashram in Murshidabad. Skipping a police summon for interrogation he moved the court on Tuesday, seeking quashing of the FIR. 'The bench of justice Jay Sengupta heard Kartik Maharaj's petition on Wednesday and directed the government not to take any immediate action on the basis of the FIR and wait for the hearing instead,' lawyer Koustav Bagchi, who represented the monk, told HT. Lawyer Sandipan Ganguly, who represented the alleged rape survivor, objected to the appeal for in-camera hearing, saying monks who faced similar charges in the past were tried in open court. Ganguly cited the example of Gujarat's Asaram Bapu. 'Reacting to this, the bench expressed surprise on why the Murshidabad woman did not file any complaint in 13 years,' Bagchi said. The woman has alleged in her complaint lodged at the Lalbagh police station that Swami Pradiptananda raped her repeatedly between 2012 and 2019 by promising her a job. She has alleged that she was forced to undergo an abortion in 2013. The woman has also claimed to have talked to the monk over the phone on June 12 and alleged that two men sent by him threatened her the following day. The monk has shared dais with Bharatiya Janata Party's Bengal leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari several times in recent months. In May 2024, chief minister Mamata Banerjee publicly accused him of helping the BJP in the then ongoing Lok Sabha polls. The monk sent a legal notice to Banerjee, demanding an unconditional apology, but she stuck to her allegations. The ruling Trinamool Congress unleashed a fresh attack on the monk after he moved the high court. Bengal BJP leaders have alleged that the TMC was trying to frame Kartik Maharaj with trumped up charges.
