Odisha To Remove Bangladeshis From State Workforce In Major Crackdown
A massive operation is already underway to identify Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in the state. Taking a step forward, the state government now plans to ensure that no Bangladeshi is engaged by any outsourcing company in the state.
"We have a stated position to identify Bangladeshis staying illegally in Odisha. Now, we will make sure that no Bangladeshi is engaged through any outsourcing company in the state," said Prithviraj Harichandran, state law minister.
The decision comes amid rising security concerns in the wake of the massacre of 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
The government's agencies are in touch with various engineering firms. They have been asked to share information about any foreigner being employed not in accordance with the law and told to stop such practices or face action.
In the initial phase, the identification process would focus on the six coastal districts that are accessible through the sea route.
Last year, the Odisha government had directed all district administrations to carry out a comprehensive identification drive to trace Bangladeshi intruders across the state.
Officials were instructed to form joint teams comprising personnel from block offices, tehsils, and police stations to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, following unrest in the neighbouring country that saw the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.
In a response submitted in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, the government stated that 3,740 Bangladeshi nationals had been identified as staying illegally in the state, and that their deportation was under consideration.
Guidelines would also be issued for security agencies to identify the hotspots of illegal immigrants, verify documents of suspects, and establish a reporting mechanism to ensure infiltrators do not go unnoticed.
The guidelines would also help private firms carry out better background checks of their workers and report undocumented foreign nationals.
The operations will be led by the Odisha Special Task Force (STF) in coordination with multiple agencies such as the Marine Police, Indian Coast Guard, Railway Protection Force, district police and intelligence agencies.

Last Updated: Dhaka, Aug 2 (PTI) The Bangladesh interim government of Muhammad Yunus on Saturday said it would unveil on August 5 the 'July Declaration", coinciding with the first anniversary of the ouster of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime. 'The interim government has finalised the draft of the July Declaration. It will be presented on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, before the nation in the presence of all parties in favour of the mass upheaval," Yunus's press wing said in a statement. The Yunus-led interim government wants to give constitutional recognition to the student-led uprising that took place last year in July-August, which led to the ouster the Sheikh Hasina. This recognition is known as the July Declaration. Information adviser Mahfuj Alam, whom Yunus earlier called the 'main brain" or the mastermind of what is dubbed the July uprising, meanwhile, said the much-anticipated July Declaration was now a 'reality". 'It will be announced on August 5. I thank everyone for keeping this issue alive in the public conscience and helping pave the way for its implementation," said Alam, who was one of the top leaders of Students Against Discrimination (SAD). The SAD led last year's violent campaign that eventually toppled the Awami League regime, prompting Hasina to flee the country on August 5, 2024. However, the idea for the July Declaration arose to SAD leaders by the end of December last year. A leading SAD figure, Hasnat Abdullah, now a top leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), an offshoot of the SAD that emerged in February this year visibly with Yunus's blessings, on December 28 last year announced a 'declaration of the July Revolution" would be declared in the capital on December 31. In the subsequent days, SAD leaders put in their efforts to popularise terms such as 'Second Republic" through the July Declaration. They planned a grand rally to announce the 'proclamation" to 'bury" Bangladesh's 1972 'Mujibist Constitution", and declare the Awami League 'irrelevant", sparking political tensions and speculations. Yunus's government initially preferred to distance itself from the move, calling it a 'private initiative", but in a surprise announcement later said the government itself would prepare the 'proclamation of July uprising" incorporating views of the SAD, all participating students, political parties and stakeholders. The proponents of the declaration say it is aimed at 'unifying the nation around last year's core values of anti-fascism, democratic resurgence, and state reform" but it sparked debate among political parties – not only over its content alone but also over whether it should be granted constitutional status. Former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said there was no scope to bring any change in the political process outside parliament, which does not exist in the country. 'There is no scope for constitutional amendments outside it (parliament)," he said at a party rally in the capital. The senior BNP leader said discussions regarding constitutional amendment were still underway but if any amendments were to be made to the constitution, they must be done through parliament. Legal experts said the existence of Bangladesh would be at stake if 1972 constitution is scrapped, as demanded by the SAD earlier. BSF To Probe Chinese-Made Drone Found Near Tripura Border With Bangladesh
Agartala: The Border Security Force (BSF) would conduct a thorough study of the 'Made in China' mark drone, found near the India-Bangladesh border, officials said on Saturday. A BSF official said that the Tripura Police would hand over the drone, equipped with two high-resolution cameras, to them, and then it would be sent to the forces' (BSF) headquarters in Delhi for a methodical study. "A meeting between the officials of BSF and the police was held on Friday. The police on Friday sent the drone to the state government's forensic science laboratory. After the FSL examination, the police would hand it over to BSF," the official said. He said that the Chinese-made drone weighing 915 grams was found on Friday by a young boy in a paddy field near Durgabari Border Outpost of BSF, and the boy took it to his home and cleaned it with water. The boy found the drone in the paddy field 650 metres from the India-Bangladesh border. Subsequently, the boy's family informed the Tripura Police, who immediately brought it into their custody and sent it for FSL examination. The BSF official said that it is not yet clear from where the drone came into the Indian territory. Further details would be known after a thorough investigation, he added. BSF troops have enhanced vigil and intensified their domination along the International Border since the internal troubles in Bangladesh began in June-July last year, especially after the fall of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024. Tripura, which has an 856 km border with Bangladesh, is surrounded on three sides by the neighbouring country, making the northeastern state very vulnerable and sensitive to cross-border migration, crimes and movement issues. Except for some patches, most of the frontier had been fenced to prevent smuggling, trans-border crimes, cross-border illegal movements by infiltrators and inimical elements.

Kolkata Police Probe Espionage Angle In Arrest Of Bangladeshi Model Shanta Paul
The officials of the Kolkata Police are probing to figure out whether Shanta Paul, the Bangladeshi model arrested from Kolkata earlier this week on charges of illegally staying in the country after securing fake Indian identity documents, was working as a spy in the country just like Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra. The officials are probing this new angle after learning through her social media account that Paul went to the India-Nepal-China border and recorded a video. Police investigation also revealed that Paul had opened a page on social media called 'Asan Travels Kolkata and Bangladesh' where she was promoting her tourism business. The police officials are also investigating whether Paul took a loan from any state-owned bank in India to open a hotel, based on her Facebook post. A city police insider said that Paul had also travelled to several places in West Bengal and neighbouring Sikkim. "She posted photographs and videos of her visits on social media. As a travel vlogger, she went to Nathu La in Sikkim. There, she took pictures of the India-Nepal-China border. Investigation is on to ascertain whether there are similarities between her case and that of Jyoti Malhotra, as she also used to travel to different places in India as a travel vlogger and take pictures and videos there," the police insider added. Jyoti Malhotra was an Indian travel vlogger, who ran the YouTube channel "Travel with JO". In May this year, Malhotra was arrested by the police under the Official Secrets Act amid the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. Malhotra was accused of espionage, passing sensitive information to operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). It was learned during investigations that she used to take travel photographs and videos and smuggle those to Pakistan. The Kolkata Police is now investigating to find out whether Shanta Paul also operated similarly to that of Malhotra. Last Monday, the officers from Park Street police station arrested Paul from a flat in Kolkata's Golf Green area in south Kolkata. The police became suspicious after seeing the documents she had provided while applying for a passport. During the arrest, several Bangladeshi documents were recovered from Paul's Golf Green flat. It is learnt that Paul, a model by profession, entered India with a valid visa. However, instead of going back before the expiry of her visa, she managed to fake Indian documents like the AADHAAR card and Voters' ID card for herself during that interim period. After managing those fake identity documents, she started not only staying in Kolkata permanently but also earning substantial amounts through modelling and acting assignments, city police officials probing the case, said. Police have learnt that she had acted in supporting roles in some Bengali and Tamil movies during the last couple of years. She even purchased a property in the southern outskirts of Kolkata, which was jointly owned by her and her live-in partner, a resident of Andhra Pradesh and a Merchant Navy official by profession. Police are now investigating whether Paul, using her presence in the glamour world, had developed any influential connection within West Bengal as well as in other states, by which she was able to operate openly in the glamour and acting world without causing doubts in the minds of anyone. It is learnt that even in Bangladesh, she was quite successful as a model and also had won some awards there. She had earlier worked as a staff member of the Bangladesh-based Regent Airways.
