New faces impress as Proteas stretch winning streak to 10 in Zimbabwe

South Africa claimed a comprehensive innings and 236-run victory in the second match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday and stretched their current winning streak to 10 Tests. Corbin Bosch ripped out Zimbabwe's lower order, taking 4/38 on day 3 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo as the hosts, who were bowled out for 170 in their first innings, capitulated for 220 the second time around. The South Africans wrapped up a 2-0 series win. Codi Yusuf picked up two wickets and left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy three, while Wiaan Mulder ended an extraordinary match for him by knocking out the off stump of Zimbabwe's best batter Sean Williams. Besides his record-setting 367 not out in South Africa's 626/5 declared, stand-in captain Mulder also picked up three wickets in the match, with four catches, and any sense he should be concerned about his place has been extinguished. 'I don't care where they want me to play, I just want to play. Whatever plans they have for me, I'm happy to try to execute,' Mulder said.

‘Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be': Proteas hero Mulder

'As a team there are a lot of guys who might feel they are under pressure, but if you do the right things for the team first, always, and look after your game, then you can let the outcome go and just play.' Further explaining the decision not to go after Lara's record he said the result for the team mattered more than an individual landmark. 'We've won nine Tests in a row and that is the focus of this team. The focus is not on any individual's career highlights. 'Four hundred is amazing. Test runs don't come easy and there are a lot of Test batters that will want to get as many runs as they can when they feel they are playing well. 'Legends of the game deserve certain accolades. Lara is one of the best to ever play the game. Him having the record is very important, he inspired so many to play the game and it is important that it stays his record and the main thing is we win the Test match.' South Africa head into day three needing nine more wickets to claim a series win that in the long term is unlikely to be remembered. But for Mulder, playing as captain for the first time, for Lesego Senokwane and Prenelan Subrayen playing in their first Test and a young group looking to make their mark on the international stage, a Test win is something they can all celebrate.

Mulder sets highest Proteas Test score to sit among greats, eyes Lara's 400

Resuming on 264 on Monday morning, Mulder continued to play with the same composed demeanour that was such a feature of his batting on the first day. Despite a streaky outside edge through the vacant third slip for four to get his innings going, the rest of the boundaries hit on day two were all struck with the kind of style and authority that made Amla such a relentless operator. Mulder became the 29th batter in Test history to reach 300, flicking a full toss from Tanaka Chivanga to fine leg. He achieved the milestone off the 297th ball he'd faced, the second-fastest in terms of balls faced behind India's superstar Virender Sehwag, who needed 278 balls when he did so against South Africa in Chennai in 2008. He is also the ninth captain to make a triple century, joining a list that also includes Lara, who was West Indies skipper in 2004 when he set the world record against England in Antigua. Mulder is in a league of his own, however, in becoming the first player to make 300 in his first match as captain. Once he'd passed Amla, he opened his shoulders, playing in the manner that made a declaration at lunch seem inevitable. The Proteas have reached their sixth-highest Test total. Mulder's teammates and the management will surely insist he makes an attempt at Lara's record.
