Why Tottenham trio made to wait for Europa League medals as UEFA apologise
Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao thanks to Brennan Johnson's 42nd-minute winner.
The Spurs club captain, alongside skipper on the night Cristian Romero and midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, did not have medals around their necks on the pitch as it transpired that UEFA had run out.
It meant that when it came to lifting the trophy - Spurs' first since 2008 and first European silverware for 41 years - the trio were the only players to be medal-less.
They did eventually receive their own personal awards back in the dressing room, with more medals held back to be handed out to members of the backroom staff afterwards.
It was revealed that UEFA had planned for 30 medals to be handed out in the on-pitch ceremony, and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was the first to receive one from president Aleksander Ceferin.
James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall, and Timo Werner - all ruled out of the final through injury - were awarded their medals, but that left Son, Romero, and Bentancur - all of whom played a part in Bilbao - without their own.
Will Lankshear, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Championship side West Brom, received a medal ahead of the three players as well.
The incident prompted UEFA to release a statement admitting that more Tottenham team members had participated in the ceremony than anticipated.
"To our great displeasure, we did not have enough medals available on stage during the trophy ceremony presentation due to an unexpected discrepancy in the player count, as more team members - including injured players - participated in the ceremony than initially anticipated," Uefa said.
"The missing medals were promptly delivered to the winning team in the dressing room, along with our sincerest apologies for the oversight."
UEFA's rules say that both sides - winners and losers - are given 50 medals each, with it then being up to the club as to how those medals are handed out amongst playing and backroom staff.

Tottenham Hotspur Have Held Talks For This Manchester City Attacker: Good Choice For Spurs?
In a recent interview with TBR Football, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have held talks for Manchester City attacker James McAtee. Bailey said, 'They have held talks with other players in recent weeks, the likes of Xavi Simons and James McAtee to name but two, there are options for them and they will move on, and they need to,' McAtee's Impressive Rise In English Football McAtee served as a decent squad player at the Mancunian club after he put in a run of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. The 22-year-old found the back of the net seven times in 27 appearances for Man City last season across all fronts. The English playmaker deserves a lot of credit for averaging 3.09 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He kept 33.3% of his attempts on target. McAtee was even tidy when distributing possession in the opponent's half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 80% in the top tier of English football (stats via BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA – JUNE 28: James Mcatee of England controls the ball during the UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2025 Final match between England and Germany at National Football stadium on June 28, 2025 in Bratislava, Slovakia. (Photo by) Is McAtee A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank? McAtee can shoot the ball with power from long range and has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third. He is a good runner with the ball at his feet and can chip in by scoring a few important goals for his team. However, the English sensation has to find a way to add some assists to his game if he wants to play regularly in top-flight football. McAtee is far from a finished product but has got the potential to be a future star in English football. He is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a box-to-box midfielder or as a right-winger if told to do so. We can expect McAtee to add more firepower to Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank's frontline. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team football at the North London club next season. At 22, the future looks quite promising for McAtee as long as he continues to improve with each year. He has what it takes to be a success story at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the long run. Hence, McAtee would be a good choice for Spurs to consider in this transfer period.
