Christie Brinkley on Billy Joel, romantic rivals, and the ‘only time I miss having a man in my life'

News.com.au3 days ago
Sitting cross-legged on the floor of her home in the Hamptons, Christie Brinkley looks youthful and chic in an oversized blue shirt and jeans.
Little wonder: the model, actor, entrepreneur and mum-of-three has been commanding the camera for over half a century. Emerging at the dawn of the supermodel era, the 71-year-old has graced more than 500 magazine covers as well as starring in ex- husband Billy Joel's video for her own theme song, 'Uptown Girl'.
But if she exemplifies all-American wholesomeness, Brinkley also embodies survivor's resolve.
As she chronicles in her recently released memoir Uptown Girl, she suffered beatings by her biological father, the shock race car-related death of a boyfriend, humiliation by more than one husband, and terrifying helicopter crash in which she was certain she would die.
'I knew some memories were going to be fun to revisit and others would be really hard,' she tells Stellar via Zoom.
'But I'm not that introspective. Mum raised me to look on the bright side.'
From the day she was discovered, at age 19, by a photographer outside a Paris post office, Brinkley regarded modelling as a gateway to new adventures.
So much so that when celebrated agent Eileen Ford told her to lose weight by eating only fish, she ignored the advice.
'I am so about the experience, and I figured if I get a trip to Mexico, I'm eating tortillas, guacamole, I'm having margaritas,' she says.
'I want the full experience. I don't want to cut myself off from any of that.'
That includes the ups and downs of her relationships with four ex-husbands.
Brinkley's lawyer calls her a 'bad picker', and a psychiatrist she saw during her six-year divorce battle with fourth husband Peter Cook recommended she seek therapy for trust issues. 'But I prefer to keep on believing and seeing the good in people,' she says.
The marriages, to artist Jean-François Allaux, musician Joel, real estate entrepreneur Ricky Taubman and architect Cook, may not have lasted, but she shares 39-year-old singer Alexa Ray with Joel; aspiring actor Jack, 30, with Taubman; and model Sailor, who is 27 this week, with Cook.
The proud mum, who painted Joel's River Of Dreams album cover, has her own artworks of the children adorning her house.
Fondness for Joel endures. The couple met on a Caribbean island in 1983, where he initially dated Australian model Elle Macpherson.
'We were at his apartment and he said, 'I'm going to call Elle because I've been out with her a couple of times and I want to let her know that now I want to be exclusive with you',' Brinkley recalls.
'I don't know whether he was trying to impress me, or to be nice to Elle in case she saw a picture of us.' Today she and Joel maintain a friendship.
He is godfather to Jack and Sailor and, until his recent diagnosis with a rare brain disorder put his live shows on hold, they attended his concerts together.
'Alexa just had a long conversation with him and she said he sounded good, but he's got a lot of physical therapy to contend with,' Brinkley reveals. 'We're all just cheering him on.'
While she continues to evolve in business with her own wine and clothing labels, and as an environmental activist, the memoir allowed time for reflection, such as reminiscing about the days when images were shot on film.
'Now there are so many cooks in the kitchen you don't have that same kind of magic,' she laments. Ageing is another bugbear.
'You have choices … If you don't like something, there's a million ways to fix it,' she says, adding that energy and curiosity are 'more useful than any cream you can buy in a jar'.
As she chats, one daughter, then another, flies out the door. Does she ever feel lonely?
'I'm very content,' Brinkley says, glancing out of her window at the night rolling in.
'The only time I miss having a man in my life is when there's a magnificent sunset or a storm sweeping across, and I want to share that moment with somebody I love.'
Uptown Girl: A Memoir by Christie Brinkley with Sarah Toland ($36.99, HarperCollins) is out now.

‘100 million': Pure insanity horrifies UFC legend

UFC legend Ronda Rousey has experienced her fair share of fights, but it was an insane knockout at Power Slap 13 over the weekend that left her absolutely gobsmacked. The former fighter was sitting front row at Power Slap 13 in Las Vegas when she witnessed the bout between pro wrestlers Stunt Marshall and Dontae Smiley. A left-handed slap from Marshall sent Smiley limp. Footage shows Smiley's head hitting the podium before falling backwards, his body limp. Support staff supported his arms and shoulders as they guided him to the floor. The KO stunned the arena, with audible screams and gasps from the crowd. Rousey was visibly stunned, holding a hand to her mouth and looking around in disbelief. The viral video attracted a wave of comments from shocked fans. 'Is bro dead?' one person asked. 'That might be the most brutal one I've seen so far. Even Ronda Rousey was shocked,' another commented. 'Okay new safety measures should be implemented after this cause no way that table isn't padded on the sides,' another concerned viewer said. UFC President Dana White re-shared footage of the fight to his Instagram, stating that the footage had garnered 100 million views in 18 hours. The former UFC star Ronda Rousey spent most of her career as seemingly unbeatable. Her dominance came to a crashing halt when Holly Holm knocked her out with a stunning second-round head kick in 2015. It was the first loss of Rousey's career. She previously shared that a history of concussions has put an end to her UFC career. 'I'd like people to understand my reasons and motivations behind things,' Rousey said in an Instagram Live in 2024. 'I was forced to leave fighting when I was faster, stronger, more skilled and had a better understanding of the art than ever before. It was a really hard decision to understand, one that my body made for me.'

Eighties movie star unrecognisable in rare public outing

An eighties screen star cut a completely different figure as she ran errands in Los Angeles. The American actress, now 73, has been a firm fixture in film and TV and currently stars in Netflix hit Virgin River. Yet Annette O'Toole left fans doing a double take as she showed off her unrecognisable appearance on a day away from the cameras. She pulled on an oversized long-sleeve lilac top paired with green trousers, covering up in a pair of sunglasses. The Superman star left her silver hair flowing over her shoulders and padded around Los Angeles in dark trainers. She clutched her car keys in one hand and what appeared to be a dry cleaning slip in another. Showing that - despite her celebrity status - she's just like the rest of us, Texas screen star Annette was spotted collecting her laundry. Later on, she was seen with a black cross body bag and a camel-coloured coat after nipping back to her vehicle. She currently plays mayor Hope McCrea in Virgin River, yet has had a stellar screen career beforehand. The mum of two starred in Superman III alongside Christopher Reeve as well as in movies Cross My Heart and 48 Hours. On the small screen, she has starred in Smallville and the TV adaptation of Stephen King tome It, as well as in Nash Bridges. During her early film roles, her wavy brunette locks were on full display. They reached past shoulder height, but the star has now embraced her natural colour and a shorter cut. In her recent snaps, she also went fresh-faced as opposed to made-up, showing off her natural beauty. Perils of the job Annette, who is married to American actor and comedian Michael McKeen, recently opened up about feeling homesick after travelling around the globe with her job. She told Hello! about her Virgin River role, which sees her shooting in Vancouver, Canada, and admitted she missed her family. The star confessed: 'Oh, many times – the whole time! 'That's the hardest part about the show for me, it's being away from my family because my husband works as well and he's all over the place. 'So he's in a different location and my kids are grown and all over the place. 'My mum is 99. She's in LA, and that's hard too because I've been concerned about her, but she has wonderful help and we do the best we can like everyone. 'We're all in the same boat where we're kind of split and trying to be in two places at once.'

People are only just learning what the ‘Disney Hug Rule' is

If there's anything that can heal your inner child, it's watching compilations online of kids hugging their favourite characters at Disneyland. They really get you every time, but if you look closely, you might notice a familiar pattern – the Disney character will keep hugging the child until they break off the hug. While it's not an officially mandated rule (although many others exist … more on that later), it's an informal guideline that many Disney theme park staff have embraced, so it's now become a standard practice. The adorable guideline helps ensure that the child feels their beloved character isn't pulling away. According to the Disney fan site Inside the Magic, the practice dates back to Walt Disney himself, who apparently said, 'You never know how much that child may need that hug.' TikTok features countless videos of this rule in action, including one heartwarming clip from @flickdash, showing a montage of kids hugging the characters for as long as they wish, and the characters patiently hold on until they let go. In another clip by @mccallcook, liked by 3.3 million people, a girl called Hazel is seen running up to Anna from Frozen and refusing to 'Let It Go' for more than two minutes. The character is seen chatting with Hazel and asking her questions endlessly until her parents finally manage to guide her away. 'I THINK SHE BROKE THE RECORD WHAT DO YOU THINK?' Hazel's mum wrote in the caption. 'I think Hazie would've sat there all day long if there wasn't a line behind us.' In the comments, people were getting teary over the adorable moment. 'This is so pure and innocent,' said one. 'I'm sorry, but how do you not break down crying every time this happens?' another asked. However, some wondered whether the parents should've stepped in to break the hug sooner and let another child have their turn. 'As a parent, I would have stopped it earlier,' said one. 'The parents should know that the hug went on for way too long as they put the Disney worker in an awkward position,' added someone else. Other official rules at the parks include that characters must never eat in public, tattoos need covering, staff must be able to sign autographs as their character, and no staff member can say 'I don't know' in response to a question. Also, if a staff member wears glasses and their character doesn't, they'll need to wear contact lenses to keep it authentic. For guests, no one over 14 is allowed to wear costumes so they aren't mistaken for real characters, and guests staying at the Disney Hotel aren't permitted to hang wet towels, swimmers, or clothes off their balconies.
