CAF15-02-2025
The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations is the most prestigious competition on the African continent. It is the meeting place for the best African talents in football.
Among the most anticipated players of the tournament, more and more are from the African championships.
CAFOnline selects five players from CAF interclub competitions who will be able to light up the competition with their talent from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 in Morocco.
ISSOUFOU DAYO (RS BERKANE & BURKINA FASO)
In Morocco, at the end of this year, Issouffou Dayo will probably play his fourth TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso after Gabon 2017, Cameroon 2021 and Ivory Coast 2023. The defender of the Renaissance Sportive de Berkane is already a regular in this competition where he has distinguished himself each time. A bronze medallist in 2017 in Gabon, he also brought back fourth place from Cameroon in 2021.
A member of the Renaissance Sportive de Berkane since 2016, Dayo (33 years old) is one of the greatest architects of the laurels accumulated by the Moroccan club in recent years: 3 Throne Cups (2018, 2021, 2022), 2 CAF TotalEnergies Confederation Cups (2020 and 2022), 1 CAF Super Cup (2022). The defender of the Stallions, now captain of the Berkane club, has also been a finalist in the Confederation Cup twice (2019 and 2024).
This season, the Burkinabe and his club are still on a good run both in the local league and on the continental scene. Leader of the Botola with 49 points after 20 rounds (12 points ahead of AS FAR, its immediate pursuer), the Moroccan club also reigns supreme in the Confederation Cup with an almost flawless run in the group stage, in Pool B (16 points) out of 18). A performance to which Dayo, one of the club's furniture, is no stranger, he who has 4 goals and two assists in this continental competition.
An undisputed starter in the centre of the defence of Burkina Faso, Dayo is one of the oldest members of this selection that has welcomed him since 2012. His statistics show 72 caps for 9 goals.
TEBOHO MOKOENA (MAMELODI SUNDOWNS & SOUTH AFRICA)
Last year in Cote d'Ivoire, Teboho Mokoena lit up the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations with his talent, contributing to South Africa's brilliant run in the competition. His magnificent goal from a free kick at the very end of the match at the San Pedro Stadium, had crucified Morocco in the round of 16, further exposing his class to the world. It was his second goal in the competition after the one he scored in the 4-0 win over Namibia on the second day of the group stage.
One of the best assets of the Bafana Bafana selection, the 28-year-old defensive midfielder is expected to play in his second TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations at the end of the year in Morocco. He is having a remarkable season with Mamelodi Sundowns, leader of the South African league with 42 points in 16 rounds and qualified for the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.
AMANALLAH MEMMICHE (ESPERANCE DE TUNIS & TUNISIA)
At 20 years old, Amanallah Memmiche is one of the greatest hopes of Tunisian football and is preparing to play in his first Africa Cup of Nations at the end of the year in Morocco.
An undisputed starter in goal for Esperance de Tunis, the goalkeeper is multiplying remarkable performances with his club, which he led to the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League last season.
Currently leader of the Tunisian Ligue 1 championship with 42 points after 19 rounds, Esperance is also qualified for the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after finishing top of Group D with 13 points in the group stage.
Before the AFCON, Memmiche will play in the FIFA Club World Cup with Esperance next summer in the United States.
DJIGUI DIARRA (YOUNG AFRICANS & MALI)
A member of the Young Africans in Tanzania since 2021, Malian Djigui Diarra is one of the best goalkeepers on the continent. His performances have largely contributed to making his club one of the references in Africa in recent seasons.
Finalists of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup in 2023, the Malian goalkeeper and his team were stopped last season in the quarter-finals of the Champions League before failing this year in the group stage. The former Stade Malien goalkeeper and the team he captains have also won the last three editions of the Tanzanian championship.
In Morocco, he will probably play in his fifth TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations after Gabon 2017, Egypt 2029, Cameroon 2021 and Ivory Coast 2023. An undisputed starter in goal for the Eagles, the 29-year-old, 65 caps, hopes to make history with the Eagles on Cherifian soil.
FISTON MAYELE (PYRAMIDS FC & DR CONGO)
Fiston Mayele is in great form with Pyramids FC this season. With his four goals, he contributed to the brilliant performances of the Egyptian club who brilliantly qualified for the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after finishing co-leaders of Group D with 13 points, level with Esperance de Tunis.
His team also sits at the top of the Egyptian league standings with 30 points after 13 rounds, ahead of giants Al Ahly (29 points) and Zamalek (26 points).
One of the important elements of Sébastien Désarbre's system, Fiston Kalala Mayele (30 years old) should play his second TotalEnergies CAF AFCON with the Democratic Republic of Congo after a first experience last year in Côte d'Ivoire where his team finished fourth.

Morocco v Angola: Atlas Lions launch third title quest against resurgent Palancas Negras

Morocco will kick off their quest for a third title at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 with a high-stakes Group A fixture against Angola on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. The North African giants are aiming for an unprecedented third CHAN title, having lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020. They enter this tournament with a strong pedigree and a squad driven by ambition, despite facing pre-tournament challenges. Head coach Tarik Sektioui has emphasized the importance of beginning the campaign with a win, noting that a positive start would instill belief and momentum in a competition where consistency often determines eventual champions. "For us, it is very important to approach the first match with a victory that will allow the players to gain in terms of confidence and positive state of mind," Sektioui told the media on the eve of the match. "We are determined to win this match and have prepared well for it." Sektioui's message was echoed by team captain Mohamed Rabie Hrimat, who said that the players understand the weight of expectation and are fully focused on delivering results. "The national team is determined to win the trophy and the players are aware of the responsibility they have," Hrimat stated. "We have enough experience in African competitions to make a difference. Our main objective is to get through the group stage and ultimately win the title." Morocco's success in previous CHAN tournaments has made them one of the most feared sides in the competition. They have gone 13 matches unbeaten at CHAN, winning 11 and drawing 2. Their last defeat came in 2014 against Côte d'Ivoire. Their previous opening matches include emphatic victories such as a 4-0 demolition of Mauritania in 2018 and a narrow 1-0 win over Togo in 2020. This will be Morocco's fifth appearance at the CHAN finals. They are the only team to have successfully defended the title and remain unbeaten in opening matches. However, Angola presents a significant challenge. The Palancas Negras are themselves veterans of the competition, with this being their fifth appearance. Their best finish came in 2011 when they finished runners-up. Angola head coach Pedro Gonçalves, who has led the national team since 2019, expressed confidence in his side's ability to challenge the favourites. "We're not thinking beyond the Morocco match. They are strong, they want to win — but so do we. And I'm confident their hunger won't exceed ours," Gonçalves stated. Angola's recent record in continental competition has shown steady progress. Under Gonçalves, the team enjoyed its best-ever Africa Cup of Nations campaign and were crowned COSAFA champions. The coach believes this success reflects the growth of Angolan football. "2024 was a very good year for us. Not only did we win COSAFA, but we had our best-ever AFCON. What made it even more special was how we united the nation behind the team," he added. But CHAN preparations were not without difficulty. Under the competition's eligibility rules, only players competing in domestic leagues can participate. This led to the loss of five players who secured moves abroad during Angola's training camp. "Since we began preparations, five players have moved abroad. That's something we never used to see," Gonçalves said. "It shows how Angolan players are being valued more. Technically, they've always been gifted, but now they're developing holistically." Sunday's encounter in Nairobi will be the first-ever CHAN meeting between Morocco and Angola. However, Morocco holds an advantage in experience against Southern African opponents, having won previous CHAN matches against Namibia and Zambia, and drawn against Zimbabwe. Angola's record in opening matches has been less impressive. They are winless in four opening fixtures, with three draws and a single loss. Their last win at the CHAN came in 2018, a 1-0 victory over Cameroon. Since then, they have gone four matches without a win. Despite this, Angola have proven to be difficult opponents. They have drawn eight times in their CHAN history, including memorable high-scoring affairs like the 3-3 draw against Mali in 2022. Both teams qualified for CHAN 2024 with commanding performances. Morocco topped their qualification group, while Angola defeated Lesotho 2-1 on aggregate, winning 2-0 away in the first leg before a narrow 1-0 defeat at home. Sektioui highlighted the resilience of his players, praising their tactical maturity and determination amid setbacks during the pre-tournament phase. "We started with native players born from 2000 onwards, but the departure of 11 players to new clubs and the injuries of two others affected our preparations," he explained. "The players retained in the final list have shown technical and tactical maturity that we will use to make good progress during this championship." He also welcomed the late additions of veteran players, whose presence he believes will be invaluable. "I am very pleased with the addition of the veterans who joined us late, but whose quality was crucial and facilitated their quick integration with the players," said the former international. CHAN 2024 is co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania — the first time the competition is being staged across three nations. Morocco will play their Group A fixtures in Nairobi, starting with the clash against Angola, followed by matches against Kenya, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gonçalves believes the opening match against Morocco is the ideal litmus test for his team. "This is our chance to test ourselves against one of the best. We've worked hard for this," he said. "Psychologically, we are preparing to play the best — and that's what tomorrow is about." Morocco's ambition is clear — to win the title and reinforce their status as a powerhouse of local football on the continent. Angola, meanwhile, will look to build on their upward trajectory and pull off a statement result against the defending champions. As the players take to the pitch in Nairobi, fans across Africa will be watching closely — not only to see who starts strong, but to gauge which of these two seasoned CHAN participants can turn potential into glory.

Key regulations explained for the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN, PAMOJA 2024

Published: Saturday, 02 August 2025 The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) can confirm the key regulations around the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), PAMOJA 2024 tournament when it comes to group play. The TotalEnergies CAF CHAN, PAMOJA 2024 features 19 teams, and will consist of four groups: three of them (Groups A, B, and C) will include five teams each, while Group D will have four teams. As always, ranking teams in the group stage follows a structured set of criteria. In the event of a tie between two teams: · Priority will first be given to the result of the head-to-head match between them. · Then goal-difference across all group matches is considered. · Followed by the total number of goals scored in all group games. · If teams remain level, Fair Play conduct comes into play, using a point deduction system: o 1 point for a yellow card o 3 points for two yellow cards in a match (red card) o 4 points for a direct red card o 5 points for a yellow card and a direct red card · If all else fails, a drawing of lots conducted by the Organizing Committee will determine the ranking. When more than two teams are tied, the ranking becomes more complex: · Points gained in matches among the tied teams will be considered first, followed by goal difference and goals scored within that subset of matches. · If two teams still cannot be separated after applying these criteria, the rules revert to comparing just those two teams again using the same steps. · If no clear distinction can be made, then overall group performance, through goal difference, goals scored, and fair play points, will be used before a final drawing of lots. At the end of the group phase, the top two teams from each group will progress to the Quarter-finals. These knockout matches will be paired as follows: · Winner Group A vs Second Group B · Winner Group B vs Second group A · Winner Group C vs Second Group D · Winner Group D vs Second Group C To view the fixtures and the groups, CLICK HERE.
