The inaugural edition of Khelo India Beach Games organised in May in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu was a show of mixed emotions. The elation of victories paralleled the disappointments of falling short.
During the open water swimming event, which was held under adverse weather conditions, parents were worried and were waiting on the shore for their competing children to safely return from the sea. Their concerns were drowned in the cheers of local people, volunteers and supporters for the children.
The games were held on the blue-flag certified Ghoghla Beach near Diu town. Over 1,300 athletes from 31 States and Union Territories competed in six events — beach soccer, sepak takraw, pencak silat, open water swimming, beach volleyball, and beach kabaddi. Ironically, landlocked Manipur came out as the champions by the sandy shores of Ghoghla.
Apart from the competition events, the hosts also put the U.T.'s own sporting talent on display on the final day of the games, demonstrating agility with Mallakhamb — a traditional form of gymnastics; strength with tug-of-war; and grit with boxing.
The five-day event gave mediapersons a lot to deal with as photographers often had to deal with unwanted clutter in the background while looking for the perfect frame. Others would have to rival the decibel levels of booming speakers to get across to athletes.
The natural lighting of dawns and dusks made covering the games early in the morning or late in the evening incredibly interesting, especially the events of beach kabaddi and sepak takraw, in which players were sort of flying over the sand to score points under the rising/setting sun spinning its own web.
The Games had its moments despite challenges, and the beach sports community will hope that the competition augurs well for its future.
Show of strength: Athletes in action during the beach kabaddi game. The spirit of the athletes at the Khelo India Beach Games was both fierce and joyous.
Aiming for the net: Beach soccer teams from Kerala and Maharashtra fight it out.
Sparkling start: A decorated boat during the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Beach Games on the Ghoghla Beach on the Diu Island on May 19.
Grabbing eyeballs: A player from Maharashtra sends the ball back in a beach volleyball game.
Swift strokes: Athletes participate in the 10-km open water swimming competition.
Until one wins: Two women slug it out at the Pencak Silak competition.
Champion of the water: Renukacharya Hodmani, representing Karnataka, secured the top spot in the men's category in the 10-km open water swimming contest.
Fine balance: Athletes perform Mallakhamb at the opening ceremony.
With all their might: The Kerala men's tug of war team in action during the final match.
Radiant ending: Artists turn the closing ceremony of the Games to a celebration of the Union Territory as the competitive rivalry comes to an end.

New chief Coventry says IOC will launch gender working group

Kirsty Coventry said on Thursday that the first meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board under her presidency supported her belief that 'we should protect the female category'. Coventry, who on Monday became the first woman to lead the Olympic movement, had already signalled a change of direction on the politically inflammatory and scientifically complex issue of gender. On Thursday, after an executive board meeting and also after getting together with 'just over 70' members, she said the IOC, which had previously left gender rules and testing to the governing bodies of individual sports, would go ahead with developing a policy. 'We are going to set up a working group,' she told a press conference. 'It was agreed by members that the IOC should take a leading role in this and we should be the ones to bring together the experts, bring together the international federations.' 'We understand that there will be differences depending on the sport,' she said ALSO READ | As sports embrace gender tests, Coventry and IOC may follow She said she hoped to start the working group 'within weeks' with the aim of finding 'consensus' on a policy. 'It was very clear we need to protect the female category but we need to ensure fairness but we need to do so with a scientific approach,' she said. Coventry said when she was elected that even with Games coming up in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City-Utah she had no worries about dealing with United States President Donald Trump. 'I have been dealing with, let's say, difficult men in high positions since I was 20 years old,' Coventry said in March. Since then relationships between Trump and Los Angeles have become frayed over Trump's anti-immigration policies. There have also been concerns after Cuban and Senegalese athletes were denied US visas. Coventry said she was confident that there would be no impact on the LA Olympics in 2028 'When it comes to LA there is so much goodwill at all levels of government to see that the Olympic Games are a huge success,' she said, adding that the IOC would not yield to political pressure. 'The platform will be there to ensure that our values are stuck to,' she said. 'Our values will be heard and we will be able to ensure successful games for our athletes from around the world.' Coventry said the IOC planned to set up a second working group looking at how long beforehand Olympic hosts should be named. Both LA and Brisbane in 2032, had, she pointed out, 11 years of lead time, while the French Alps were only picked as hosts of the 2030 Winter Games in 2024. 'When is the best time to award?' she asked. Coventry also said she wanted to increase IOC revenue, reduce costs, make members feel more involved in decision making and use Artificial Intelligence.

Indias Olympics Dream Jolted As New IOC President Makes A Major Announcement

New International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry has announced a halt in selection process of the Olympics host committee will now pause and review the host cities. The move is a major shocker and a blow for India that has been eyeing to secure a bid for 2026 Summer Olympics and emerges as a leading contender. Coventry stated that the decision was primarily taken because of two main reasons. Firstly, IOC members wanted more engagement in the process and secondly the next host will be awarded after significant discussion over time and would be a tough decision to take. "There was an overwhelming support from the IOC members for a pause to be done and a review of the future host election process and we will be setting up a working group to look into this," said Coventry, 41. This was her first Executive Board meeting held in Lausanne. Further Details The review represents a notable departure from Bach's previous approach, which aimed to avoid expensive bidding processes by focusing on early, behind-the-scenes agreements with preferred candidates. This method resulted in Brisbane being rapidly chosen as the host city for the 2032 Games, an unexpected decision made 11 years ahead of time—sidestepping the usual competitive bids and voting. However, it faced criticism from IOC members who felt left out of the decision-making. "We want all interested parties to be a part of this pause and reflect and of this review. I am aware of the delegation coming next weekend - that will continue. They might be the first interested party for us to ask a couple of questions and to better understand from them. There is not going to be a specific pause on that but just on the entire process," she said. Coventry explained that the new direction responds to increasing calls from IOC members for more transparency and involvement. Her presidency began recently with private meetings that included over 70 IOC members in Lausanne, according to AP news agency. India Eyes 20236 India submitted a Letter of Intent to IOC in October in 2024 and will also be sending a senior delegation to Lausanne next week. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been talking about India's bid to host the Olympics in his public rallies. "We are pushing for hosting rights of 2036 Olympics, it will take Indian sports to new height. Wherever Olympics happen, all sectors gain. It creates better facilities for athletes," he said.
