Highs and lows of 2025 Super Bowl ads: Aliens, AI, America and Afflecks

Chicago Tribune10-02-2025
The Super Bowl, America's debutante ball of capitalism, is the only time of the year we willingly pay attention to ads anymore. The irony is rich: Just as sci-fi once promised, advertising jockeys for your eyeballs from every nook and cranny of daily life in 2025, yet the distraction economy also means that you turn away faster than ever to something else.
But not during a Super Bowl. For three hours or so, Totino's Pizza Rolls could potentially stop you in your tracks. Nestle Coffee might even possibly have you humming jingles again. Think of it that way, and the $7 or $8 million that a Super Bowl spot costs this year — not including the additional $3 or $5 million paid per celebrity cameo — almost seems worth it.
Our good old monoculture lives, however briefly.
That said, what did everyone think of this year's batch of Super ads? It's the only TV that everyone will watch together for the next 12 months — or at least 120 million of us. No movie or TV series will come close. Here's what I saw from my corner of the couch …
Fumbles
AI loves you: Aliens and flying facial hair were trending topics of this year's commercials. But the low-key diva was that sweet, harmless AI scamp. Chat GPT. Google Gemini. Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses. The latter enlisted Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth to pretend they don't get contemporary art. Despite wearing Meta glasses? Or because of their Meta glasses? Who knows? Art's dumb! Worse was the Google Gemini ad, which gave us a heartwarming vision of an ordinary father who, well, spends his day discussing employment advice with an AI bot?
Cold comfort: Antonio Banderas selling Bosch refrigerators is innocuous enough. Until they bring in … WWF's Randy 'Macho Man' Savage? Actually, an impersonator. Savage died in 2011. (If anyone can explain what I'm missing about that, feel free to email.)
When Harry Met Sally and Ordered Hellmann's: Am I the only one confused? Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan reunite at Katz's Deli and — ask for mayo? Katz's, an old school New York pastrami-and-corned beef paradise, does indeed serve mayo. Still, it's like an ad for ketchup shot at Weiners Circle.
Wide of the Mark
This is America: Personally, I wish there were more ads for social issues during Super Bowls. That way, you'd get something more interesting than earnest sentiment. Nike's elegant black-and-white spot with Jordan Chiles and Caitlin Clark and a host of women sports stars nailed the contradictory messaging lobbed at women — the kind that says shoot high, just not that high. But an ad from the NFL espousing DEI ('I must be respected, protected, never rejected') during the same game in which they removed 'End Racism' from the stadium's end zones? Or a spot with Tom Brady and Snoop Dogg about really hating the climate of hate, paid for by Robert Kraft's Foundation to Combat Antisemitism — all of whom have been Trump supporters?
If You Know, You Know: Well, someone at website builder Squarespace is fancy. Last year, they hired no less than Martin Scorsese to make their Super Bowl spot (and star in it). This year, it's a handsome, gentle and pretty random ode to the lovely Irish drama 'Banshees of Inisherin,' featuring star Barry Keoghan tossing laptops through pub windows then riding his donkey over a cliff. David Lynch is dead. Long live David Lynch.
Punts
Moldy Oldies: Give it up for Bolingbrook's WeatherTech having the ambition to advertise every year during the Super Bowl. They sell floor mats for cars. Still, when you're that left field, why pair a car full of elderly women with 'Born to Be Wild?' Yawn.
Zero Taste: According to commercial tracking firm iSpot, one-third of Super Bowl ads contained celebrities. Somehow, it felt like more. Michelob Ultra's pickleball spot was about how fun it is to look at Willem Dafoe and Catherine O'Hara play WNBA (Sabrina Ionescu) and NFL stars (Randy Moss) — and that's it. Clever folks given nothing to do.
Awww … kward: A young Clydesdale pushes a keg over mountains and through fields just to return some missing Bud? The Hallmark Christmas Movie of beer commercials.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Nightmare Fuel: Granted, if I pounded a few Mountain Dew Baja Blasts and (eventually, someday) fell asleep, I too might eventually imagine myself on a boat running into something as disturbing as the body of a seal graphed to the head of Seal.
Hail Marys
Wilmette Calling: For Yahoo's first Super Bowl ad in two decades, they enlisted Bill Murray, looking expectedly disheveled, to do something unexpected: 'I don't think I need professional help. But a skilled amateur … Maybe? Little help?' Then he shows his email address: Billhimself@yahoo.com. Yes, it's an actual address. The mystery is why. The thing is, to figure it out, you're going to have to use Yahoo for the first time in years.
Making a Better Movie Trailer: If you want to see the new 'Fantastic Four' or 'Jurassic Park' trailer, you'll see it. Which is why it's so refreshing to get a photorealistic Stitch (star of the next unnecessary live-action Disney remake) disrupting a football game. Or Tom Cruise, lightly slipping a 'Mission: Impossible' plug into a rousing pregame montage. Neither delivered footage of an upcoming movie, instead something more compelling: A sensibility distilled.
IP Assemble! As a commercial for a grocery delivery service, Instacart barely left room to explain what it does. As a trailer for a sort of 'Avengers: Mascot Endgame' — with cameos by Cheetos' cheetah, Jolly Green Giant, Mr. Clean, Energizer Bunny and others — it was an impressive feat of cross-corporate intellectual-property lawyering.
Touchdowns
Bean Town: The plot: Preppy snobs get undermined by, cough, working-class Affleck brothers and Dunkin'. Like New England itself (the team and the region), you love this or hate it. As a native, I'm a sucker for Ben's agita and Casey's wariness ('It's beans and water'). Then Jeremy 'serious method actor' Strong emerges from a vat of coffee grinds, bringing a conceptual Huh? to already nonsensical Wha? Guess I just admire the commitment. (There's a six-and-a-half-minute online cut that's crazier and makes even less sense.)
Sketchy Celebs: Ritz had a nice idea and didn't overdo it: Aubrey Plaza and Michael Shannon would pair well together because both are 'salty.' Good call. Both get a sharp one-liner: 'When I smile, people assume it's a glitch.' Plaza laments that she's a human Monday. Bad Bunny shows up for an unnecessary bonus. Slight, speedy and funny.
E.T. Phone 911: Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson of Second City and 'I Think You Should Leave' fit their talent for unsettling laughs into a Totino's ad that plays just like a parody of a Totino's ad. An alien says bye only to get squashed in the doors of his UFO. Children scream. Tim and Sam are sorry for him, but they didn't know him that well, so …
Awww … shucks: What a sweet, short and easygoing message. Roger Federer chats with Elmo, who wonders what the 'Q' and 'C' on Federer's tennis shoes mean. No, Federer says, it's an 'O' and an 'N.' As in On sneakers. Elmo looks doubtful. Me too, Elmo. But what a smart way of subverting the big drawback to a confusing brand name.
Thanks, Elmo. The more you know.

NFL QB rankings: Where every team's 2025 starter lands based on aura

NFL quarterbacks have been ranked by stats, accomplishments, fantasy scores and more, but it's about time we talk about the thing that truly matters – aura. It's something that can't be measured by numbers, but as the late Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said about obscenity, "I know it when I see it." While some hit the film room, others spend their time on the aura farm – crafting some of the most ridiculous personas you've ever seen. There's no MVP award or Super Bowl ring for this honor, but maybe there should be. Without further ado, here are the official aura rankings for the 2025 NFL season's starting quarterbacks. DangeRuss. Mr. Unlimited. Plane workouts. Wannabe NYC influencer. Please, make it stop. Mr. Irrelevant is an appropriate nickname for Purdy off-the-field. Boring is better than cringy though and that allows the NFL-equivalent of the "9 to 5" influencer to avoid the last spot. He has a cool name, but it also signifies a call of distress. Patriots fans hope that won't be used unironically this year, but there is no real swagger or aura about Maye. The hairstyle is improved, but the skill level is a mystery. McCarthy gets an incomplete and lands near the back of the ranking until proven otherwise. A-Rich could have maximum aura. Instead he was too tired to show up for his team in a big moment and we're too tired to boost his ranking. A real shame for someone with such promise. Left handed QBs just look unnatural. The lack of personality on display makes it even worse. He comes across as someone that is trying too hard. The play style feels clunky and every throw looks like a fadeaway jumper. Love has to expand his bag in 2025. Against all odds, the fairly bland Darnold kept his career alive after a breakout 2024. It'll require a lot more effort to get rid of this guy – probably more ghosts, if we had to guess. Flacco has been around long enough to be cool again. In the league since 2008, he has the "get off my lawn" energy, but in a good way. He's short and far from flashy, but Young was aura farming to the max in the second half of 2024. Big things could be on the way. The soon-to-be 26-year-old rookie could've thrown the towel and went into corporate America after a career in college. His quest to be an outlier is applauded here. Concussions have made him the NFL version of the old dog at the shelter. You just can't help but feel bad about what has happened. The hair is doing the heavy lifting, but he could be a lot more exciting. In his defense, Jacksonville and the Jaguars aren't exactly oozing with aura though. Nix dragged the Broncos out of irrelevancy as a rookie and has a cool name. There's some untapped aura for him to uncover as an encore this season. Stafford is the more talented version of Flacco here. Accomplished, talented and still playing a kid's game for a living at 37. Say less. Quarterback or video game streamer? Murray can make some magic on the field, but he struggles to shake the label of someone that would rather be live on Twitch playing Call of Duty. The uncontrollable tears aren't helping Williams in what would've otherwise been a strong case of above average aura in the NFL. He beats to his own drum, but life isn't fair and the QB needs to realize that. One of the game's greatest QBs, Rodgers is now off the deep end. Those clashing realities make the middle a perfect spot. No aura on an individual level, but Goff has the city wrapped around his finger. Listen closely and you'll hear people chanting his name for no reason in a supermarket parking lot. A great QB with endless gifts from above helps his rating. The flopping is unbecoming and the complaining is even worse. Be better. If it looks like a great QB and moves like a great QB, then it must be a great QB. Fields is evidence that results may vary, but there's no denying his aura. He made football in the nation's capital cool again, but his mom can't be controlling his dating life forever and the rating takes a hit because of it. At some point, you have to sink or swim on your own. Being the starting quarterback for America's Team gives Prescott a ton of aura by default. A silent assassin that couldn't possibly be more nonchalant. Ward is all action, no talk. Herbert has mastered the look, even though the short hair does him no justice. He's a little too reserved for our liking, limiting his ceiling here. Everything says his career should be over, but it isn't. King of one-liners, the haters are still waiting for him to write back. A bit of a loose cannon, Mayfield has embraced his inner Florida man with his fiery personality and unlimited confidence. He's a QB with aura that has some serious gravitational pull. The best quarterback in the sport is one you don't want to play against. A combination of dad mode, Kermit voice and a family that creates unwanted headlines holds him back. Stroud is dripping with swagger that borders on arrogance and has almost single-handedly made the Texans a cool team. There's no denying his aura, or his talent. He has the smile and the charisma, but being a "tush push" merchant and speaking in clichés can only get you so far. A real contender for the top spot, Jackson is hurt by his playoff struggles. You can't be No. 1 if you struggle when it matters most. Swagger. Fashion. Confidence. Talent. In the aura department, Burrow whas hat everyone wants. Unless you want wins, then we'll have to transfer you.

What parents need to know about ‘The Fantastic Four,' ‘Ballard' and more

Age 11+ Marvel's First Family gets a retro, action-packed reboot. This Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure unfolds in an alternate version of Earth that resembles the 1960s. It follows superheroes Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they work together to protect their world from extraterrestrial forces. Expect frequent comic book-style action and large-scale destruction. Violence include battles with superpowers (fire, force fields, super strength), high-speed pursuits, collapsing buildings and intense suspense (such as a baby in danger). While there's little blood or on-screen death, one planet's destruction implies mass casualties. An affectionate married couple kisses and holds hands, and there's a mildly suggestive joke about pregnancy. Characters briefly drink what appears to be beer. Language includes infrequent use of 'bulls---,' 'sweet Jesus' and 'God.' Positive themes include teamwork, perseverance, unconditional familial love and using your abilities to protect others. (118 minutes) Available in theaters. Age 15+ Broody detective spin-off has cursing, violence and sex. Starring Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, this 'Bosch' spin-off explores mature topics such as murder, sexism, sexual assault and police corruption. There's lots of violent content: shootings, physical altercations, images of corpses and more. There are also suggested sexual acts and bare bottoms, and you can expect to hear words such as 'f---,' 's---,' 'b----' and 'goddamn.' Characters occasionally drink beer and discuss drug use (usually within the context of criminal activity). (10 episodes) Available on Prime Video. Age 8+ Branded stop-motion story looks sweet but has dark twists. This stop-motion animated series is based on characters from the Japanese brand Sanrio. While it may come across as cute and fluffy, the story gradually gets darker as characters with glowing eyes act possessed, chase the protagonists and even eat a character made out of cotton candy. There's no gore or blood, but the lighting and sound effects might distress younger viewers. For kids who can handle fantasy horror or are used to dense anime plots, this one is full of mystery and complexities. The series arrives at a positive message about kindness and friendship, but there's plenty of negativity in the road there. My Melody (voiced by Junko Takeuchi) is a role model of kindness, caring and positivity. Kuromi (Rei Sakuma), on the other hand, wants to compete and acts out in rage by yelling, growling and mistreating others. (12 episodes) Available on Netflix. Age 3+ Simple preschool stories star Mickey and pals. Targeted toward preschoolers, this is a colorful reboot of the animated 'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse' educational series that aired from 2006 to 2016. Featuring Mickey (voiced by Bret Iwan), Minnie (Kaitlin Robrock), Donald (Tony Anselmo) and other classic Disney characters, this simple series finds the crew modeling teamwork as they solve problems and learn together. Expect mildly scary excitement — like Mickey being whisked away by a hot-air balloon — that's quickly resolved. Otherwise, there's no iffy content. (10 episodes) Available on Disney Jr. and Disney+. Common Sense Media helps families make smart media choices. Go to for age-based and educational ratings and reviews for movies, games, apps, TV shows, websites and books.

Kim Kardashian Reportedly Left Feeling 'Embarrassed And Bitter' After Tom Brady Rejected Her At A Wedding

Kim Kardashian has reportedly been trying to re-enter the dating world; however, she won't be hard-launching a relationship with Tom Brady anytime soon. According to a new source, Kim Kardashian is reportedly reeling after being rejected by Tom Brady, who was recently spotted with actress Sofia Vergara. Kim Kardashian Reportedly 'Embarrassed And Bitter' After Being Rejected By NFL Legend Tom Brady A source told RadarOnline that Kim, who had been linked to Brady in May 2023 after reportedly searching for a vacation home near Brady's in the Bahamas, has been in a bad headspace after reportedly being overlooked by the Super Bowl champion. Insiders revealed that Kim had hoped to reconnect with Brady at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's recent wedding; however, things didn't go according to plan. The source told the outlet that "Kim wasn't exactly subtle about liking Tom," confirming the pair have "had flirty moments and plenty of run-ins," leading Kim to believe "something might eventually happen." His recent outing with Vergara, though, "stung" her. Kim Kardashian Has Reportedly Had A 'Massive Blow' To Her Self-Esteem After Tom Brady Connected With Someone Else The outlet also noted that the source said being rejected by Brady has "been a massive blow" to Kim's "self-esteem." "Tom checked all her boxes — he's polished, high-profile, and attractive. She really thought he could be the one, so watching him pursue someone else hit a nerve," the source added. Vergara and Brady first sparked romance rumors in July 2025 after the NFL star reportedly requested to be seated next to her on a superyacht. 'Tom went out of his way to sit next to Sofia — the spark was there right away. Things moved quickly between them, and it turned into a fun summer fling. The timing couldn't have worked out better for her," a source told RadarOnline. Source Says Kim Kardashian Is 'Lonely' After Tom Brady Rejection Regarding Kim's dating life, the "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star has been single since ending her relationship with football player Odell Beckham Jr. The pair were an item for six months, dating from September 2023 to March 2024. According to an insider, "Kim is basically sad and lonely" and "really struggling." "Since Kanye, it's been one disappointment after another," they continued. 'She feels like she gave her best years to someone who didn't appreciate her, and now she's up against younger women—or women like Sofia who are getting the men Kim wants." The source added that the reality star is "quietly hoping Tom and Sofia don't last," considering the pair "becoming serious is way more humiliating for her." 'On the outside, she's putting on a brave face, but inside, it's tough," they concluded. Someone Close To Brady Denied His 'Summer Romance' With Vergara However, a recent report from The Blast stated that despite the chatter regarding his "summer romance" with Vergara, the former quarterback remains a single man. "Tom loves being single and is enjoying his summer before he starts working again, and he is not looking for a relationship," a source said about Brady, later adding that the NFL analyst has "options." "He's not looking to be settled down right now. He wants to just have fun. Flings and hookups are cool, but if anyone thinks they can have more with him right now, good luck!" the source said. Is There A Reason Brady May Not Be Interested In Pursuing Anything Further With Vergara? Beyond that, the source also shared that a relationship with Brady and Vergara wouldn't have worked because the elite athlete found the "Modern Family" actress "stuck in her ways." They also claimed Brady "could only take her in small doses." "Sofia's Colombian heritage is sexy, and hanging out with her and other sexy people on a yacht can be intoxicating, but Tom is not going to bring his work home with him if you catch my drift," the source shared. "If Sofia has any thought that she is going to be in a relationship with Tom, she would be the only one with that thought... nobody should start thinking of celebrity relationship names for them because it is not something that is going to happen."
