Katie McCabe praises Renee Slegers' honesty after Arsenal's European success
McCabe, who has spent a decade with the Gunners, was welcomed back to international camp by a guard of honour to celebrate Arsenal's European triumph over Barcelona, the first time an English side had lifted the trophy in 18 years.
'With Renee, that relationship and the direct line of communication from player to manager is so important to her,' McCabe told the PA news agency.'You'll have to ask her why that is, but in my opinion, I think it's because she's been a player before, she understands how it is sometimes, maybe if you're going through a rough patch, or maybe on the other end you're flying with confidence, but she gets that.
'She makes time for us, which is really important, and we massively respect her for that.'
Former midfielder Slegers, who split her senior career between the Netherlands and Sweden, took charge of Arsenal on an interim basis in October before being appointed full time in January.
Slegers reportedly holds open-floor meetings where players are encouraged to set the agenda.
And while she is very much the boss, unafraid to make difficult decisions, Slegers was equally at ease letting loose with her players in front of the thousands who gathered to greet the team outside the Emirates Stadium.
'She's obviously an ex player, so that's one aspect to (her success),' McCabe said.
'I think the calmness she has, the directness in what she wants, but also the way she is able to instill belief in the team and the players, whether you are in the starting 11 or you've come on to make an impact, it's all about the team for her.
'Not just the players, but the staff as well.'

'I haven't had that moment yet,' she added. 'I feel like there's been little moments over the last few days, and when I got my mum and dad down on the pitch after and you're kind of stood there with the trophy in your hand, that was a moment I was really proud of.
'They've sacrificed a lot and it's not easy juggling 11 kids and trying to drive me all over the country.
'I'm sure I'll have loads of moments coming up over the next few weeks, but the win absolutely topped off an incredible year.'
Cadbury Ambassador Katie McCabe is calling for the nation to nominate a local Game Changer for a chance to win a surprise visit from a Cadbury Ambassador. To find nominate head to @cadburyuk on Instagram.

Liverpool willing to let three more stars leave as summer transfer overhaul continues
Liverpool are making big moves in the transfer market after embarking on a huge summer spree, while also letting Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz leave the club - and there could be more outgoings Liverpool could let three youngsters leave the club this summer as Luca Stephenson, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas gain interest from a number of teams. The Reds have been one of the most active clubs in the transfer window after spending nearly £300million on high profile stars like Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. There have also been a handful of outgoings after the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid for £10m and Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for around £63.5m. And the Premier League champions are open to sanctioning more exits for some young players as manager Arne Slot continues to overhaul his squad to keep it in fighting contention for the Premier League title once again. Stephenson has featured in pre-season under Slot and has impressed Slot after being included in the pre-season tour to Asia, but he has interest from Dundee United , Swansea, Reading, Rotherham and Cardiff over a loan move. Aberdeen are also fans of the 21-year-old and are considering a permanent transfer, according to the Liverpool Echo. Meanwhile, McConnell is attracting interest from West Brom, Ipswich, Derby, Oxford, Swansea and French side Metz after impressing for Liverpool in cup competitions in recent years - having caught the eye while starting for the team in a Champions League clash against PSV last season. And Koumas is another player who could be on the move as Norwich, Sheffield United, Hull, Preston, Birmingham and Wrexham all monitor the player. Koumas - who has already made his international debut for Wales - scored on his Liverpool debut in the FA Cup last year during a 3-0 win over Southampton and scored six times on loan with Stoke last season. There has even been an approach from La Liga giants Sevilla over Koumas' signature, with the Spanish club looking to rebuild after a relegation battle in 2024-25. It comes as Liverpool work on securing a massive deal for Alexander Isak after seeing a £120m bid rejected by Newcastle. Isak has already told the Magpies he wants to consider his options this summer and has refused to travel with the team for their pre-season tour in Asia - with manager Eddie Howe admitting the situation is "not in my control".

Aaron Ramsdale speaks out on what made him want Newcastle move
Aaron Ramsdale has completed his loan move from Southampton to Newcastle, pointing out three reasons behind his motivation to move to St James' Park. The 27-year-old spent just one year with the Saints after signing from Arsenal and it was not a great season as Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League table. The England international's reputation remained intact, though, and he is straight back into the top flight. The Magpies have brought in the goalkeeper on a season-long loan with an option to buy next summer and he expects that will be taken up as he says he will be with the club for the 'foreseeable future'. There were multiple reasons that Ramsdale was attracted to Newcastle, firstly mentioning St James' Park itself, where he has played many times before. Speaking on his unveiling as a Newcastle player, he said: 'It's great to be here. I've always loved coming here and I've seen how passionate and loud the fans can be. I've always loved playing here at St. James' Park – I've not always had the greatest of results, but when the fans get behind you it's some place.' The Magpies finished fifth last season, returning to the Champions League as a result and the chance to play at Europe's top table again was obviously also an attraction for the stopper. 'Coming to the stadium and seeing it empty today, it's quite surreal to think that this is going to be home for the foreseeable future,' he said. 'I've got the kit on, it's got the nice Champions League badge on the sleeve and I'm delighted to be here.' Another great appeal for Ramsdale is getting to work with manager Eddie Howe again after their time together at Bournemouth. The goalkeeper enjoyed his Premier League breakthrough with the Cherries, making 37 top flight appearances under Howe in the 2019/20 season. 'Working with the manager and his coaching staff again were a big draw for me,' he said. 'They've already had a great influence on my career and the gaffer turned me from a man into a professional footballer at Bournemouth. He really showed me the ropes so the manager and his coaching staff were a huge selling point for me to come here.' More Trending Newcastle already have Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in their ranks and it is not entirely clear which goalkeeper will be first choice when the season gets underway later this month. Appearances: 183 Clean sheets: 41 Saves made: 595 Goals conceded: 278 Speaking of his new signing, Howe said: 'Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper who adds further quality and international experience to our squad. 'Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group.' The Magpies get their Premier League campaign underway away at Aston Villa on Saturday August 16.
