2-time defending champion Jessica Pegula upset by Sevastova in 3rd round in Montreal
Sevastova, a 35-year-old from Latvia who was ranked 11th in 2018 but has fallen to 386th, broke the third-seeded Pegula six times on 10 chances.
'Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better,' Sevastova said. 'Third set, I played really good. 'Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible.'
In the night session, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek of Poland routed Eva Lys of Germany 6-2, 6-2. The second-seeded Swiatek advanced to face 16th-seeded Clara Tauson of Denmark, a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva.
'It's always fun here,' Swiatek said. 'It was a solid match so I'm happy to have a chance to play another one here. The match was different from how we played each other last time. I just focused on myself and knew what my plan was.'
Sevastova has played 24 WTA Tour-level matches in four years. She got a spot in the main draw with a protected ranking because of a knee injury. In March 2024, in her fourth tournament back from maternity leave, she tore her ACL at the ATX Open.
'It's tough, but I think I'm a fighter, also on court,' Sevastova said. 'I didn't want to give up. This was really about coming back and showing that you can do it after a torn ACL, after such a setback. It was like unfinished business.'
Sevastova is the lowest-ranked player to beat a top-10 player since Angelique Kerber edged Jelena Ostapenko last year at Indian Wells.
The loss continued a poor run for the fourth-ranked Pegula, who won her opener in Montreal over Maria Sakkari of Greece, but exited Wimbledon and the D.C. Open after one match in July.
'It hasn't been great, to be honest,' Pegula said. 'I don't really feel like I'm playing great tennis. At times I am, but I feel very up and down, kind of sloppy, which I don't like. It really bothers me.'
Sevastova will take on Naomi Osaka, who moved to the fourth round with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
Osaka, a former No. 1-ranked player from Japan, is playing her first tournament with coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, She had five aces and converted 6 of 9 break-point opportunities to win the match in 1 hour, 12 minutes.
'She broke me a couple times, but she's a really good returner, so I can't take that personally,' Osaka said. 'I went in there knowing she's a great player, and if I give her a chance she's going to hit a winner on me, so I just tried to keep my pace and stay as solid as I could.'
Fifth-seeded Amanda Anisimova of the United States routed Emma Raducanu of England 6-2, 6-1 at night. Anisimova will play 10th-seeded Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Anna Kalinskaya of Russia in the late match.
Sixth-seeded Madison Keys beat fellow American Caty McNally 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
'Today I did a good job of bouncing back after the first set,' Keys said. 'Let go of the first set and move on. Happy I was able to do that.'

Now, the NFL doesn't even view other American sports as competition. A recent email regarding Ken Belson's upcoming book — EVERY DAY IS SUNDAY: How Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, and Roger Goodell Turned the NFL into a Cultural & Economic Juggernaut — shares a quote Commissioner Roger Goodell private made in the aftermath of Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. 'We're not competing with the NBA or MLB,' Goodell said. 'Our competitors are Apple and Google.' He's right, even if the NFL is doing business with Google and could soon be doing business with Apple. The NFL keeps growing. Its influence expands to business beyond football. It's the one thing that can consistently attract millions to watch an event live, from the significant (like the Super Bowl) to the trivial (like the Hall of Fame game). Even the draft, which could be done via group text, has been shaped into must-see TV and a live event that draws hundreds of thousands to witness, well, not much of anything. Regardless of where the NFL goes from here, it has left other American sports in the dust. And, yes, it is targeting much bigger fish. There's another competitor that Goodell didn't mention. On the surface, it seems ridiculous to even discuss. But the NFL surely hopes to chase, and to catch, soccer. Yes, it's ridiculous. At least as ridiculous as it would have been to suggest that pro football will catch Major League Baseball in the '30s, '40s, and '50s.

Injuries to key players dampen excitement for WNBA's inaugural Rivals Week
NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA hoped to create some buzz with its inaugural Rivals Week, which is slated to begin on Saturday. Unfortunately, injuries to key players like Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has dampened some of the excitement. The week was set to tip-off with a primetime matchup between Clark's Fever and Reese's Sky on Saturday night. Clark is definitely out while still recovering from a groin strain that's sidelined her already for a few weeks. Reese has missed four of the past five games with a back injury. Collier and Stewart were set for a second meeting between Minnesota and New York on Sunday, but neither will play in the game. Collier is sidelined with a sprained right ankle and Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee. The two teams played an epic WNBA Finals last season, although both sides have downplayed it being a rivalry just yet. 'It's a rivalry because of what happened in the Finals last year and I think it's good that it has people talking,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. 'We have passionate fans. We have people talking about our league and that's a good thing.' Right now only four games separate second-place New York (18-10) from eighth place Golden State (14-14) with a month left in the season. 'The timing of that week is critical, because in August you start to really make that playoff push,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said back when the Rivals Week was announced. 'So it would be great to have those matchups during that period to drive that playoff push into September and crown a champion in October.' Power poll rankings Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta and New York behind the Lynx. Riding a five-game winning streak, Indiana moved up to fourth. Phoenix and Seattle followed the Fever. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Golden State were the next three. Washington, Dallas, Connecticut and Chicago rounded out the poll. It's the first time since Week 6 that the Sun aren't at the bottom of the poll. Ratings boon Las Vegas' blowout loss to Minnesota on Saturday drew an average viewership of 1.6 million fans, peaking at 2 million. As a whole, games on ABC are up 20% from the regular season last year on the network. Player of the week Collier of Minnesota was the AP player of the week after averaging 24 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists to help the Lynx win both their games last week. Other players receiving votes included Allisha Gray of Atlanta, Natasha Howard of Indiana and Sabrina Ionescu of New York. Game of the week Minnesota at New York, Sunday. With Stewart and Collier both missing this game a little of the luster has come out of it. Still, it's a WNBA Finals rematch and there's definitely a little extra on this game.
