Cyber police arrest two men for financial fraud using fake Parivahan app

Kochi: Kochi city cyber police arrested two men from Varanasi who were involved in a nationwide online fraud through a fake Parivahan application. The accused defrauded several people by sending fake APK files via WhatsApp and convincing them that the application was for paying vehicle fines. Police identified the arrested persons as Uttar Pradesh natives Atul Kumar Singh, 32, and Manish Yadav, 24. According to police, the accused collected vehicle information through a Telegram bot. A 16-year-old relative of Manish Yadav was the mastermind behind creating the fake application. His arrest was not recorded and a notice was issued against his name, police said. They were arrested following an investigation into a complaint registered on the NCRP portal by an Ernakulam resident stating that he lost Rs 85,000 through the fake Parivahan link. Based on this complaint, the Kochi cyber police filed an FIR and an investigation team, including inspector Shameer Khan and officers Arun, Ajith Raj, Nikhil George, Alfit Andrews and Sharafuddin, apprehended the suspects using digital evidence. Police recovered information on over 2,700 vehicles from Kerala, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal from the phones of the accused. Nearly 500 complaints about the challan scam have been reported from across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Shop Sale Libas Undo "The accused were non-cooperative, making it difficult to execute the arrest. We are en route with the accused and will arrive in Kochi on Monday. The accused were involved in other modes of crimes as well," said an officer with the probe team. He added that the accused generated other such APK files as well. "They also used APK files to cheat people by making them believe that the app was updating KYC details on various platforms. Another mode of scam was to send fake APK files for applications for sex chat. In such cases, the victims were not even reporting the crime due to shame," said an officer. Police said that if the public notices such online financial crimes, they should immediately contact the cyber police via toll-free number 1930 or through the website

Ex-sarpanch acquitted in POCSO case

Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has acquitted a former sarpanch who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024 under the POCSO Act for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl, ruling that the case appeared to have been fabricated by a political rival. Babu Singh Lodhi, in his appeal against a sessions court order, said the medical report of the girl was negative, and his political rival Rajendra Singh was the one who lodged an FIR against him. During hearing of the petition, a bench of justices Vivek Agarwal and AK Singh found that both Lodhi and Rajendra Singh had been sarpanch of Patharia in Damoh district, and they were political rivals. The girl's mother admitted in the court that Rajendra Singh was the one who took them to the police station to lodge the complaint. The minor girl also told the court that she had told Rajendra Singh about the incident first. She had gone to school after the incident and Rajendra Singh, who used to visit her home, brought her back from the school. After coming back home, she took a bath and then went to the police station to lodge the report with Rajendra Singh. The medical report of the girl was also negative. In view of the circumstances of the case, the court set aside the order of the trial court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has acquitted a former sarpanch who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024 under the POCSO Act for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl, ruling that the case appeared to have been fabricated by a political rival. Police across states, UTs classify all road deaths as ‘hit-and-run' cases

File photo NEW DELHI: The Punjab Police catching the driver involved in marathon runner Fauja Singh's death case within days has kicked off a debate why police across states can't nab absconding drivers, instead classifying these cases as 'hit and run' and making no headway in them. Analysis of the NCRB data of 2022 (the latest published report) show that in 125 police districts, 100% of all deaths due to 'negligence relating to road accidents' causing deaths were put under the 'hit and run' category. This trend was across most of the states and UTs, including two police districts in Delhi, NCR cities of Ghaziabad and Meerut, Dehradun, Nainital, Mathura, Agra, Gwalior, Ujjain, Jodhpur, Bokaro, Jalandhar Rural and Nagpur police commissionerate, raising questions over the quality of data and reports that police put in file in case of road accidents. Road fatalities in 2022 Traffic safety experts and former senior police officers told TOI that it's high time govt reviews how data in road crashes and deaths are collected and their sanctity. 'It's simply not possible that all deaths due to negligent driving are hit and run cases. In almost all states it's the junior most person officially records road accidents and writes the FIR. The mechanism to audit the data before sending to the NCRB or publishing is weak. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Such reports hardly serve any purpose,' said a former senior Delhi police officer. On the most probable reason for recording most cases as hit and run, an expert said once such a case is registered and concluded weeks after the incident, police hardly carry out an added that in several cases, both parties also reach a compromise and the victims' kin get the compensation from govt rather than pursuing the case. The data published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) show that nearly 85% of all 384 road deaths due to negligence (section 304A of earlier IPC) in Uttarakhand were recorded as hit and run. In the case of Uttar Pradesh, this was recorded as the reason in 16,343 road fatalities out of 20,109 death cases that police registered under earlier IPC section. Out of its 78 police districts, 47 had reported all road fatalities under hit and run. It was no different even in the case of Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand where more than 55% of road deaths registered under 304A of IPC were due to negligent driving. While in MP, 15 police districts had all deaths registered under hit and run, in the case of Jharkhand there were eight such police districts. However, there were some exceptions as well. States such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal where no police district recorded all road crash deaths as hit and run cases, as per NCRB.
