Trump says he will start talks with China on TikTok deal

Miami Heralda day ago
President Donald Trump late Friday said that the United States 'pretty much has a deal' for an American company to acquire the U.S. branch of TikTok, adding that he intended to restart talks next week with China to approve the deal.
'We're going to start Monday or Tuesday talking to China,' Trump told reporters traveling on Air Force One on Friday night as it headed to Bedminster, New Jersey. 'We think we probably have to get it approved by China. Not definitely, but probably.'
He added, 'I think the deal is good for China, and it's good for us. It's money, it's a lot of money.'
Trump did not say who the potential buyer was. The president said earlier in the week that he had found a buyer for the U.S. branch of TikTok, the popular Chinese-owned video app that faces a ban adopted by Congress over national security concerns. A 2024 law required that the app effectively be banned in the United States unless its parent company, ByteDance, sold it to a non-Chinese company. Congress was concerned that sensitive user data could end up in the hands of the Chinese government.
It was not clear if the deal would comply with some of the requirements Congress adopted for a sale of TikTok, particularly if ByteDance chose not to share the app's algorithm with the U.S. buyers. Private equity firms have been hesitant to invest in a deal without some form of indemnification.
Trump has declined to enforce the law banning the app, which was passed by large bipartisan majorities and unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court. Shortly after being sworn in, Trump issued an executive order directing the Justice Department to suspend enforcement of the TikTok ban and has since repeatedly extended it. Attorney General Pam Bondi has told tech companies that Trump has the constitutional power to effectively set aside laws.

Israel and Hamas are inching toward a new ceasefire deal for Gaza. This is how it might look

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Washington Monday to meet U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for a ceasefire that might lead to an end to the 21-month war in Gaza. Israel and Hamas are considering a new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal that would pause the war, free Israeli hostages and send much-needed aid flooding into Gaza. It also aims to open broader talks about ending the conflict. Negotiations have repeatedly stalled over Hamas' demands for an end to the war and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israel wants Hamas to surrender and disarm before it ends the war. While the final details have yet to be agreed to by the sides, The Associated Press obtained a copy of the proposal sent by mediators to Hamas. Here is a look at how the truce might look, according to that draft: — The truce would last 60 days. — 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 would be released in phases throughout the truce. — Palestinian prisoners held by Israel will be released in exchange for the hostages, although precise numbers were not detailed. — Humanitarian aid entering Gaza would be ramped up significantly and would be distributed by the United Nations. The proposal makes no mention of the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. — Israeli forces would withdraw to a buffer zone along Gaza's borders with Israel and Egypt. Israel has seized large swaths of the territory since ending a previous ceasefire in March. — On the first day of the truce, the sides are expected to begin negotiations toward an end to the war, but no timeline is mentioned. — The mediators — the U.S., Egypt and Qatar — will serve as guarantors to make sure the sides negotiate in good faith. — While there is no guarantee the war would end, the proposal states that Trump insists the talks during the truce 'would lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict.' — If the negotiations toward ending the war are not complete after 60 days, the ceasefire may be extended. — The proposal says Trump will personally announce the ceasefire deal once it is reached. ___ Follow news of the war: Error! Musk Mentions ‘Epstein List' Again After Trump Mocks His America Party

Elon Musk on Monday took an apparent jab at President Donald Trump—posting on X about the inconsistent White House claims about a so-called 'Epstein list'—after the president mocked the billionaire's announcement of a new political party, as the feud between the two former allies is apparently back on. The feud between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump continued to escalate after Musk ... More announced the formation of his own America Party. Getty Images In a post on X, Musk shared a meme that seems to call out the Trump administration over its failure to release a purported list of powerful clients kept by disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Musk's post is likely a response to an Axios report, which cited a Justice Department and FBI investigation report that found no evidence of Epstein maintaining such a list and using it to blackmail influential figures. Musk also responded to a post from another X account that contrasted the Axios report with an older news headline that cited Attorney General Pam Bondi saying the Epstein list was on her desk. When the feud between Musk and Trump first broke out last month, the billionaire alleged without evidence the White House had not released the Epstein list because Trump's name was on it. Musk has since deleted that post and the feud briefly thawed last month, with the billionaire expressing regret for his remarks. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said he was 'saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks.' The president said a third political party has 'never succeeded in the United States' and claimed the U.S. political system was 'not designed for them.' Trump said third parties were only good for creating 'Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS.' Before he flew from Bedminster, New Jersey, to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Trump told reporters Musk's third-party idea was 'ridiculous.' The president added that U.S. politics have 'always been a two-party system, and starting a third party just adds to confusion…so he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous.' What Do We Know About The America Party? Musk mentioned the idea of an 'America Party' last week as he assailed Trump's signature spending bill in a series of posts on X. The billionaire had tweeted: 'If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day.' The X owner later retweeted the results of an unscientific poll he conducted on the platform last month and wrote, 'VOX POPULI VOX DEI 80% voted for a new party.' Musk informally launched the party on Saturday, after bashing both the Democrats and the GOP by referring to them as the 'uniparty.' According to the Axios report, the Trump administration plans to release both raw and "enhanced" versions of videos that reportedly show that no one entered the area of the prison where Epstein was being held on the night of his death. The investigators believe this supports the earlier medical evidence that the financier took his own life, a version of events several right-wing influencers have questioned in the past. The memo also reportedly notes that investigators did not find any 'incriminating 'client list'' owned by Epstein or 'credible evidence' to support claims that Epstein was blackmailing influential clients. Tangent In the Truth Social post, where he mocked Musk's new party, Trump said Musk was angry about his signature spending bill's passage, as it 'eliminates the ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate.' The president claimed when Musk endorsed him in the 2024 race, he asked the billionaire 'whether or not he knew that I was going to terminate the EV Mandate…He said he had no problems with that.' Trump also said Musk had asked him to nominate 'one of his close friends,' Jared Isaacman, for the NASA administrator role. The president claimed he was 'surprised to learn' that Isaacman was a 'blue blooded Democrat' and also felt it was 'inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon's corporate life.' Trump withdrew Isaacman's nomination in May. TikTok to Launch New Version of U.S. App Amid Looming Sale

China's social media giant TikTok is reportedly developing a new version of its U.S. app amid the looming threat of a potential ban or sale in the country. The news was first reported by The Information on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter. TikTok parent ByteDance is planning to launch the new app version in the U.S. on September 5, ahead of the extended deadline of September 17. U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok's ban or sale in the U.S. for the third time in order to find suitable 'non-Chinese' buyers for its U.S. operations. Last week, Trump noted that he has found a group of very wealthy buyers for the app, but that China's approval would be required for the potential sale. He is expected to start talks with China on Monday or Tuesday and is confident that Beijing will approve the sale. TikTok Aims to Stay in the U.S. Market TikTok boasts approximately 170 million American users and seeks to continue operations in the lucrative U.S. market through these strategic negotiations. According to available information, TikTok plans to launch the new app on U.S. app stores on September 5. Users will eventually need to download the new app to continue using the service. However, the existing app will also remain functional until March 2026, subject to the completion of a sale. An earlier deal for the sale of TikTok's U.S. operations to American buyers was in progress but was set aside following the imposition of stringent reciprocal U.S. tariffs on China. TikTok's problem came into focus last year after former President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which requires TikTok to sell its U.S. operations to non-Chinese owners. The White House is concerned about the potential leakage of Americans' private data to Chinese officials through the app. However, TikTok and ByteDance have repeatedly denied any such wrongdoing. Currently, TikTok continues to operate in the U.S. under its original version but faces intense scrutiny and must find a resolution quickly to avoid a nationwide ban.
