Ukraine-Russia talks resume as Kyiv unleashes major drone attack on Russian airbases

Al Arabiya02-06-2025
In this episode of Global News Today, presented by Tom Burges Watson, we report on Ukrainian and Russian delegations beginning a second round of peace talks in Istanbul, where both sides are expected to exchange proposals on how to end the three-year war. We also cover Ukraine's massive drone offensive, code-named 'Spider's Web,' which reportedly destroyed 34 percent of Russia's strategic bomber fleet. Ukrainian security services say the strike –planned for over 18 months – caused more than $7 billion in damage and left over 40 Russian bomber planes in flames.

Romania to buy Israeli air defense systems for nearly $2.3 billion

BUCHAREST: Romania announced Monday it has signed a deal with an Israeli company to buy six anti-aircraft systems, as the NATO member and Ukraine neighbor looks to boost its defense posture. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Romania has gained in strategic importance and exposure to defense risks, with Russian drone fragments regularly falling on its soil. Under a framework agreement signed with Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems last week, Romania is set to purchase six integrated Shorad-Vshorad anti-aircraft systems for more than two billion euros ($2.3 billion). Israel's Iron Dome air defense system is one of Rafael's best-known products. According to the deal, three further contracts will need to be signed under the framework agreement, which runs for seven years. The procurement deal, which was rubber-stamped by Romania's parliament in 2020, 'aims to equip the army with advanced weapon systems designed to protect against air threats, including drones and cruise missiles,' the eastern European country's defense ministry said in a statement. In a recent interview on public television, Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu likened the anti-aircraft systems to 'the Iron Dome... when the Iranians attack,' saying 'that's Shorad-Vshorad and it protects Tel Aviv.' In 2024, Romania signed a deal with the United States to purchase 32 F-35 fighter jets for an estimated $6.5 billion. The Black Sea nation has been striving for years to bolster its defense forces and replace its aging Soviet-era equipment.

Russian, Iranian defense ministers discuss strengthening military cooperation, RIA reports

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov and his Iranian counterpart Aziz Nasirzadeh discussed strengthening military cooperation at a meeting in Moscow, Russian state news agency RIA reported on Monday, citing the Iranian ambassador. The meeting followed talks on Sunday between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ali Larijani, a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, on the situation in the Middle East and issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program. Russia has a strategic partnership treaty with Iran, and condemned the Israeli and US bombing of Iranian nuclear sites in June.

Russia in favor of new peace talks with Ukraine, highlights differences between them

The Kremlin said on Monday that Moscow was in favor of a new round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine but the two sides' positions were diametrically opposed so there was a lot of diplomatic work to be done. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that Kyiv has sent Moscow an offer to hold another round of peace talks this week, and that he wants to speed up negotiations for a ceasefire. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that as soon as there was a definitive understanding of the date for the next round of talks then Moscow would announce it. 'There is our draft memorandum, there is a draft memorandum that has been handed over by the Ukrainian side. There is to be an exchange of views and talks on these two drafts, which are diametrically opposed so far,' Peskov said. Ukraine and Russia have held two rounds of talks in Istanbul, on May 16 and June 2, that led to the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war and the remains of dead soldiers. But the two sides have made no breakthrough towards a ceasefire or a settlement to end almost three and a half years of war.
