Crowley and Hurley give Munster the perfect start at Keady-Tassagh

Irish Examiner2 days ago
Wins for Shane Crowley and Emma Hurley gave Munster the perfect start to the All-Ireland series at Keady-Tassagh on Saturday.
Crowley's power gave him the edge over Tyrone's Eogan McVeigh in the boys U18 final. Twice he led by close to two bowls, but McVeigh rallied strongly in the final third. It was not enough to derail Crowley who is really maturing in his score management.
Emma Hurley was tested too by Ellie-May Carr in the girls U18 final. She took a while to stamp her authority on the score, but once she did, she looked awesome at times.
Carr kept pressing down to a brilliant purlicue around the last bend, which put Hurley in a sticky spot. She dealt with that with total calm, with two calculated perfect bowls.
Crowley's temperament was put under the microscope from the off as his first bowl was called. He didn't flinch, he responded with an equally good effort. McVeigh beat that by three metres, in what would be his only lead.
He was too wide with his next two and found himself a bowl down to Crowley's third. Crowley was close to two ahead after his fifth past Twyman's corner. McVeigh brought the lead under a bowl with a brilliant bowl up Gallogly's height.
This became the narrative for much of the score, McVeigh knocking the bowl, Crowley raising it again and threatening to push clear. Crowley was almost two in front again after ten over McGeown's height.
McVeigh closed the gap and saw it extend, till he finally got serious traction with a great 16th bowl past McKee's wall. He followed with another good bowl to the bridge. Crowley now had just 58m odds facing up the hill towards the line.
McVeigh's gains were squandered when he got a poor shot up the hill. Crowley hit back with a monster bowl that beat the line and gave him victory by a bowl of odds.
In the girls U18 final, Carr took the battle to Hurley winning the first three shots. Hurley won her first lead with a great fourth shot over McGeown's height. She pushed her lead out to 50m with her next one, but she could not break clear of a very tenacious Carr.
She finally gained a big lead with her ninth past Twynam's cottage. Carr was back in it after her bowl past Twynam's corner. Hurley moved up the gears and raised a bowl at the bus stop.
Carr made a valiant effort to turn the tide with a beautifully measured purlicue around the last bend. Hurley closed with two perfectly measured bowls, the first out under the hedge to full light, which kept her lead close to a bowl. She then sent a sizzling bowl down the hill past the line to seal it.

'I'm just gutted for the girls. The game was nearly over at half time'

MEATH MANAGER SHANE McCormack holds his head in his hands before facing the press. The 12-point All-Ireland final defeat to Dublin is hitting home. 'I'm just gutted for the girls, to be honest,' he begins after the 2-16 to 0-10 loss. 'We were always doubted, even at the start of the year before a ball was thrown in, to even get to a quarter-final stage. But we did believe within our circle that we would achieve it. Advertisement 'We (previously) played Dublin three times this year. A 16-point trimming in the league wasn't good so we sat down that week and had a chat among ourselves and we kind of worked on different tactics. And in fairness to the girls with the Leinster campaign, obviously we lost to Dublin in the Leinster final but we were gutted because Dublin got the last eight points without a reply from us. 'So coming into today's game, we knew what was going to happen but the game was nearly over at half time. In fairness to our girls, they battled to the end. I think we were 11 down at half time. In the second half, pretty pleased that we came out of the blocks quick enough. I think we lost the second half by a point. But I'm just gutted for the girls because they're a fantastic bunch.' It's Meath's first All-Ireland senior final defeat in their history. The Royals won their first in 2021, ending Dublin's Drive for Five, and backed it up in 2022. Two consecutive quarter-final defeats to Kerry followed, before they turned the tables and dethroned the 2024 champions in this year's semi-final. That was a huge performance — a stark contrast to today as they trailed by 13 points at one stage in the first half, and failed to score from play until after the restart. Vikki Wall dejected as Dublin celebrate. Leah Scholes / INPHO Leah Scholes / INPHO / INPHO 'Dublin were a little bit hungrier, to be honest,' McCormack continues, rueing 'small margins' like Vikki Wall's spurned goal opportunity when they trailed by one point early doors. 'In the first five or 10 minutes, they hit the blocks running. But there were a few passes that went astray with our girls. Obviously if the goal chances went in, I'm not saying it would have changed the result but we would have been in a different position at half time. It's very hard going in at half time in an All-Ireland final when you're 11 points down. The positive would be for our girls that they came out quick enough there in the second half.' 'When any Dublin team get ahead, they're very hard to claw back,' the former Kildare goalkeeper adds. 'But credit to Dublin today, they're a super team with multiple All-Stars and All-Ireland medal winners. 'We had 16 new girls onto the panel from last year and this year. I think nine girls got their first-ever senior start in an All-Ireland final today, so there are a lot of positives. It is healthy, even with the Under-20s winning the Leinster the other night as well. So it's very positive for Meath ladies football.' ***** Check out the latest episode of The42′s GAA Weekly podcast here

Rory Gaffney scores twice to send Shamrock Rovers 10 points clear at top of table

Premier Division: Shamrock Rovers 2 (Gaffney 47, 65) Derry City 0 A brace of goals, the second a terrific strike, from in-form Rory Gaffney heaped frustration on Derry City at Tallaght Stadium as Shamrock Rovers edged closer to a fifth title in six years. With 10 games now remaining, Stephen Bradley's side are 10 points clear of second-placed Bohemians and 11 ahead of Derry, who have now not beaten Rovers in 10 games stretching back to March 2023. A record extending 22nd League of Ireland championship is now all but Rovers' to lose. The big result was just the tonic Rovers would have wanted as they now travel to Kosovo to meet FC Ballkani in the first leg of their Conference League third round tie this week. Rovers head coach Bradley rotated his squad once again with five changes from the 0-0 draw with St Joseph's last Thursday. READ MORE And they enjoyed promising early possession here, troubling the Derry defence twice in quick succession nine minutes in. First Gaffney did well to set up ex-Derry midfielder Aaron McEneff who should have done better than shoot over the top. Seconds later, skipper Roberto Lopes's route-one ball over the top dropped for Gaffney who spun visiting captain Mark Connolly, cut across Alex Bannon to rifle narrowly wide. Having survived, Derry, who gave a debut to new signing Jamie Stott in defence, responded to cut Rovers open a trifle too easily on 12 minutes. Sadou Diallo's delightful chip in behind found the clever run of Michael Duffy whose shot beat Ed McGinty with Rovers relieved to see the ball come back off a post. Duffy then skilfully ghosted between Rovers' experienced defenders Lopes and Dan Clary on 28 minutes to shoot wide across goal. And there was another scare for Rovers five minutes before the interval. Duffy again was involved, feeding impressive wingback Brandon Fleming who nipped past Lopes to get his shot away which required a frantic clearance a yard from goal by Lee Grace. Rory Gaffney scores the second goal of the game. Photograph: Ryan Byrne/INPHO Second best in the first half, Rovers came out with added impetus for the restart and were ahead inside two minutes. Danny Mandroiu flicked on Grace's ball down the left for Josh Honohan who skipped away to cross and give Gaffney a simple tap-in. In their groove now, Rovers were close to doubling their lead in the following minutes. Having come in for his debut at half-time, new loan signing Connor Malley shaved the crossbar. Then Honohan really should have scored but contrived to shoot wide dead in front of goal from Mandroiu's cross. Gaffney would make no such mistake on 65 minutes. Powering away down the right on to Dylan Watts' ball, the veteran front-runner cut inside Bannon before driving a shot past Brian Maher to the far corner of the net. It marked the 35-year-old Tuam striker's fifth goal in his last six games; his eighth league goal of the campaign and 10th in total for the season. Derry's bad night in Dublin 24 was compounded on 80 minutes when defender Bannon was dismissed for a foul on Honohan, his second yellow card. St Patrick's Athletic had the ideal fillip ahead of their Conference League meeting with Turkish side Besiktas with a 2-0 away to Waterford to leapfrog them back up to sixth place. Kian Leavy threaded a perfectly weighted through pass for the run of 17-year-old Tottenham-bound Mason Melia who slipped the ball confidently past Stephen McMullan for an 18th minute lead. Substitute Conor Carty sealed the points on 84 minutes when shooting home Brandon Kavanagh's corner. On Saturday, champions Shelbourne warmed up for their Europa League trip to Croatia with a 2-0 win at in-form Sligo Rovers to move to within four points of Bohemians, whom they meet at Tolka Park next Saturday. A fine solo goal from Ali Coote put Joey O'Brien's side into a 47th minute lead. Sean Boyd, who hadn't scored in the league since hitting a brace on the opening night of the campaign, was sprung from the bench to add the second goal on 77 minutes. Sligo finished the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Sam Sargeant was sent off for handling the ball outside his box.
