Cannes 2025 is laying down the law when it comes to red carpet attire with no dramatic gowns, no exaggerated nude dresses and absolutely no endless trains. But comedian and actor Vir Das isn't one to follow rules quietly. Instead, he trolled the festival in the most Vir Das way possible.
On his Instagram, Vir shared what appeared to be an image of him at the French Riviera, decked out in a voluminous, nude-coloured outfit with an extravagant train, seemingly violating every single dress code restriction the festival had announced. But there was a catch. The image was edited.
Poking fun at the new red carpet policies, Vir captioned the post: 'Large, voluminous, nude, long train. In your face #cannesfilmfestival you don't know what you're missing." His humorous twist on the ongoing fashion debate at Cannes made it clear that he hadn't actually set foot at the event this year but was still very much in the conversation.

This isn't the first time the comic has commented on Cannes with his trademark sarcasm. In a previous post, he jokingly wrote, 'It is with deep regret that I announce I will no longer be attending the Cannes film festival because of the new red carpet rules. For multiple generations nude voluminous gowns with large trains have been culturally specific to the comedy community…" He continued, describing a faux couture outfit he had planned—complete with a 78-foot-long train and sleeves that 'gently showcased the heart of [his] s*****m."
Beyond the jokes, Vir also used his platform to address elitism within Bollywood over influencers walking the Cannes red carpet. In a post, he defended the presence of digital creators, writing, 'Look. I work largely with new unknown designers. So I get the appeal and eyeballs that a red carpet brings… I also respect the hustle that it takes to get yourself there."
