Renfrew man told partner to "kill herself" after drunken argument
A Renfrew roofer told his partner she should kill herself after they had a drunken argument.
Mark McAdam admitted he caused the woman 'fear or alarm' in November last year at a flat in Paisley.
The 46-year-old acted in an aggressive manner, repeatedly shouted at her and directed abusive remarks towards her.
The procurator fiscal depute told Paisley Sheriff Court McAdam and the woman have been in an on/off relationship since 2010. She explained: 'On Friday, November 15, last year, the accused and the woman were together in the woman's flat.
'They both had been drinking throughout the evening. Around 11.20pm the accused became angry towards her and started an argument. The accused then shouted at her, 'why don't you commit suicide.'
'Because of his behaviour, the woman used the concierge service in her hallway and asked the concierge to call police.
'Shortly after midnight, police attended and traced the accused. He was arrested, caution and charged making no reply. He was taken to Greenock police station where he was later released on an undertaking.
'CCTV footage from the incident was observed which showed the woman in a distressed state and wiping tears from her eyes.'
Sheriff Eoin McGinty asked defence agent Stephen Graham if McAdam was working as a roofer as outlined in the background report prepared by social workers. Mr Graham confirmed that was correct.
Sheriff McGinty stated: 'He is a roofer and has expressed strongly that he won't undertake unpaid work. He's not in a sweetshop, he doesn't get to pick and choose what happens here today.
'He told the writer of this report he wouldn't give his consent to do unpaid work and that only leaves one single option for me.'
Mr Graham told the court McAdam had 'reservations' about doing unpaid work due to it affecting his ability to carry out his paid employment.
He added: 'My submission is for the court to impose a restriction of liberty order assessment, but he accepts if you find a community payback order more suitable, he will comply.'
McAdam, of Paisley Road, was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the community and made subject to supervision of the social work department for 12 months.
Sheriff McGinty added: 'Ordinarily, I'd let these run but given you've voiced considerable reservations, I'm going to fix a review hearing in two months to ensure you are doing the order.'
A review hearing was assigned for September 1.

Damage repaired at Connah's Quay cemetery - so what's next?
Earlier this year, the Leader reported on the vandalism which had taken place at the Bryn Road cemetery in Connah's Quay. Numerous gravestones were damaged, causing 'widespread distress' to families in the local communities. But, the community of Connah's Quay soon rallied together to address the issue, and in total they have managed to raise a sum of £4,830 to repair the damage caused. Blackwells Stonemasons, Buckley Memorials and Delyn Memorials joined forces to fix 12 gravestones free of charge, with the money then being used for six more 'substantially damaged' ones to be fixed. Cllr Dave Richardson, who represents the Golftyn Ward where the cemetery is based, hailed the community spirit shown for helping fix the issue. He said: "The money that was raised by the community towards repairs after the vandalism was amazing, locals were so generous. Damage done to gravestones at the Bryn Road cemetery in Connah's Quay. (Image: UGC) "A lot of work was done for free by Blackwells Stonemasons, Buckley Memorials and Delyn Memorials. They all donated free labour which was an absolutely incredible gesture for the families effected." The next steps to protect the cemetery are now being considered, in order to ensure that level of vandalism does not take place again TOP STORIES TODAY Cllr Richardson says the town council has secured £60,000 of funding to have the fencing and railings renewed there. He added that residents have been suggesting their own ideas in order to keep the site safe. He said: "We now have money left over which we will be spending the cemetery. The most requested idea is CCTV. "We would be looking to get our remaining pot fund-matched, then go to Full Circle Security on Connahs Quay High Street to discuss options. "The fencing is something I have chased for over three years, along with Cllr Bernie Attridge. Even before being elected, it was something that I was passionate about. In my opinion, the cemetery looked neglected. "But, it does look tidier more recently." North Wales Police have said that their investigation into the damage caused at the cemetery is currently ongoing. An individual remains on bail.
