Ignou introduces new programmes in development communication and journalism
These courses aim to equip learners with the skills needed for impactful media engagement and strategic communication. They are tailored for those seeking to play a critical role in bridging the gap between policymakers and the public, using media and communication as tools for awareness, participation, and transparency in developmental processes.
"As India continues to grapple with the demands of equitable growth, climate change, and social empowerment, the need for communicators who can navigate the intersection of policy and public engagement has become increasingly urgent.
The PGDDC, a one-year diploma, and the two-year MADJ programme are designed to train learners in strategic communication, development reporting, policy analysis, and research," an official said.
Both programmes are open to graduates from any discipline and are delivered in English, with learning materials available in both digital and print formats.
"The curriculum is structured to build critical skills in writing, journalism, community media, planning, and programme evaluation—all within the broader context of achieving the sustainable development goals," added the official. These programmes are particularly suited for aspiring development communicators, NGO professionals, govt officers, educators, and those working with national or international development agencies.

The video has sparked divided reactions online. While some users expressed solidarity with the customer, others accused her of escalating a non-issue for social media attention. 'What do you want, information or a viral video?' one comment read. Another added, 'Someone is already assisting her in Kannada. What's the problem then?' However, a large section of users rallied behind the woman's concern, questioning the bank's hiring practices. A user wrote, 'As customers, we expect to be served respectfully and in a language we're comfortable with. After all, it's our money that keeps the bank running. Public sector banks like Canara Bank were nationalised to serve all citizens, not just a few' 'Why aren't locals being given job opportunities?' and 'If you're operating in Karnataka, you must be able to serve in Kannada' were common refrains. In response to the backlash, Canara Bank's official handle on X (formerly Twitter) issued a statement affirming its commitment to Kannada and its customers. 'Kannada is our foundation, your support is our strength,' the statement read. 'For Canara Bank, Karnataka is not just a state, it is our birthplace. Kannada is not merely a language to us, it is a feeling, a pride. We are committed to providing services in the local language at every branch in the state.' The bank added that in today's multilingual India, staff may come from different states, but 'our heart always resonates with our customers.' This comes after a viral video from SBI's Surya Nagar (Anekal Taluk) branch in Bengaluru showed a heated exchange in which a branch manager refused to speak Kannada with a local customer. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the behaviour as 'strongly condemnable' and praised the bank's swift action. US arrests Nirav Modi's brother Nehal in ₹13,000 crore PNB scam
US authorities have arrested Nehal Modi, the younger brother of fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi, based on extradition requests made by India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud. Nehal was taken into custody on Friday, according to a report by the Press Trust of India, quoting US officials. The next hearing in Nehal's case is set for July 17. According to officials, Nehal may apply for bail during the hearing. The arrest is in response to a joint extradition plea filed by the ED and the CBI. US prosecutors are pursuing the extradition on two charges — one count of money laundering under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and another for criminal conspiracy under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. Multi-crore bank fraud The alleged fraud was reportedly carried out by Nirav Modi, his brother Nehal, and their uncle Mehul Choksi. Born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium, Nehal is fluent in English, Gujarati, and Hindi. He is wanted in India for allegedly laundering money on behalf of his brother Nirav, who is currently in a London prison, also facing extradition to India. Officials claim Nehal helped hide and move large amounts of illegal funds using shell companies and international transfers, violating India's financial laws. Nehal named in ED chargesheet The Enforcement Directorate has named Nehal Modi in its chargesheet in the case. He has been accused of destroying evidence and of 'knowingly and intentionally' supporting Nirav Modi in carrying out illegal activities. According to the ED, after the PNB scam was uncovered, Nehal, along with Nirav's trusted associate Mihir R Bhansali, 'took 50 kg gold and substantial cash from Dubai, and directed dummy directors not to reveal his name before the authorities'.

CUET UG 2025 topper: Ludhiana's Ananaya Jain only candidate to score 100 percentile in 4 out of 5 subjects
Seventeen-year-old Ananaya Jain from Punjab's Ludhiana has emerged as the Common University Entrance Test or CUET UG 2025 topper by scoring at the 100th percentile in four out of five subjects. Data shared by the National Testing Agency, which conducted the test, reveals that this year, 13,54,699 candidates registered for the test, of whom 10,71 ,735 appeared. Seventeen candidates have scored 100 percentile in three out of their opted subjects, 150 candidates in two and 2679 candidates in one of their opted subjects, NTA informed, without disclosing their names. Overall, she secured 1225.93 out of a possible 1250 marks in the undergraduate entrance test. Punjab's Minister of Industry & Commerce, Investment Promotion, and NRI Affairs Sanjeev Arora congratulated her for the achievement on X. '…Ananaya is the only student in the country to score 100 percentile in 4 out of 5 subjects — a truly exceptional feat that has made all of Punjab proud. Wishing her continued success as she begins the next chapter of her academic journey,' the minister wrote. Ravneet Singh Bittu, Union Minister of State for Railway & Food Processing Industries, wrote, '…She has made Punjab and the entire nation proud by being the only candidate to score 100 percentile in four out of five subjects — a truly remarkable feat. Such brilliance and dedication among our youth are a strong reflection of New India's academic excellence. Best wishes to her for a bright future ahead.' Ananya is a commerce student at DAV Public School, Pakhowal Road, Ludhiana. She scored 98.8 per cent in her Class 12 board exam and 97 per cent in the Class 10 board exam. Her father Manav Jain is a chartered accountant and mother Neeti Jain is a homemaker. She wants to follow her elder brother's steps and pursue an Economics honours degree at the University of Delhi. 'I have a strong interest in economics. It is my favourite subject. DU provides the best student crowd and a rigorous academic environment for this course and hence I want to pursue this course there,' Ananya told HT. For CUET UG preparation, Ananya mostly relied on NCERT textbooks and practiced extensively with mock tests. She also enrolled in a crash course for a month. She began her preparation for the English section two years ago, regularly working on comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar exercises. (With inputs from HT Correspondents)
