Movie On Adityanath: Censors to take a call in 2 days

Mumbai: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that it will decide in two days the applications filed by the makers of a movie purportedly based on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's life, seeking certification.
A bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale initially rapped the CBFC, commonly known as the censor board, for 'sitting on the application' and not passing the order within the timeline prescribed in the rules.
Pursuant to this, the board told the high court that the applications would be decided within two days and the makers would be informed about the decision. The bench accepted the statement and disposed of the petition filed by the makers of the film.
Samrat Cinematics, in its plea filed in the HC, questioned the CBFC's 'arbitrary, unreasonable, and unexplained' delay in processing the certification applications for its film -- Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi, including its teaser, trailer and promotional song. The plea claimed that the CBFC had also sought for a No Objection Certificate from the office of the Uttar Pradesh CM.
Senior counsel Ravi Kadam and advocates Satatya Anand and Nikhil Aradhe told the court that as per the rules, the application seeking certification has to be decided within five days.
"The petitioner has in fact sought priority clearance and has paid three times the amount," Kadam told the court.
The bench then said that the censor board has to follow the timeline. "You cannot sit on an application especially when they have paid the priority charges. The application has to be decided," the HC said.
The movie, inspired by the book The Monk Who Became Chief Minister, which is purportedly based on Yogi Adityanath's life, was scheduled for a theatrical release on August 1.

HC allows Didihat candidate to contest panchayat polls

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand high court (HC) has allowed Narendra Deupa, a district panchayat candidate from Didihat, to contest the upcoming polls. His nomination had earlier been rejected for not disclosing criminal records in the form. A division bench of Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra passed the order on Friday while hearing Deupa's appeal. The returning officer had dismissed his nomination for leaving the criminal record section blank. Deupa argued that the form format created by the State Election Commission (SEC) went against Section 9 of the State Panchayati Raj Rules and claimed he didn't need to fill the section as he had already been acquitted in the cases. During the hearing, the court asked about election symbol allocation. The SEC replied that nomination papers had already been verified and ballot papers were sent for printing. It also said that forms not filled as per the rules were rejected. The court expressed concern that ballot papers had been printed while several election-related petitions were still pending. It further noted that printing before allocating symbols and considering candidates' symbol preferences raised questions. Deupa had earlier approached a single bench, which dismissed his petition. He then appealed to the division bench, which stayed the rejection of his nomination, saying it was "against the rules."

CBFC Revises Stand On Suresh Gopi's Janaki Vs State Of Kerala, Now Orders Just Two Cuts

Last Updated: The CBFC initially recommended 96 cuts for the film 'Janaki Vs State of Kerala' but later agreed to certify it with just two minor cuts after a Kerala High Court hearing. Posters of the film. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has now agreed to clear the film Janaki Vs State of Kerala with only two minor cuts, down from the 96 it originally recommended. The move came during a Kerala High Court hearing on July 9, 2025, where the board's counsel informed the court of its revised approach to the controversial film starring actor-politician Suresh Gopi and actress Anupama Parameswaran. The film had previously faced opposition from the Mumbai office of the CBFC over the use of the protagonist's name, 'Janaki', a name associated with the Hindu goddess Sita, in a narrative that includes sexual assault. The board considered the name inappropriate for the context and had cited concerns about the potential for religious discord. 'In the subject film, when the lead character, who is named after Goddess Sita/Janaki, is raped, she is then aided by a man belonging to one particular religious community and is cross-examined and asked harrowing questions by a person belonging to another religious community. This religious dichotomy in the treatment of a character bearing Goddess Sita's sacred name has the potential to inflame communal tensions and create divisive narratives between religious groups," the CBFC stated in an affidavit submitted to the court. The affidavit also warned that permitting such portrayals could encourage similar scenes in future films. As a compromise, the board has now allowed the title to be retained with slight modifications – either Janaki V Vs State of Kerala or V Janaki Vs State of Kerala, reflecting the protagonist's full name, Janaki Vidhyadharan. Additionally, the CBFC has suggested muting the protagonist's name in a particular cross-examination scene. The Kerala division of the CBFC had previously cleared the film without objections, but the Mumbai office's concerns brought the issue to court, highlighting inconsistencies in certification across regions. The Kerala High Court, led by Justice N. Nagaresh, had earlier screened the film on July 5 and has now adjourned the matter to 1:45 pm today to allow the filmmakers time to respond to the proposed changes. Originally slated for release on June 20, the film's release has been delayed due to the certification dispute. The filmmakers have previously criticised the CBFC's initial demands as 'arbitrary" and 'unwarranted." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
