OpenAI working on payment checkout system within ChatGPT: Report

OpenAI is planning to take a cut from online product sales made through ChatGPT by integrating a payment checkout system into the chatbot, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing multiple people familiar with the proposals.
Merchants that fulfill orders through the payment system will pay a commission to OpenAI, the report said.
The move would allow OpenAI to tap a new source of revenue, taking advantage of the heavy user traffic on ChatGPT, in addition to its traditional subscription model.
The checkout feature is still in development, but OpenAI and partners such as e-commerce platform Shopify have been presenting early versions of the system to brands and discussing financial terms, the report said.
OpenAI declined to comment and Shopify did not respond to a request for comment.
The two companies had announced a partnership earlier this year, shortly after the AI startup launched an enhanced shopping feature to better display products and reviews, the report added.
The Sam Altman-led company currently displays suggested products on ChatGPT through links that take users to online retailers' websites.
OpenAI said earlier this year that its annualized revenue run rate surged to $10 billion as of June, up from $5.5 billion in December 2024. The company, however, lost around $5 billion last year.

The net profit attributable to the owners of the company rose 78 per cent year-on-year for the June quarter to Rs 26,994 crore as compared to Rs 15,138 crore in the same period last year. The surge in net profit came after the company sold about 4.9 per cent shares of Asian Paints for about Rs 9,579 crore in two tranches. 'The performance of our businesses and growth initiatives gives me confidence that Reliance will continue its stellar track record of doubling every 4-5 years,' said RIL Chairman and MD Mukesh D. Revenue from oil-to-chemicals business for June quarter was lower by 1.5 per cent to Rs 154,804 crore ($ 18.1 billion) due to fall in crude oil prices and lower volumes on account of planned shutdown. Performance was supported by improvement in fuel and downstream product margins. Natural decline in KGD6 gas production resulted in marginally lower EBITDA for Oil & Gas segment. 'Retail's business performance registered customer base expanded to 358 million, along with significant improvement across operating metrics. We are focusing on strengthening the portfolio of own FMCG brands, which resonate with the tastes of Indian consumers,' Ambani said. Tata Sons sets up RS 500 crore AI-171 Memorial Trust for Air India crash victims

Tata Sons has formally set up a public charitable trust — The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust — to support the victims and families affected by the tragic Air India AI-171 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad. The group has pledged a total of Rs 500 crore towards the trust, with Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, headed by Noel Tata, contributing Rs 250 crore each. The trust will provide financial and rehabilitation support, including a Rs 1 crore ex-gratia payment to the families of the deceased, medical assistance to those seriously injured, and aid for rebuilding the B.J. Medical College hostel, which was damaged during the crash. The horrific incident, which occurred on June 12, claimed the lives of 241 out of the 242 passengers on board, as well as several individuals on the ground. 'The Trust will be funded and will commence its work in all earnestness after necessary registration with the tax authorities and other operational formalities, currently underway, are completed,' it said in a statement. The Trust will provide both immediate and continuing support to the dependents/next-of-kin of the deceased, to those who were injured, and to all others who are directly or collaterally affected by the accident. Importantly, the trust will also extend support to first responders, medical teams, disaster relief workers, and government personnel who played key roles in the rescue and recovery operations following the crash. This includes assistance to address trauma, mental health challenges, and other distress these individuals may have experienced in the course of their service. The AI-171 Trust has been formally registered in Mumbai and will be governed by a five-member board. The first two trustees named are S. Padmanabhan, a long-serving Tata Group veteran, and Sidharth Sharma, General Counsel at Tata Sons. The remaining trustees will be appointed shortly. Commenting shortly after the tragedy, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, who also chairs Air India, had spoken of the need for long-term care beyond financial help. 'There are structures we want to put in place. One of the things we've been thinking about is creating a trust — something sustainable that can support affected families,' he said. Meanwhile, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has stated that the preliminary findings into the AI-171 crash have opened up more questions than answers, indicating that the investigation remains ongoing and complex. The AI-171 Trust represents a significant and compassionate effort by the Tata Group to support recovery and rebuild lives after one of India's worst aviation disasters.
