Riyad Mahrez lifts lid on St Mirren transfer near miss after fleeing Paisley on stolen bike

Daily Record2 days ago
The 34-year-old Algerian ace has enjoyed a career at the very top - but might have started out in Scotland
Riyad Mahrez has gone down as one of the modern greats after winning Premier League titles with Leicester and Manchester City.

But the Algerian legend could have been a sensation at ST MIRREN – until he escaped the Buddies on a borrowed bike!

Mahrez joined the Saudi Pro League exodus and is currently starring for Al Ahli.

The playmaker squared up against Celtic in the preseason Como Cup at the weekend.
But he could have been lining up against the Hoops on a more regular basis after going on trial with Saints as a teenager.
Mahrez was a kid in France at the time but he lifted the lid to Record Sport on his incredible experience in Scotland – when he eventually got fed up with the cold and did a bunk on a bike he found at his hotel in Paisley.
He laughed: 'It's life, it was part of the journey. Everyone has a story to tell!
'I liked Scotland. I was there for like two months but it was too cold for me!'
Mahrez eventually signed for Le Harve instead and was snapped up by Leicester City for just £400,000.
He was part of the Foxes shock Premier League winning side and then went on to star for Pep Guardiola 's Man City all-stars.

Liverpool transfer news: Arne Slot given Alexander Isak warning as £120m saga rolls on

Liverpool's summer transfer splurge has not yet reached its conclusion but their pursuit of Newcastle's Alexander Isak shows no sign of reaching a conclusion Liverpool's transfer business so far this summer has been so impressive that even Rio Ferdinand has admitted he is blown away. ‌ But with Arne Slot 's squad already boosted by more than £250m worth of new talent, there remains an expectation that their business will continue with the addition of Alexander Isak from Newcastle in a transfer that would exceed £100m. ‌ A deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is not being ruled out either ahead of a campaign of high expectations at Anfield. ‌ Premier League campaign gets underway. Isak saga Alexander Isak has been told by Simon Jordan to "buckle up" because Newcastle may well dig their heels in and tell the Swede that he's not going anywhere. The striker recently informed the Magpies that he wants to explore his options away from St James' Park with Liverpool now his most likely destination. Isak has not joined Newcastle on their pre-season tour with fitness cited as the issue and the ex- Crystal Palace owner Jordan has challenged Liverpool to get a move on with their recruitment and make a bid - while also insisting that the Magpies are well within their rights to protect their asset and their club. Wright decision Liverpool have agreed a deal with Salford City over a move for Will Wright. The Reds are set to beat Arsenal to the signing of the 17-year-old forward as they finalise talks with the player's representatives to get the transfer over the line. ‌ The Gunners agreed a deal with Salford earlier in the summer but now look to see their move hijacked. Arsenal were said to have first submitted a bid worth £250,000 plus add-ons for Wright, a figure greater than Liverpool's reported first offer of £100,000 plus add-ons. Target goes elsewhere Saudi outfit NEOM are close to completing a deal for highly-rated French defender Nathan Zeze with the 20-year-old set to choose the Middle East over a switch to the Premier League. ‌

Wednesday's briefing: Lionesses celebrate and Trafford rejoins Man City

Transfers continue to dominate the landscape with Manchester City bringing back a former academy graduate and speculation surrounding Newcastle's Alexander Isak showing no signs of abating. We're not done yet – Williamson England captain Leah Williamson insists the Lionesses still have plenty to achieve (Lucy North/PA) An emotional Leah Williamson insisted 'this story is not done yet' as England's celebrations following their Euro 2025 triumph continued in central London on Tuesday. There was an open-top bus parade as thousands of fans flocked to see the procession along the Mall, before a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. Less than 48 hours after the Lionesses retained their European Championship crown by beating Spain in the Basel final on penalties, Williamson said: 'I'm holding back tears. I've been crying all the way down the Mall. This is unbelievable and it's one of the best things we've ever been a part of so thanks for coming out. 'Everything we do, we do it for us and our team but we do it for the country and young girls. This job never existed 30 or 40 years ago and we're making history every single step. Stay with us, this story is not done yet.' Mbeumo relishing Bruno connection Bryan Mbeumo is looking forward to linking up with new Manchester United team-mate Bruno Fernandes (Bradley Collyer/PA) Manchester United's new signing Bryan Mbeumo says he is excited about linking up with Bruno Fernandes. Cameroon winger Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals and provided seven assists for Brentford in the Premier League last season, signed a five-year contract last week to become United's third summer signing. When asked on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast who he was most looking forward to playing alongside, Mbeumo told the former United defender: 'Of course, Bruno. 'Everyone sees in the past years. He can shoot, he can cross, he can do crazy ball. Yeah, for a striker, you just enjoy that.' Trafford 'home' at City Goalkeeper James Trafford has rejoined former club Manchester City from Burnley (Nick Potts/PA) England Under-21s goalkeeper James Trafford's return to Manchester City fulfils a dream he had of going back to his former club. Trafford has signed a five-year contract with the side he left for Burnley in 2023 after City activated a £27million buy-back clause. 'Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City,' said the 22-year-old. 'This is the place I call home – it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play.' Isak future not in Howe's full control Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe insists Alexander Isak is 'still our player' (John Walton/PA) Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has admitted that he is not in 'full control' over Alexander Isak's future. Isak has been heavily linked with Liverpool after it was reported the 25-year-old was keen to explore a move away from Newcastle. The Sweden striker still has three years left on his contract at Newcastle, who he joined in the summer of 2022 from Spanish side Real Sociedad, but has been absent from the club's pre-season tour of the Far East. 'He is still our player. He's contracted to us,' Howe said at a press conference in Seoul. 'We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control.' What's on today? Rangers will look to hold on to their 2-0 advantage from the first leg when they take on Panathinaikos in Greece in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. League of Ireland side Shelbourne have a tougher task as they face Qarabag in Azerbaijan with a 3-0 deficit.

Arsenal news: Viktor Gyokeres call to be made as former target sees price drop

Arsenal have landed some major signings this summer but continue to be linked with Crystal Palace ace Eberechi Eze whilst Real Madrid could still offload Rodygo Arsenal's summer business has now seen them spend well over £200million but Mikel Arteta is prepared to continue scouring the market for new arrivals. ‌ The Gunners are looking to end a run of three straight second place finishes and the club have been aggressive in the market, finally capturing the No 9 they've been looking for in Viktor Gyokeres. Martin Zubimendi is also a shrewd addition whilst Noni Madueke has joined from Chelsea. ‌ Mikel Arteta is looking to add more firepower to a frontline that already includes the likes of Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka. ‌ The Arsenal boss had claimed as recently as last week that his squad was lacking in depth and that Arsenal were "constantly looking in the market". More signings could head to the Emirates - here's the latest news from north London. Gyokeres closes on debut Arteta has confirmed Arsenal could give a debut to new summer signing Gyokeres but needed to assess his fitness levels before deciding whether to unleash him against north London rivals Tottenham on Thursday. Gyokeres completed his move to Arsenal over the weekend and the Swede was in attendance for the Gunners' 3-2 win over Newcastle on Sunday. Since then he has been involved in training with his new Gunners' team-mates, who will travel from Singapore to Hong Kong later today to continue their pre-season tour of Asia. Gyokeres failed to report for pre-season with Sporting Lisbon amid his feud with the club as he looked to force a move away. He is now looking to get up to speed regarding his conditioning with the Premier League opener coming in mid-August. Arsenal's Eze issue Arsenal's business is far from done and Eberechi Eze continues to be on their radar but the Athletic claims a deal is only expected to be done if Crystal Palace lower their asking price. The England international has a £68million release clause at Selhurst Park, which Arsenal believe is too much. ‌ Eze is in favour of a move across the Thames, Palace are under no financial pressure to sell - irrespective of which European competition they will be competing in. The Gunners have been in the market for a wide forward and were looking to land Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao before he commited his future to the Spanish side. Rodrygo has also been on their radar. ‌ Rodrygo price drops Talking of Rodrygo, Real Madrid are willing to reduce their £78m asking price for the Brazilian in the hope that Arsenal and Liverpool will reconsider signing him. The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Los Blancos this summer having fallen down the pecking order. The Brazilian is now waiting on a final decision from manager Xabi Alonso but Bernabeu chiefs continue to talk to potential suitors in the background and Real are ready to sell. The issue for the Spanish side though is, given the length of the saga surrounding Rodrygo, both Arsenal and Liverpool have since moved on to new targets.
