VIDEO: A heavy‑lift drone rescues a man trapped in floodwaters in China's Guangxi

A heavy‑lift drone recently carried out a dramatic rescue in flood‑hit Guangxi, China. A man trapped on a collapsing rooftop surrounded by swift waters was flown to safety in about one minute by a drone capable of lifting up to 100 kg. China has been deploying technologically advanced equipment to rescue people from devastating floods in recent days. Heavy rain struck China's southwestern Guizhou province again on Saturday, half-submerging the already flood-stricken riverside city of Rongjiang for a second time this week and prompting the evacuation of residents to higher ground. Located at the confluence of three rivers and home to 300,000 residents, Rongjiang was inundated earlier this week by record downpours that left six dead and forced more than 80,000 people to flee their homes. The amount of rain that fell over 72 hours was double the city's average for June. In response to the new round of flooding, authorities raised the city's flood emergency response level to the highest level on Saturday. The benchmark hydrological station on one of the rivers estimated that the peak water level would hit 253.50 metres (832 ft) at around 5 p.m. (0900 GMT), exceeding the safety threshold by 2 metres, state broadcaster CCTV said. More than 40,000 residents in Rongjiang had been urgently evacuated as of 6 p.m. (1000 GMT) on Saturday, according to the state broadcaster.

Hail falls on Al Ain as Dubai and Abu Dhabi swelter in humid conditions

Hailstones fell on the Al Ain region on Saturday afternoon, as the national weather centre warned of unsettled conditions. An orange and yellow alert was issued over parts of the Garden City region, and heavy rain was reported over the villages of Khatm Al Shiklah and Malaqit. Social media users showed images of hailstones, which is not unheard of at higher altitudes. The Al Ain region, home to most of the country's farms, typically sees the highest temperatures on record. The National Centre for Meteorology said it was 49.2°C in Sweihan, in the depths of the Al Ain desert, on Saturday. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, there was high humidity of about 60 per cent. The country has witnessed a blistering start to the summer, breaking temperature records in April and May. Social channels such as relish in capturing the most extreme conditions the emirates see, with hail a particular favourite, as shown here. Such studies suggest the UAE and the Gulf will see more extreme conditions and wetter, more humid weather due to climate change.
