Event organizers of Vancouver Chinatown Festival say security is their top priority
VANCOUVER — Organizers of the Vancouver Chinatown Festival say security is their top priority in the wake of the Lapu Lapu festival tragedy that killed 11 and injured dozens more in April.
Joey Kwan, executive director of the Vancouver Chinatown BIA, says enhanced safety measures have been in place as the 23rd festival is underway, drawing hundreds of people to enjoy the musical performances, marching band and children's theatre.
She says festival goers can expect to see heavy police presence throughout Vancouver's Chinatown and officers will station six security checkpoints. Blue fences have also been set up at the scene to block vehicles from entering.
Kwan says something unexpected may always arise, but event organizers and volunteers are ready to 'deal with the unexpected.'
The tragedies of the Lapu Lapu festival are still haunting people, and Vancouver resident Darcy Shoults says seeing tons of police presence at the event scene makes him feel 'quite safe.'
Shoults says two years ago he attended the Light Up Chinatown Festival, where a triple stabbing look place and left him devastated.
Blair Donnelly was on a day pass from a psychiatric hospital when he stabbed three people in Vancouver's Chinatown in September 2023.
Shoults says these attacks do happen, but we can't let them keep getting in the way of stopping us from coming together to show support and celebrate.

Ukraine's security service says its agents killed suspected Russian FSB assassins
Ukrainian intelligence agents on Sunday killed members of a Russian secret service cell wanted on suspicion of having shot dead a colonel in Ukraine's SBU security service last week, the SBU said. The intelligence agency said in a statement that the operation had sought the arrest of the agents of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), who it believes were behind the killing of SBU colonel Ivan Voronych in Kyiv on Thursday. "This morning a special operation was conducted, during which the members of the Russian FSB's agent cell started to resist, and therefore they were liquidated," the statement on the Telegram messaging app said. Russian authorities made no immediate public comment on Sunday's operation, which mirrored past assassinations of senior Russian military officials by Ukraine during the three-year-old war — a source of embarrassment for Moscow's vast intelligence agencies. The SBU said two people — a man and a woman — were suspected of having killed Voronych. It did not say how many suspected FSB agents had been killed on Sunday. According to the SBU, the alleged assassins were told by their handler to surveil their target and track his movements. They were eventually given the co-ordinates of a hiding place where they found a pistol with a suppressor, the SBU said. It said they had tried to "lay low" after Thursday's killing, but were tracked down by the SBU and police.

Man stabbed in downtown Toronto altercation, suspect at large

Man charged with 1st-degree murder after missing woman found dead off Highway 401
A 60-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman who was reported missing was found dead near Highway 401 in Pickering days later, Toronto police say. The woman, 67, was reported missing to police on Wednesday in Toronto near Brimley Road and Omni Drive, police said in a news release Sunday. The circumstances around her disappearance were considered suspicious. Officers found her dead on Friday around 12:05 a.m. near Highway 401 and Whites Road. The accused was in a common law relationship with the victim, police said in an email to CBC Toronto. He was initially charged with aggravated assault the same day she was reported missing, police said on Friday. Police said at the time the accused had provided some information and that charges could be upgraded as the investigation continues. This is the 20th homicide in Toronto this year, police said.
