Punjab: Indian Institutional Ranking Framework: PAU bags top podium spot, adjudged best among 67 state agri varsities

Hindustan Times17-06-2025
Reaffirming its stature as a national leader in agricultural education and research, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana has clinched the top spot among 67 state agricultural universities (SAU) and secured second position nationwide in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025.
Out of 78 agricultural and horticultural institutions assessed – including Indian Council of Agricultural Research-deemed universities, central agricultural universities and ICAR institutes – PAU stands just behind ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.
The rankings, regarded as a credible benchmark of academic excellence, are based on comprehensive evaluation criteria including research output, teaching quality, placements, industry linkages, innovation, and faculty performance. The Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) evaluates and ranks over 2500 institutions across the country.
PAU vice-chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal hailed the achievement as a reflection of the university's enduring commitment to academic and research excellence. 'PAU's consistent presence at the top of national rankings underscores the dedication of our faculty, students and staff. Our mission to support Indian agriculture through education, innovation and outreach remains stronger than ever,' he said.
Registrar Dr Rishi Pal Singh (IAS) also commended the university's performance, attributing the high ranking to PAU's holistic focus on cutting-edge research and farmer-centric innovation.
Dr MIS Gill, dean of postgraduate studies and a key coordinator in the ranking process, said that PAU's strong national positioning reaffirms its forward-thinking vision in agricultural science.
With a legacy that spans decades, PAU is known for its robust institutional framework comprising over 35 departments, six constituent colleges and 10 regional research stations. The university has developed over 950 crop varieties, significantly advancing productivity in wheat, rice, cotton and horticultural crops. It is also a leader in research publications, patents and technology transfers.
PAU's extension network impacts lakhs of farmers annually, delivering high-quality seeds, training and expert guidance. Its active collaborations with national and international bodies further reinforce its reputation as a global center of agricultural excellence.
The IIRF 2025 honour follows PAU's consistent top-tier performance in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, where it secured the top SAU position and the third overall rank among agricultural institutions in both 2023 and 2024.

India's rare-earth doping breakthrough hints at future of energy storage

New Delhi: Indian scientists have engineered a new energy storage material that demonstrated 118 per cent energy retention and 100 per cent coulombic efficiency , marking a major development in supercapacitor performance. The breakthrough has been achieved by researchers at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, in collaboration with Aligarh Muslim University. The research team, led by Dr Kavita Pandey at CeNS — an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology — used silver niobate (AgNbO₃), a lead-free material, as the base and introduced lanthanum doping to improve performance. According to the findings, the addition of lanthanum, a rare-earth element, improved the electronic conductivity of the material and reduced particle size, increasing surface area available for energy storage. The doped material retained 118 per cent of its initial capacity after repeated use and achieved 100 per cent coulombic efficiency, with no loss of energy during charge-discharge cycles. A prototype asymmetric supercapacitor developed using the new material was able to power an LCD display. The research has been published in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds. 'This research demonstrates the potential of lanthanum doping as a method to tailor silver niobate for high-performance supercapacitors,' the research paper stated. The study highlights the role of rare-earth doping in improving the properties of silver niobate nanoparticles for electrochemical energy storage. The team said future research would explore doping strategies in other perovskite materials and focus on scaling up lanthanum-doped silver niobate for commercial use.

IN-SPACe bid to boost space ecosystem

New Delhi: The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) announced on Thursday that it has facilitated the transfer of 10 advanced technologies developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to six Indian companies. The tripartite Technology Transfer Agreements (TTAs) were formalised between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), IN-SPACe, and the six recipient companies during a signing ceremony held at the IN-SPACe headquarters in Ahmedabad. These cutting-edge technologies span a range of applications including satellite launch systems, ground station infrastructure, geospatial tools, and defence-related equipment. The transfer aims to accelerate domestic innovation, reduce reliance on imported systems, and expand commercial opportunities for Indian companies in both the space and non-space sectors. IN-SPACe Chairman Dr Pawan Goenka described the move as a strategic step towards creating a self-sustaining space economy. 'India has a rich R&D heritage in space technology through ISRO, and it's now time for private players to harness and commercialise these technologies. This collaboration will strengthen our space ecosystem through industry-driven innovation,' he said.

'Connected By Belonging': PM Modi Hails Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister As 'Daughter Of Bihar'

Speaking at a community event in Couva, PM Modi highlighted deep cultural ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago, calling Kamla Persad-Bissessar 'the daughter of Bihar.' India is connected with Trinidad and Tobago by belonging, and not just by blood or surname, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, stressing that the ancestors of the country's Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, were from Bihar's Buxar. Bihar, the heritage of which is the pride of India and the world, considers Kamla Persad-Bissessar their daughter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said as he spoke at a community event at the National Cycling Velodrome, Couva. 'We are not just connected by blood or surname, we are connected by belonging. India looks out to you and welcomes you," PM Modi said. 'The ancestors of PM Kamla were from Bihar's Buxar. She has also visited the place. People consider her the daughter of Bihar," he said. 'Bihar's heritage is the pride of India and the world. The state has shown the way to the world in various fields for centuries. New opportunities will emerge from Bihar in the 21st century," PM Modi added. Also speaking about India's Chandrayaan-3 mission, PM Modi, while addressing the Indian community, said, 'I am sure everyone amongst you feels proud when India grows. For the New India, even the sky is not the limit. All of you must have cheered when India's Chandrayaan-3 landed on the Moon." 'We named the place where it landed as 'Shiv Shakti point'," he said. Also mentioning Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, PM Modi said, 'An Indian astronaut is onboard the International Space Station as we speak. We are now working on a manned space mission, 'Gaganyaan'. Soon, an Indian will walk on the moon, and India will have its own space station." 'We don't just count the stars, we try to reach them by mission like the 'Aaditya' mission. The moon is not far from us. India's achievements in space are not just ours, we are sharing its fruits with the rest of the world," PM Modi added. First Published: July 04, 2025, 07:10 IST
