A look at his lesser known films including Battle Royale with adults
The DC cinematic universe is set for a reboot as Superman soars back onto the big screen, this time under the direction of filmmaker James Gunn.
Gunn and his new studio are aiming to emulate at least some of the success he experienced while working on Marvel projects. However, Gunn's early filmography provides ample evidence as to why he's the right choice for the job.

Throughout his career, Gunn has demonstrated an ability to effortlessly merge genres, from horror to sci-fi and action adventures, always with a sharp focus on visuals and emotionally charged musical moments. While it remains to be seen where Superman and Gunn's future DC titles will rank among his other works, here's a brief rundown of his early films as writer, director or both.

Super

Super featured Rain Wilson, fresh off his fame from The Office, as an average bloke who's had a less than stellar life. He decides to reinvent himself as a superhero and tackle crime when his wife, a recovering addict, leaves him for another man, reports the Mirror.
That other man happens to be a drug-dealing Kevin Bacon, complete with a gang of henchmen. Crimson Bolt, lacking any actual superhuman abilities, resorts to brutal violence in his quest to rescue his wife from the clutches of a drug dealer.

While promoting Superman, Gunn stated that he didn't believe he'd ever made a superhero film before. While some might argue that Super fits the bill, the protagonist doesn't possess any real superpowers.
The film is now regarded as a dark cult classic, despite having received mixed reviews when it first came out. It graced some cinema screens in 2010 but was somewhat overshadowed by Kick-Ass, which was released the same year and shared a similar theme of deconstructing the comic book superhero trope.
A fan commented: "I love how this movie is messed up and it's exactly why I like it. it's definitely not for everyone. The main characters are sadistic and delusional. While the movie challenges the moral stuff in superhero genre by putting it into the real world context in a sick, disturbing manner, still doesn't take itself too seriously."

Super can be rented on Apple TV and Amazon Video.
The Belko Experiment

In 2017, Gunn wrote the screenplay for The Belko Experiment during a break from his Marvel commitments. The film aligns with the darker, more violent style of his earlier works.

The plot revolves around eighty Americans trapped in their corporate office as part of a lethal experiment where an unseen voice commands them to kill each other to survive.
A viewer remarked: "Underrated film, this idea has been done before but The Belko Experiment executes the movie better than its predecessors in my opinion. Reminds me of Battle Royale but in an office setting with adults."
The Belko Experiment is available for streaming on Prime Video.

Dawn of the Dead
Fans hail it as one of the best zombie movies

Another entry from Gunn's earlier work saw him take on screenwriting duties before eventually stepping behind the camera as director. Following his script work on the live-action Scooby-Doo adaptation (yes, that actually happened), Gunn was commissioned to write the screenplay for a reimagining of a zombie horror classic.
Fascinatingly, whilst Gunn penned the 2004 version, it was Zack Snyder - the very filmmaker he would later succeed as the creative figurehead for DC's film universe - who helmed the project.

The plot mirrors that of the original, following survivors of an outbreak that transforms the infected into cannibalistic zombies as they seek sanctuary in a shopping centre. Beyond confronting the walking dead, the group must also contend with internal conflicts.
This updated version introduced swifter, more ferocious zombies. One enthusiast described it as an 'instant classic' whilst another declared: "24 years later, still no other film can top this masterpiece. The best zombie film ever created in my opinion."
Dawn of the Dead is streaming on Netflix soon.

Guardians of the Galaxy
The first Guardians is Gunn's highest rated feature film
Numerous comic book enthusiasts and cinema-goers could hardly be blamed for being puzzled when it was revealed this relatively unknown group of characters would receive their own blockbuster. Let alone that Gunn would be the one to bring it to life.
However, the filmmaker stunned both audiences and reviewers with his vibrant and humorous cosmic escapade. This picture continues to be Gunn's most acclaimed feature on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a 92% rating despite spawning two follow-ups.

The Guardians of the Galaxy might have shed their obscurity, but it's important to recall that even among ardent fans, they weren't always household names. Viewing this film, it's completely understandable why James Gunn was chosen to take on Superman and his Justice League comrades.
A fan expressed their admiration by saying: "Guardians of the Galaxy is pure Marvel magic packed with humour, heart, stunning visuals, and a killer soundtrack. Every time I rewatch it, my mood instantly lifts. James Gunn turned this into a musical-action masterpiece."
Guardians of the Galaxy is streaming on Disney+.

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth says Scottish Highlands are 'an iconic battle scene'

Avengers Doomsday is filming in Windsor but won't include any scenes filmed in Scotland. Chris Hemsworth has declared his love for Scotland's majestic Highlands, calling the dramatic landscape "perfect" for battle scenes and expressing his hopes to return to the country for future film projects. The 41-year-old star, best known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, told the Sunday Mail that filming in Scotland during Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame left a lasting impression on him. ‌ While production on the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is now underway in Windsor Great Park near Pinewood Studios and Windsor Castle, the actor confirmed that Scotland is not part of the filming schedule this time around, Scottish Daily Express reports ‌ But for Hemsworth, it's a country he's eager to revisit, both on and off screen. 'Filming The Avengers in Scotland was a really cool experience,' he said. 'It doesn't look like we are coming back for Doomsday. But I'd love to not only visit there again but to film and do more work in the country. The people are amazing.' 'There is something majestic about the Highlands, I'd love to do another movie there one day. It's just a place made for an iconic battle scene. The backdrop is just stunning.' Hemsworth rose to global fame after being cast as the Norse god of thunder in 2011's Thor, a role he has reprised in more than nine films over the last decade. 'I love the character, and being cast as Thor has opened up so many opportunities,' he added. ‌ Scotland has already left a notable stamp on the Marvel universe. In Avengers: Endgame, Thor is seen in a low moment of his life, battling depression after failing to stop Thanos in Infinity War. The God of Thunder retreats from the world and relocates to a quiet coastal settlement, the fictional New Asgard. ‌ That fictional home was brought to life in none other than St Abbs, a tiny Scottish fishing village with just over 100 residents. Once known mostly for diving and seafood, the town became a fan-favourite filming location almost overnight when Endgame was released in April 2022. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Eagle-eyed viewers even spotted a bottle of Irn-Bru in Thor's home when Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper, came to visit. The unexpected spotlight sparked a flurry of interest in St Abbs, with online searches for New Asgard soaring in the days after the film's release. While many fans assumed Thor's refuge would be found in Norway, due to his mythological roots, directors Anthony and Joe Russo chose the Scottish coastline instead. Avengers: Endgame went on to become the second highest grossing film of all time, taking in over £2 billion worldwide, and giving a quiet corner of Scotland a starring role in cinematic history.

Superman star earned $1,250,000 less than highest paid member of cast

Everyone knows you shouldn't ask your colleagues what they're getting paid. However, the new Superman, David Corenswet, might want to ask his agent why he earned 1,250,000 less than his co-star Nicholas Hoult. Yes, despite playing the title character and arguably the world's most popular superhero, it turns out that David, 31, didn't earn as much as you might expect for leading a film like Superman. According to a new report from Puck, David and his onscreen love interest Rachel Brosnahan only earned a relatively meagre $750,000 for their work. The former Skins star, however, earned a much more impressive $2,000,000 for playing the vile Lex Luthor, which makes him the highest paid member of the cast. That may sound unfair, but there's method in the madness. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video While David and Rachel are stars in their own right – especially Rachel, who led her own TV show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime Video – both actors lacked the big screen experience. Nicholas, meanwhile,e who's starred in critically acclaimed flicks like Mad Max: Fury Road and Nosferatu alongside bigger franchise fare like X-Men, was able to negotiate a higher wage. Before you start shouting about how unfair this is, though, be aware that all three actors are in line for more money if the film performs at the box office. That means if you think David and Rachel deserve a bit more cash in their pocket, you ned to head to the cinema and see Superman. And why would you go see Superman? The film has been a critical and commercial hit. At the time of writing, Superman has an impressive 82% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even healthier audience score of 93%. Those are some pretty impressive numbers, and it's translating to box office success. The following figures are US only and unadjusted for inflation. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $330,360,194 Man of Steel – $291,045,518 Superman Returns – $200,081,192 Superman – $134,218,018 Superman II -$108,185,706 Superman III -$59,950,623 Superman IV: The Quest For Peace – $15,681,020 The film, which is directed by James Gunn, is on track to become the second-biggest Superman movie ever. More Trending Recent Deadline reports suggest it's earned $123 million in its opening weekend in the US. Once you factor in foreign film markets it's expected that Superman will have brought in $210 million worldwide. Now that may sound like a lot, but with The Wall Street Journal reporting that Superman had a $225 million budget not including marketing costs (which can double the cost of making a movie), the film hasn't quite turned a profit just yet. Still with numbers this good and little in the way of blockbuster competition until the release of Fantastic Four: First Steps it looks like Superman has saved the day… for the accountants at Warner Bros. Pedro Pascal hits back at critics who think he's 'too old' for Fantastic Four

Pedro Pascal has responded to critics who said he was 'too old' to be cast in the new Fantastic Four movie. The 50-year-old actor discussed the subject with AP News at a fan event in London, revealing that the online comments have taken a toll on him. Pedro said that while he typically ignored negative comments relating to his work, being hurt by criticism sometimes 'comes with the territory', adding: 'I think that sometimes the outside will find you, no matter how much you try to protect yourself from it, and it just comes with the territory.' Hitting back: Pedro Pascal has fired back at critics who said he was 'too old' for the new Fantastic Four film (seen on July 10 in London) He went on: 'I think maybe my nerves were bigger than they usually are, and so I think I just was a little bit more sensitive to the love that people have for stories like this, because I know that they wouldn't exist if it weren't for the love that people have for these characters.' Pedro said he felt pressure to 'fulfill expectations' as he portrayed Reed Richards, adding: 'I think that it's very important for me that expectations be fulfilled. 'But I also know that the only way to do that is to give it all my focus and all my heart and my body and my soul, and so that was the best I could do.' Opening up about being 50, Pedro said : 'It is the best time of my life. Just, I don't know, look around. It's an incredible reflection of what I'm experiencing right now. I'm having a really amazing time.' In February, Marvel fans were delighted to see the first-look trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. They took to social media to give their opinions on the latest installment of the superhero franchise, with one person writing on X: 'Okay the Fantastic Four trailer wasn't bad. I'm pleasantly surprised.' Another added: 'I'm not even a Fantastic Four fan, but this looks really sleek. It's nailing the period setting in the same way that First Avenger did.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pedro Pascal he/him (@pascalispunk) Coming soon: The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit theaters on July 25 Someone else weighed in: 'Watched the Fantastic Four trailer and I actually excited for a Marvel movie again.' And another social media user described the Fantastic Four comic series as 'the only ones I've been able to stomach,' adding, 'The trailer looks so great. I need this.' 'I've felt a little burnt out on superheroes but f4 are my ride or die,' one fan revealed. 'I'm so happy the movie looks good.' Others praised the teaser for its 'nostalgic' feel and looking 'very cinematic.' In addition to Pedro, the movie also stars Vanessa Kirby, Julia Garner, Joseph Quinn, and John Malkovich.
