Punjab: Farmers being misguided, mafia opposing land pooling scheme, says CM
Accusing opposition parties of spreading rumours and misguiding farmers regarding the government's proposed land pooling scheme, Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday said the scheme was aimed at putting an end to the mushrooming illegal colonies in the state. He said those who were part of the land mafia were opposing the scheme. 'Opposition parties are involved in construction of illegal colonies. So, they are opposing the scheme,' he said.
Mann clarified that the scheme was 100% voluntary and there would be no forcible land acquisition. He said the scheme was designed to foster transparent and planned urban development across the state. His reaction came after opposition parties accused the government of forcefully acquiring agricultural land merely for development of residential and commercial sites across the state.
Addressing the farmers during an interaction under 'AAP Sarkar, Aapke Duwar' programme, the CM said, 'Punjab has 19,000 illegal colonies in the state – the highest in the country. People put their hard-earned money to buy a house only to be left cheated by these illegal colonisers as they lack approval from the competent authority – Punjab Urban Development Authority.'
'Politicians and bureaucrats, who used to get early information regarding any land acquisition scheme, used to buy land from farmers and then sold the same to the government, making crores in profits. We first told farmers before implementing the scheme. Our intention is not wrong,' the CM said.
He said he would not sign any policy until he gets approval from farmers. He clarified that no notification regarding the scheme has been issued so far.
According to the policy, the landowner would receive a developed residential plot of 1,000 square yards and a commercial area of 200 square yards in exchange for contributing one acre of land.
Meanwhile, reacting to his photo bowing down while shaking hands with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi after a Niti Ayog meeting, said that those accusing him of surrendering before the PM should remember that they had touched feet of the former PMs. 'Prakash Singh Badal had to remain in Delhi for 20 days just to get a cabinet berth for his daughter-in-law Harsmirat Kaur Badal. I met the PM for issues related to Punjab. I have no personal agenda,' he said.
People wearing black clothes were not allowed inside the venue.

Punjab CM Mann says Dhuri ROB work to begin soon; Bittu slams CM for taking ‘fake credit'
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday announced that the work on railway overbridge (RoB) in his constituency Dhuri, Sangrur district, would begin soon. Reacting to this, Union Minister of State for Railways and BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu slammed Mann for 'taking fake credit' as the 'the Railways, which has to grant an approval for the RoB adjoining Dhuri LC 62A railway crossing, will do it soon — without efforts from Mann or the ruling AAP government'. 'The Mann-led AAP government in Punjab has not sanctioned a single rupee for the work,' Bittu said. Asserting that 'necessary clearance' was granted for the work by the Ministry of Railways after 'persistent efforts by the state government', Mann said in a statement: 'The state-of-the-art RoB, which will be constructed at the level crossing (phatak) no. 62A, will play a crucial role in resolving traffic congestion in the Malwa region, particularly for commuters in the Dhuri segment. The total cost of the project is Rs 54.76 crore, which will be funded entirely by the state government.' He also said that 'once initiated, the project will be completed within 18 months. Groundwork began in 2024, but the progress has been delayed due to the pending final railway permission/ NOC since March 2025… The state government pursued the matter diligently, and with required approvals from the Railways, the project work will commence shortly.' Terming Mann's remarks 'misleading', Bittu said: 'In the past three years, Mann has not provided a single rupee to the Railways for cost-sharing overbridge projects across the state. If he had even sent Rs 54.76 lakh, he would have held a press conference. This Rs 54.76-crore claim is pure optics. Can the CM tell in which head this amount is lying, and why it has not been disbursed till today.' Bittu further alleged: 'A few residents met me very recently, and after listening to their grievances, I took up the issue at the highest level immediately. Despite being the MLA from Dhuri, the CM has done nothing to address this long-pending demand… Now that the Railways has taken the initiative, Mann is shamelessly trying to take credit.' Slamming Mann for his alleged neglect towards Dhuri, Bittu said while the previous chief ministers made significant efforts to develop their home constituencies, Mann failed to do so. 'He has not held even a single public interaction in Dhuri after becoming the CM… The bus stand is in poor condition, and the local hospital lacks basic infrastructure too.' 'I had received multiple representations from local BJP leaders and citizen groups, urging immediate action on the overbridge as the 62A railway crossing remains closed for hours, effectively cutting the town into two and causing daily chaos for commuters,' Bittu said, adding residents often have to wait three to four hours to cross the railway tracks.

Attack on Himachal Police: Kharar cop ‘slaps' Amritdhari woman, Warring seeks action against him
A team of Himachal Pradesh Police was attacked in Kharar district while attempting to arrest a Nihang youth involved in a robbery case. A video related to the incident has gone viral on social media, showing a Kharar police officer allegedly slapping an Amritdhari (baptised) woman. Reacting to the incident, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring took to social media and urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take strict action against the police officer involved. According to the information available, the Nihang youth was allegedly involved in a robbery at a toll plaza in Himachal Pradesh, where he reportedly looted ₹55,000 from an employee at sword-point. After reviewing CCTV footage, the Himachal Police identified the suspect and tracked his location to Mohali. The youth was spotted during a protest at the VIP Chowk in Mohali. When the police attempted to arrest him, he managed to escape. However, he was later captured near Nijjar Chowk at Kharar. During the arrest, the Nihang youth and his associates allegedly attacked the Himachal Police team, resulting in injuries to two officers. The local police intervened to de-escalate the situation, after which the Himachal Police took the accused into custody. According to Kharar DSP Karan Sandhu case, a case has been registered against the accused under charges of obstructing government duty and attempted murder. The police also stated that some women accompanying the Nihang youth were actively involved in the assault, and investigations into their roles are currently underway.

"Drug mafias are roaming freely": BJP's Tarun Chugh slams AAP over drug problem in Punjab
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging that drug mafias are operating freely in the state while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preoccupied with the hospitality of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. While speaking to ANI, Tarun Chugh said, 'AAP's governance is primarily for headlines, not for public interest. Drug mafias are roaming freely, and the CM, Bhagwant Mann, is only engaged in the hospitality of Arvind Kejriwal.' He further alleged that the governance failure in Punjab over the last several years has allowed crime and drug-related activities to flourish. 'AAP and Congress have been in power in Punjab for the last 8.5 years... The state has been thrown into the fire of crime and anarchy,' he added. Reiterating the BJP's position on the issue, Chugh added, 'BJP stands strong against drug dealers. No dealer should be spared.' His remarks come amid the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was sent to seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to drugs. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on July 2. Meanwhile, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, asserted that the Punjab government is tackling the drug menace at its root. In a post on X, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Kejriwal wrote, 'Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse. In Punjab, the AAP government is not just talking - we are taking strong action to make the state drug-free. We're fighting the problem at its root to protect our youth and their future. Let's salute every honest officer, volunteer, and citizen who stands with us in this real battle.' Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also emphasised that their war against drugs has now transformed into a mass movement. 'The campaign we launched from Punjab to eradicate drugs, 'War Against Drugs', has now transformed into a mass movement. Those who ruin families and use the ill-got gains of this sin to build palaces and host lavish parties will not be spared,' CM Mann said while speaking to the media. 'We have improved law and order in Punjab and provided people with a safe environment. By taking the strictest action against drug traffickers, we have forced them to flee Punjab,' he said. (ANI)
