14 Indians who went to Russia for jobs ‘missing' claims Congress; paid over ₹31 lakhs to agents
The Congress on Friday claimed that 14 Indians who had travelled to Russia in search of work are now "missing," and urged the government to take up the issue with Moscow and make efforts for their repatriation.
"On December 2023, 126 people went abroad in search of work. They wanted to go to Singapore and Malaysia and Italy, but they were taken to Moscow. My friend Jagdeep ji told me that his brother, who had gone to Russia with 4 others paid ₹ 31,40,000 to agents but they did not get work... these people were recruited in the army by the Russian government there," Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said while addressing a press conference in Delhi on Friday.
Out of the 14 missing people, 9 are from Uttar Pradesh, three from Punjab, one from Maharashtra and one from Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress MP said.

CHANDIGARH: With 19 months left till the 2027 assembly elections, the Punjab Congress leadership is apprehensive that the current AAP-led Punjab government might target party leaders who are facing vigilance inquiries. After Bikram Majithia, Pargat Singh might be next target of the government," he said. Ludhiana MP Warring said, "It would be premature to comment at this moment." On the other hand, Punjab Police has given a clean chit to former Health Minister and AAP MLA Vijay Singla and his OSD Pradeep Kumar in corruption case registered against them in 2022 at Phase 8 Police Station in Mohali. The state police have filed a closure report in a court in Mohali recently, citing that no conclusive evidence was found to proceed against the accused. The court will take up the matter on July 14. While thhe complainant in the case, Rajinder Singh, a government engineer on deputation with Punjab Health System Corporation, has agreed with the closure report. It is worth mentioning here that the complainant had submitted that he was summoned to Punjab Bhawan, and a commission of one per cent was demanded from him. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had dismissed Singla from his cabinet.

Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has alleged that a controversy over the 'imposition' of Hindi language in Maharashtra was being created to divert people's attention from core issues and underlined the need to improve the quality of education. Claiming a drastic cut in the budgetary allocation for education, the former Maharashtra chief minister said the focus should be on providing quality education to students and strengthening infrastructure in the educational sector. "The budgetary allocation on education should be increased. If such a demand arises, either a teacher will be appointed, or the language will be taught online. Opposition parties, however, dubbed the move a default imposition of Hindi as a third language. The controversy has united estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray for the cause of the Marathi language. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS will take out a joint morcha in Mumbai on July 5. Serbia's NIS receives further sanctions reprieve from US
Serbia's largest energy producer was spared sanctions by the United States for another month on Friday, extending an early reprieve for the majority Russian-owned firm. NIS, which operates the country's only oil refinery, said in a statement to AFP that the US government had agreed to delay sanctions - first announced in January as part of Washington's crackdown on the Russian energy sector. "The US Department of the Treasury has issued a new special license postponing the full implementation of sanctions," NIS said. Majority owned by energy giant Gazprom, the company has now managed to negotiate four extensions to avoid a broad package of sanctions originally due to begin in February. The sanctions are now due to come into effect on July 29, NIS said. If implemented, these sanctions would require the complete withdrawal of Russian interests and the sale of their shares -- or nationalisation. Introduced by former US president Joe Biden, the measure was aimed at throttling the flow of profits from the lucrative sector to Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine. Serbia has maintained a close relationship with Russia since the invasion and refuses to impose sanctions, unlike the European Union that it hopes to join. Serbia relies heavily on Russian gas supplies, provided by NIS. The contract between Belgrade and Moscow, signed in spring 2022, was due to expire at the end of May.
