Wrexham chief tells Championship rivals: be afraid if we have shot at promotion in December

The Hollywood fairy tale that is Wrexham AFC is only just beginning, the club's CEO said on Friday as the Welsh side continued its unlikely quest to crack the Premier League.
Since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club in 2020, Wrexham have become the first team to earn three successive promotions from England's national league to the second-tier Championship.
Wrexham will play relegated former Premier League club Southampton in their Championship opener on August 9, a prospect Michael Williamson described as a 'pinch yourself' moment.
Speaking in Wellington during the club's pre-season tour to Australia and New Zealand, the CEO said success was more than simply making up the numbers.
'The expectation is, and Rob McElhenney will say that he doesn't know what this word is, but obviously we need to consolidate our position in the Championship,' Williamson said.
'If we are able to find ourselves halfway through the season, in December, in that 3-4-5-6-7 position, people should be worried about us.

Kai Tak the ‘game changer' that brought Liverpool back to Hong Kong, top club boss says

A senior Liverpool executive said on Friday that Kai Tak Sports Park had been the 'game changer' that brought the English giants back to Hong Kong. Advertisement The Premier League champions, who last visited the city in 2017, will play AC Milan in front of a 50,000 sell-out Kai Tak Stadium crowd on Saturday night, two days after they attracted more than 27,000 to an open training session at the same venue. And Ben Latty, Liverpool's chief commercial officer, said he would not rule out the club returning to Hong Kong in the near future, following a 'very successful' visit. Latty was wowed by the city's flagship new stadium during a fact-finding trip 12 months ago, in particular its air conditioning system. 'The stadium is incredible,' Latty told the Post. 'When I visited last year it was still a building site. It was boiling hot and humid outside, but when I walked into the stadium, I felt cold. Advertisement 'I'm not sure whether they turned the temperature down for my visit, just to make a point. But you could see in the open training that it was easier for the players. The stadium is a game changer.'

Liverpool goalscoring great Rush hails ‘incredible' Isak, pays tribute to Joey Jones

Liverpool's record goalscorer, Ian Rush, has warned his old club that they will begin the new Premier League season with a target on their backs. The reigning champions are in Hong Kong to prepare for their title defence, which kicks off at home to Bournemouth on August 15. They face AC Milan at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday. In 15 seasons, across two spells with Liverpool, Rush won five English championships, including three in a row, starting with the 1981-82 season. 'We were told the easiest thing was to win the league, the hardest thing was to retain it,' Rush told the Post. 'Last year, we thought they would do well to finish in the top four, but Arne Slot has taken them to a different level. Liverpool are now the team to beat.' Ian Rush said Liverpool would have a bigger target on their backs this season.
