125 illegals detained in Sandakan blitz

SANDAKAN: Some 125 undocumented immigrants were detained in a joint operation led by the State Immigration Department in several areas here. The operation from 1am to 7am on Friday involved 54 officers from various Immigration enforcement divisions in Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Ranau and Kota Kinabalu. Sabah Immigration Director Datuk Sh Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said the coordinated effort targeted high-risk areas identified through public tip-offs and intelligence gathering. 'Officers screened a total of 212 individuals at various locations. Of these, 125 were found to be undocumented migrants involved in multiple immigration offences. 'Those detained include 35 adult men, 34 adult women, 27 boys and 29 girls. All were taken to the Sandakan Immigration Depot for documentation and further investigation,' she told a press conference. Among the violations identified were failure to present valid identification documents under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and overstaying beyond the permitted duration under Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act. The operation is part of the department's ongoing efforts to enforce laws under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Atiosom). The department reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on illegal immigrants and maintaining national security. Sh Sitti Saleha also reminded all employers not to hire or shelter undocumented migrants. Police rescue two human trafficking victims in Setapak raid
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have rescued two Indian women believed to be victims of human trafficking and forced labour. Federal Criminal Investigation Department Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Division (D3) principal assistant director, Senior Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, said officers raided a residence in Setapak, Wangsa Maju, about 9pm last night. "The raid was conducted following intelligence gathered. "The operation focused on identifying vulnerable victims of human trafficking, guided by the National Guideline on Human Trafficking Indicators (NGHTI)," he said in a statement today. He said one Indian man was arrested and two human trafficking victims were rescued during the raid. "Our checks revealed the victims, who hailed from India, were deceived and exploited through forced labour at the residence. "Both victims are aged 20 and 22, while the suspect is a 30-year-old man, also from India," he said, adding that the two women were rescued under Section 44(1) of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act. He said the suspect was arrested under Section 13 of the same act. "Further checks revealed the suspect acted as both employer and agent for the victims. "Both victims had been promised employment as tailors with a monthly salary of RM2,000," he said, adding that they did not receive any payment up until the time of their rescue. He said upon refusing to continue working due to non-payment, the suspect allegedly resorted to physical violence against them. "He is alleged to have hit them with a fan. "Both victims suffered injuries to their knees and chin," he said, adding that the victims had been "employed" by the suspect since December last year. Soffian urged the public with information on similar cases to contact the police immediately or go to the nearest police station.

Cops bust illegal gambling hub for migrants
SERDANG: Authorities have uncovered an illegal online gambling hub catering primarily to undocumented migrants, operating out of three units in a four-storey apartment block in Pusat Bandar Putra Permai. The centre was busted during a joint raid by the Immigration Department, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the General Operations Force on Tuesday. Immigration deputy director-general (operations) Jafri Embok Taha said preliminary investigations revealed that the units were registered under the names of three local individuals. 'When officers arrived, the premises were already empty. It's believed the suspects had fled, leaving behind only a few tablets, monitors, chairs and tables. 'We've handed over the case to MBSJ for further investigation and action,' he said during a press conference after the raid. All three units were equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor external movement and catered primarily to undocumented migrants residing in the same apartment block. Jafri said 496 undocumented migrants were sent to the Semenyih Immigration Detention Centre after 741 foreigners were rounded up during the operation, which took place from 10pm to 1am. 'The suspected offences involve the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007,' he told Bernama. He said similar joint operations would continue and reminded the public not to employ, shelter or accommodate foreigners without valid travel documents.
