Pune study finds special lens implants can help patients who can't get LASIK

Pune: A 35-year-old man from US with -3 myopia, who couldn't undergo LASIK due to thin corneas and other conditions, recently underwent an advanced surgical procedure in Pune to fix his eyesight.
Doctors said the patient went through an Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) procedure, which involves surgically placing flexible lenses on the eye to correct vision problems such as myopia. His successful treatment was mentioned in a research paper on the technique by his doctors, who said it can be safely extended to people deemed unfit for LASIK.
"This patient's thin cornea along with low myopia meant LASIK was out of the question," said Dr Vardhaman Kankariya, director of Asian Eye Hospital and Laser Institute and the lead investigator of the research.
"He wanted to completely rid himself of his glasses so we went for what's known as EVO ICL technology, found to be effective in over 300 people with low to moderate myopia," Dr Kankariya said, adding that the lenses were earlier used to treat only high or very high myopia.
"But our study showed the lenses had significant promise in patients with lower myopia as well," he said.
Low myopia or patients with a 'glasses number' of less than -6 are sometimes rejected for LASIK due to thin corneas, keratoconus or severe dry eyes.

Such patients will need a pair of glasses for life. But the study, the doctors said, found that ICL implants helped these people ditch spectacles.
Dr Kankariya said: "We evaluated patients with mild to moderate myopia (up to -6 diopters) and with unsuitable corneas for LASIK. All 361 evaluated patients were successfully treated with ICL implants, offering them spectacle-free vision. Our study has been peer reviewed and earned the 'Best Research Paper Award' at the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) annual conference that was held in Delhi in April.

The ICL procedure involves placing a thin, flexible, biocompatible lens in front of the eye's natural lens. Unlike LASIK, ICL does not require corneal thinning, does not induce dry eyes and is fully reversible, a feature the doctors said made it an ideal alternative for patients with borderline corneal parameters.
Dr Shirin Sonvane, presenting author of the study, said: "The procedure takes 5 minutes, is painless and does not require anesthesia.
This study gives hope to many myopia patients who earlier had no option but to depend on glasses or contact lenses."
Dr Viraj Padwal, a contributor to the study said: "Traditionally, ICL was reserved for patients with high myopia, more than -8D, but this study demonstrated it is effective in lower myopia ranges as well."
Dr Harshul Tak, executive committee member of the Indian Intraocular and Refractive Society said nearly 10% of those applying for LASIK are rejected due to multiple reasons.
"But this study on ICL implants, for LASIK-rejected patients with low myopia, is good research. There have been very few reports of the ICL procedure on such patients in the past. This is the largest study in the world on such patients, making it a valuable reference for ophthalmologists globally," Dr Tak said.

Madurai: In a move to strengthen its animal birth control (ABC) programme, the Madurai Corporation will soon open a third sterilisation centre in the city. An existing corporation health facility near Thangaraj Salai, opposite the corporation swimming pool, will be converted into a small sterilisation unit at an estimated cost of ₹50 lakh. The decision follows a recent stray dog census that counted 38,348 street dogs within city limits. Currently, two ABC centres—at Sellur and Vellaikal—carry out sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) procedures, performing 20–30 surgeries daily as per Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) ABC Rules, 2023. In 2024, around 4,000 dogs were sterilised. With the new centre, the corporation aims to increase this to 5,000 by year-end. "Though the new facility will be small, it will help boost surgery numbers and ease the load on existing centres," a senior health official said. Tenders will be floated soon, and veterinary support from the animal husbandry department is also being considered. The civic body pays ₹1,650 per dog to a private agency for ABC operations—₹1,450 for the surgery and ₹200 for dog-catching, in line with AWBI guidelines. Now a study published in the journal Science Advances has explored how heat affects biological aging, leading to gradual deterioration of cells and tissues and increasing the risk of age-related diseases. They measured the participant's biological age using epigenetic clocks that capture DNA modification patterns that change with increasing age. In order to analyse the effects of long periods of extreme heat on people, the researchers linked the epigenetic clock data with climate records to assess whether people residing in hot environments showed faster biological aging. Here, the results stated that older adults residing in areas with frequent hot days presented significantly faster epigenetic aging compared to those who lived in cooler areas. This link between biological age and extreme heat remained constant after analysing various individual and community factors such as physical activity levels and socioeconomic status. Participants living in locations with at least 140 extreme heat days annually (classified as heat days exceeding the index of 90 degrees Fahrenheit), experienced up to 14 months of additional aging compared to those who lived in areas with fewer than 10 such days annually. Ahmedabad: Four of the 241 victims aboard the ill-fated AI 171 flight were a man, his wife, son and daughter. The forensic experts first relied on the man's paternal uncle to get a sample for the Y-STR (short tandem repeat) test. The relationship, however, did not prove helpful in establishing an identity beyond doubt. So, the experts again reached out to the family to request a sample of the deceased man's mother and performed the X-STR test. "The strategy worked. Through careful kinship analysis using advanced DNA profiling, the team successfully established the man's identity, which proved to be key in identifying three other members of the family," said H P Sanghvi, director of the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS). The identity of the last unidentified passenger aboard AI 171 was also confirmed on Friday. A team of 40 forensic scientists from the DFS and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) worked tirelessly to establish the identities of 254 of 260 crash victims based on DNA matches, a mammoth task that posed unique challenges. Autosomal (non-sex chromosome) markers were used to narrow down the connection between the victims and the donor. To verify that all four were related to each other, X-STRs were used. With the use of both X-STR and autosomal STR, we could establish the identities," said Prof Shukla. Dr Bhargav Patel, head of the CoE in DNA Forensics at NFSU, said that they have matched the DNA samples of the victims with nephews, cousins, grandparents and maternal or paternal uncles. "In conventional matches, we generally rely on either X-STR, Y-STR or autosomal STR test to establish identities. But in the cases associated with the crash, more than one test was employed in several cases. In some of the cases, even mitochondrial DNA matches were used. While nuclear DNA (with X and Y chromosomes) is inherited from both parents, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited maternally," he said. The X-STR markers are inherited from mother to daughter and son, and from father to daughter, but not from father to son. Likewise, mtDNA is inherited maternally and can be matched with the maternal line. In one of the better-known cases from the airplane crash, the identification of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was carried out using the Y-STR from his nephew on the patrilineal branch. Earlier, his sister and son had provided the samples for the match. Experts said that ensure the quality of DNA samples, they relied primarily on teeth. Their second choice was bones such as the mandible (jaw) and clavicle (collarbone) that sustained severe temperatures. Several of the samples were in highly deteriorated condition, the team managed to match all samples, according to the experts.
